Kenny delivers at crucial period for Celtic

144

Since injury elevated his status to starting striker three weeks ago, Johnny Kenny has made five appearances, scoring four goals in the process. This included the important opening goals against Falkirk, Newco and Kilmarnock. At a critical period in our season, he is the player who stepped up and delivered and was today called into the Ireland international squad for their games against Portugal and Hungary.

Johnny is a 22-year-old talent with a poachers’ presence in the box, heading ability and who is physical enough to hold off defenders. At this stage of a player’s career, this is all you get. Under the right manager, Celtic can develop into a valuable asset.

The wounds from Thursday are still raw, but surely the lessons of that game, and those against Kairat (which Kenny was deemed insufficient for), is that players with exactly his profile can be developed into very effective footballers. Regrets about what could have been, had he been used in August, are pointless. But the next man in the Adidas zipper must have a track record of transforming players like Johnny into top talents.

  2. Good afternoon.

Scrolling through last night’s posts on the previous blog on my mobile phone, I found myself lost in screen after screen of posts from Clunks with just the word Etc repeated 100s or maybe 1000s of times. It got to the point I thought I had somehow downloaded a virus. (see last night around 10.30pm).

I understand this is aimed at KevJ but at least you can scroll by his posts without wondering where the end of it is.

  3. Well just for those who think world foitball centres on the west of Scotland.

Johnmy Kenny was in the last ROINT Camp…

Saw a very good interview with him saying how proud he was.

He happens to be Irish and played for Irish team Shamrock Rovers – he did well in the league of Ireland and Europa.

Howevee, if, llike me, you saw him play against Chelsea this time last year you could see the bhoy had a way to go…

The new converts to the Kenny cause are very welcome though;)

Great game yesterday, the team showed great spirit…

Knowing the city not so important these days then?

    Indeed . It’s a manager we need , not a taxi driver or a tour guide .

  5. The Battered Bunnet on

I was concerned at the chance we gave away in the first half – their keeper launched a free kick from 10 yards outside his own box, long and high and over our central defenders and the striker ran through to hit his shot off the bar.

At first glance Scales is shown up in a poor light, allowing the striker to run off him and into the space behind Trusty.

On closer examination, the striker was offside by a step. Celtic’s defence held a good line.

Had he scored it would have been VARed and ruled out, but because he missed the chance the offside wasn’t discussed.

  6. Kenny needs a few things.Hold the ball up better.2 or 3 passes up to him, bounced 3 yards backwards.A wee bit more calmness.Martin was right, show him the Larsson video.

Both goals in the Hearts game, came from well worked corners. The United one a dead ringer for Mulgrews against the Huns at Celtic Park a few years back.I never see any plan, corners or FKs.I said earlier,KT has a fair throw on him, never gets used.

A good manager would have recalled Johnny Kenny from Rovers last January when we sold Kyogo Then he would have rewarded him for his hard work in pre season, and given him a three year deal.

    Oh wait CSC

    TBB

I thought that too . His starting position seemed to be beyond scales . IMO our defence has been playing the offside line very effectively lately , including young Pusey who kept the line faultlessly yesterday .

Thursday was a bit of a defensive disaster but for quite different reasons .

  9. Why did Assgard play for the huns yesterday, violent conduct is an automatic 2 match ban,no matter what competition you are playing in,embdae?

  10. Sometimes the masochist, I re-watched the Midgieland game tonite:

We were not completely out of it, but never wholly in it against a side of strapping big lads.

The lack of composure and coughing up possession were our worst flaws. Too many no shows inc an entire midfield and the two full backs were error ridden.

More positively, Osmand has a nippy Ole Gunnar Solksjaer quality about him and, to my eyes, is a better striking prospect than Kenny (who like others was very lost in Denmark).

My rule knowledge is rusty but I felt the Erlic lad who conceded the Osmand penalty was the last man and fouled Callum to prevent him scoring; why wasnt that a sending off offence ?

Nearly midnight here – nytol !

  11. The Battered Bunnet on

Bada – the ball pitches on the 18 yard line, that’s defenders’ territory, not sure the keeper should have been anywhere near it.

  12. Hoop hoop Hooray on

Great leader P67 if Kilmarnock is our benchmark.

Johnny Kenny and Dane Murray are 22. If you are still being developed at thst age in the midern game in the hope that one day be a CL player it is likely too late.

Our league is falling below tbe likes of cyprus and azerbaijan in quality and standing. As long as we use other teams in our league to benchmark against we will never again compete in europe.

We won 4-0 yesterday but the quality on both sides was dreadful, How far we have fallen.

Celtic Football Club is pleased today to release the results of its most wide-ranging supporter survey ever conducted.

The survey, which has been undertaken by almost 50,000 supporters worldwide and carried out with the support of the University of Strathclyde Business School, has delivered a range of important information and insights which the Club will use to inform its operations as it moves forward.

Not to worry – I’m sure our world-class football department will be well clued-up about what type of manager we need.

In the bad old days clubs would make appointments on the whims of one all-powerful man with an ego inversely proportional to his football knowledge, though of course those antiquated practices are long gone. Thankfully!

  15. As the survey data has been processed and we have been working with the University and Goodform teams to present to our fans, we have also been progressing work in a number of areas in line with the feedback received, including:

With a significant number of fans surveyed saying they would be interested in moving to use ‘safe-standing’ at matches, the club has already begun work on reviewing feasibility, options available, and establishing a consultation process and working group on this matter, with further news to follow.

We have seen a clear desire from supporters for improved fan engagement and the Club has commenced a review and development of our supporter engagement processes.

On digital development and fans’ views on improving digital accessibility, the creation of Celtic’s club app is already well underway, with huge benefits set to be delivered following its launch soon. In addition, we will be launching a brand new Celtic TV channel at the start of next season, and work is ongoing to review options for a Club membership scheme.

We have noted that stadium catering has been highlighted as an area of improvement for a number of supporters and we have engaged with our providers in order to review the services available and we will be carrying out further work with supporters to seek to achieve improvements in this important area.

And with nearly 60% of supporters saying they would use public transport to travel to matches if it was improved, Celtic is seeking to engage in discussions with Glasgow City Council and other stakeholders to try and drive issues of accessibility and transport infrastructure forward for the benefit of all our fans.

Johnny Kenny “Under the right manager, Celtic can develop into a valuable asset.”

Pre 1990s…players were developed for OUR first team..to play for US…in the league, cups and European games….

Now however they’re developed for sell on value …for another team to enjoy….

Back in the day, players who were developed by us would remain with us until their pace, skill waned…mainly due to age..

Celtic are definitely not alone when it comes to developing players for resale value….only the cash rich clubs of the EPL can hold on to players whose value soars….hence the 6 English teams participating in the “Champions” League…

Can you imagine the teams, trophies and European success Celtic could have built up if we were able to hold on to our players without having to sell over the last 40 years?..

It’s all about developing for sell on value now and not for success…it’s a shame..

  18. Jonny Kenny brings a lot of attributes to the team, good presence, scores a variety of goals, has good mobility and has a bit of nous about him (Henrik had a lot of that about him) and will keep improving. No need to wait on another coach to make that happen. Pity we lost the even younger Callum, who shares some of the same skills, hope we get him back if Daezan moves on in January. Good luck with ROI, Portugal and Hungary are no mugs. Tough ask. Actually Scotland’s task is not much easier.

  19. Bodo/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen has suggested “nothing is certain” over his future as he nears the end of his contract with his side having one game left to retain the Norwegian title and, when asked about being linked with the Celtic job, says he would only leave for “something that is more exciting than Glimt”. (TV2), external

Martin O’Neill says he was not at St Mirren’s match against Hibernian on Saturday, Celtic’s next two opponents, in expectation of being interim manager for those games but because of due diligence in case the search for a permanent team boss drags on. (The Scotsman), external

Interim boss Martin O’Neill does not know if he would continue as Celtic manager after the international break if asked but expects to be informed by Sunday what the board has decided about the role long term. (Daily Record), external

According to reports in his homeland, Celtic have made an enquiry about signing Morocco Under-20s captain Houssam Essadak and have asked UTS Rabat to name a price for the 20-year-old defensive midfielder who pulled out of a £400,000 transfer to Las Palmas this summer and was also linked with Sunderland. (Glasgow Times)

If we were ever going to do it I think now would be a good time for Celtic to highlight the bias and impartiality of BBC Scotland, particularly its sports department.

  21. Bada,

You are right about Asgard. The Cup is the SPFL Cup and follows those rules. Two match ban.

Anyone know why this was not the case.I did not think about it.

  22. On Catering do away with the cheap catering, I know these companies are dear but there food is a 100 per cent better than whats being dished out at present, McDonalds ,Burgher King ,KFC,Domino’s, etc, also I saked on the previous blog is there a bias on BBC SPORT Scotland against our club?

  23. Said it before, no point at all changing the manager until we get rid of Nicholson and Diddydale.

If that happens, then no progress will be forthcoming, imo

Red Card = 2 match ban, same comp.

Red Card for Violent Conduct = 3 match ban, all comps?

A friendly ref might have classed it as a ‘soft’ Red as I think happened with Elbows McCulloch once upon a time which just happened to save him missing a crucial match. If memory serves me that was an even more blatant case of VC than this one.

  26. No matter what,he was not eligible to play yesterday, unless the Red was overturned which it was not,and no appeal. He automatically misses next game then gets notice of any further games.Has to be questioned.

  27. Celtic Mac

Thanks, but it really didn’t do or say anything that both the support and board already didn’t know, in saying that the board won’t be subjected to the crap the support have to put up with, so in that respect it will have been informative, or not as the case may be.

  28. Johnny Kenny is not good enough to be Celtic’s lead striker. I’d be wary of the motives of anyone pushing us to go down the road of playing him. For me, that represents a path of regression and downsizing.

Play players like Kenny every week and you can expect dropped points and lost leagues.

Of course he’s scored lately and done well but there’s a ceiling here.

We’ve a £80 million in the bank, develop a better player into a world class player and win everything in the process.
