Kenny Clark missing the point on human bias

253

Former referee, Kenny Clark, spoke to the BBC on the subject of bias in referees last night: “For anyone to suggest that a referee would work for 10 or 15 years to get to the top level of refereeing in Scotland and would then cheat the fans simply in order to give ‘his team’ an advantage is just nonsensical.”

Putting aside for one moment all recent issues in our game, everyone is prone to bias, conscious or otherwise.  It is part of the human condition. If referees insist they are immune, they are contributing to the problem.  Instead, they should be aware of the potential.  Former referees should encourage them to be vigilant.

Clark explains how much work goes into getting to the top in refereeing and that it would ridiculous to jeopardise a career to help your football team, but he is missing the point.  No wonder refereeing is in such a mess if they go around telling each other they are not affected by the human condition.  They are human, they make mistakes and are as subject to bias as any other group of professionals.

Clark was happy to cite the new SFA procedures as being sourced from English football, but omitted the add that English football addresses this very question of unintended bias by asking referees which team they support.

You must have had some laugh that day.

It had escaped my mind until I saw a post on Facebook. It beggars belief why ref Cuthill could have red carded Johnnie. Think that was the name of the ref, though maybe I omitted an ‘n’!

  2. I thought it was pretty obvious that almost all refs names (or descriptors) began with C…….

I was there that day too, as a young teenager.

We went on the football special ( remember them ) sunny when we left Glasgow, soaked walking from Ayr Station to Somerset. Arrived at the ground and therain went off. It’s,amazing the daft things you remember.

Johnny Doyle ridiculously sent off, Celtic lost, travelling back on the train not a pleasant experience. I’ve definitely had better days watching Celtic.

    Hail Hail

  6. Refs?

None of them support Celtic tho the odd one or two may not support rainjurz.

It’s anyone but Celtic for the SFA. Our success is an affront to their ago-old, undeserved sense of superiority.

We are the enemy and are treated with contempt.

    Fix fitba’ empty Hampden.

I might have been the young teenager that sold you a program.

Prime spot was always on the road from train station or bus park to the ground. I remember some guys buying 4 or 5 at a time, for mates or family that couldn’t make the game. HH

  9. FA Cup live on BBC1 with it currently going into extra-time.

Theresa May statement due at 10pm.

    Hmm.

  10. BB1,

you are absolutely correct…there’s been a continuous stream of squirrels put out there to distract and split all supporters…this is only about clearing out a particular culture at the FTSFA

If it suited Parliament to lessen the religious tensions in Scotland….then it obvs doesn’t

  11. Not seen the Gillette advert because I don’t watch much television, however Paul Joseph Watson has skillfully deconstructed the narrative once again.

It’s a strange world. You may well have done, I would always buy a programme at that time.

I had a big collection at one time, someone misplaced/ destroyed them, but hey that’s life.

Without googling the only other things, I remember from that day are Ayr played in red and Celtic were 1 up early.

I can’t remember who scored, though.

    Hail Hail

  13. It’s a bit ironic that the vast sums of TV money poured into the English leagues has effectively destroyed what was one of the great football competitions in the world, the FA Cup. Now considered by many EPL clubs to be an inconvenience rather than the prestige tournament that it once was. Money has changed football completely and not for the better.

  15. Thanks for the clarification on Squinty.I take it no funds were lodged.Sure it would have been splattered all over the Record.

Lampard got himself a great loan from Chelski with the CH,Tomori.Very good all round.

That was my inferred earlier point…you can never be sure how a good player will cope under the intense pressure of playing for a big team

  17. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Apart from scoring with a well placed header, what has been missing from Waghorn pen tonight is the thuggishness that marked his infamous Ibrox career.

His manager knows that English refs are not as understanding of a man’s game.

  18. POG 9.43…

Spot on, too much TV money is killing the game.

The quicker Sky, Bt and other tv companys stop bankrolling the chosen few clubs the better.

    Hope you’re well.???
