Kenny Clark missing the point on human bias

253

Former referee, Kenny Clark, spoke to the BBC on the subject of bias in referees last night: “For anyone to suggest that a referee would work for 10 or 15 years to get to the top level of refereeing in Scotland and would then cheat the fans simply in order to give ‘his team’ an advantage is just nonsensical.”

Putting aside for one moment all recent issues in our game, everyone is prone to bias, conscious or otherwise.  It is part of the human condition. If referees insist they are immune, they are contributing to the problem.  Instead, they should be aware of the potential.  Former referees should encourage them to be vigilant.

Clark explains how much work goes into getting to the top in refereeing and that it would ridiculous to jeopardise a career to help your football team, but he is missing the point.  No wonder refereeing is in such a mess if they go around telling each other they are not affected by the human condition.  They are human, they make mistakes and are as subject to bias as any other group of professionals.

Clark was happy to cite the new SFA procedures as being sourced from English football, but omitted the add that English football addresses this very question of unintended bias by asking referees which team they support.

  1. mullet and co 2 on

I read Tam McManus last night on twitter defending referees. His defence included that the footage of after dinner admissions of helping Rangers were just playing to the crowd.

There is a very Scottish mentality that has been sponsored by our media at play here. We are Scottis, bias wouldn’t happen here! Even if you put Billy blue nose from the lodge in charge of a Celtic game and he gave up his season ticket to Ibrox for the day there wouldn’t be the slightest chance of bias? He meets up with his pals after the game in a Rangers pub?

No chance of even the slightest bias?

We have had over a decade of sponsored overt bias from the games administrators. They employed and put the main administrators of Rangers Tax rouse inncharge if player registrations. Nothing was done. Nothing.

The head of refereees was sacked over a sectarian cartoon and his son maintains a senior refereeing position. He holds no grudge no bias and doesn’t try to influence his refereeing colleagues?

How many referees have been Celtic supporters and how many Rangers? How many have been small team supporters who carried a grudge against Celtic for their perceived bias – McGeady choosing Ireland for instance?

There is a mountain of evidence of bias and an oceans worth below that of circumstantial evidence.

No bias just cos we are Scottish is aloof, maybe even racist, none sense. No other country operates this way.

  2. Remember when Robbie Keane was being constantly and incorrectly called offside?

They said it was simply because Keane was too quick for their linesmen to keep up with, so they just kept flagging him offside just to be sure.

Had to be one of the worst excuses of all time.

That’s the level of dishonesty we faced back then, and we are still having to accept it to this day.

    Cheating, corrupt, ne’er-do-well scum.

  3. Totally agree Mullet

I was at a Sporting Dinner a few years ago in Midlothian and Jonathan Rowbotham openly admitted adding 6 minutes injury time that was not justified in 2005 SCF (we beat Dundee United 1-0)

They are brazen about their cheating and why not? – they’ve been getting away with it for decades.

  4. 16 ROADS.

And in Suttons first season up here he was labelled “the dirtiest player in Scotland!?!.

    Why??

Because every time he got to the ball and held it up its was given as a foul for backing in to the defender.

This didn’t happen when he was in England. Hartson also got the same treatment penalised for just being a bigger and more physical player……..and of course -the real reason -wearing the Hoops!

Meanwhile another similar type big striker ,a certain Mark Hately was given a free-hand in Scotland to use his physical assets to the full.

  5. kevin o’donnell told an interesting story in the record many years ago.

in his first game as an official at celtic park he was the junior linesman. he stated that the senior linesman and the referee hated celtic so much they refused to use the green towels provided in the changing room.

    they brought their own towels.

this is what we are up against.

did old rangers win anything without cheating?

  6. We call for a review of refereeing and the review system, supposedly wanting to see Fleming and Maxwell, Videocelts says BR will meet Maxwell tonight at Perth however in the company of the Sevco manager and another, I think we can file this under pointless.

  7. 50 shades of green on

How many games in a row did big Paul Elliott ger booked when he joined us?????, it became laughable, we ended up changing our sweep to what min the big mhan would get booked in.

  8. AN TEARMANN,

Thanks big D, I’m good just waiting to have my wings clipped when Mrs PMTYH comes home. Well not really, she’s really never put her foot down when it comes to my gallivanting with the Bhoys or beer festivals but I know my place – Horses, dogs, cats, budgies, hamsters, ME ?

  9. Big Shuggie from yesterday

I knew Bob Cuthill – Big Hibs supporter.

Took some stick for that decision locally.

My devilish nature tried to get him into our village hall as he passed by when we were celebrating our annual player of the year dance as we honoured our own Johnny Doyle.

Johnny sadly passed and as we were not quite setting the heather on fire at that time in football terms, we asked the crowd on the bus for suggestions for player of the year…… JOHNNY DOYLE’S WIFE was the reply. She accepted attended and had a great time…. sorry for digressing, Cuthill – never a Hun but a game attending Hibs man.

    HH

  10. I take the summit from yesterday, a la Jim White, is still ongoing ?

    Spend the feckin money Celtic…..

RB, CH and out with the deadwood please.

I was at an early Sutton home game, possibly first against Motherwell? Two fouls against him and booked for each one and sent off. At the time we thought the ref was just trying to impress his fellow ludge members. Looking back I now think it was something more sinister

  12. BIG WAVY

Not easy getting rid of deadwood!

According to Celtic website we’ve got 16 first team midfielders!

    SIXTEEN FFS!

The whole recruitment strategy at Celtic Park is amateurish at best and bloody stupid at worst! (is that a word?)

Not just Lawwells baws needing a good kicking if you ask me.

  13. Philbhoy – Agreed. Our hit rate in the transfer space has been mediocre to say the least. Appreciate you can’t always get it right but come on – Benyu, Compper, Allan, Hendry, Hayes et al…

  14. BIG WAVY

Other problem is no one wants to buy the dross!

No wonder the club are tight on their purse strings.

£55,000,000 won’t cover wages this season!

    :-(

    ——————————————————————————————————————————————–

I remember that game. We won 1-0 and Petrov scored. The look on Sutton’s face when he got sent off was…..well “priceless” It was clearly a “Welcome to Scottsh Fitba’ ya fenian bassa” message, one he never forgot when he did his famous ” we knew Dunfermline would lie down” post-match interview at Kilmarnock.

  16. Guys,

After dinner speeches have got to be controversial, they have to stimulate the crowd and get them laughing, tutting and discussing.

Or else they will be boring.

Don’t encourage them by your presence .

    HH.

  17. From Hampden or The Boys in Blue……..

Any sign of the substance behind the alleged allegations allegedly????

  18. Boring now ,this constant reference to the cheating scum ,known as Referees in Scotland. What good does it do to go on and on about it on here.

    BIG WAVY,

Everything must be so easy in the world you inhabit.Just do this,do that, whats the problem? You inhabit a world Alien to the rest of us.

“Where problems melt like lemon drops, away above thel chimney tops,

    thats where you’ll find me”.

    Mc Tominey,hopefully a rumour.Not needed I would think.A fit Mc Carthy,a better shout.

Anyway,I will leave it in the hands of our wonderful recruitment team.

    Wull ye,Aye.

  19. Greenpinata

    Controversial lie or controversial truth?

Tis the very fact he can joke, imply, infer, nod, wink and smile and by their laughter the crowd understand his telling of the tale.pure racism in action.

It’s the tea and slippers comfy after a big dinner knowledge he can slander our club, talk utter shite on public radio doing it.and get away with it.

    Hh

  20. I think mctominey would be a good move.

    McCarthy has not played much.
