Kenny delivers at crucial period for Celtic

144

Since injury elevated his status to starting striker three weeks ago, Johnny Kenny has made five appearances, scoring four goals in the process. This included the important opening goals against Falkirk, Newco and Kilmarnock. At a critical period in our season, he is the player who stepped up and delivered and was today called into the Ireland international squad for their games against Portugal and Hungary.

Johnny is a 22-year-old talent with a poachers’ presence in the box, heading ability and who is physical enough to hold off defenders. At this stage of a player’s career, this is all you get. Under the right manager, Celtic can develop into a valuable asset.

The wounds from Thursday are still raw, but surely the lessons of that game, and those against Kairat (which Kenny was deemed insufficient for), is that players with exactly his profile can be developed into very effective footballers. Regrets about what could have been, had he been used in August, are pointless. But the next man in the Adidas zipper must have a track record of transforming players like Johnny into top talents.

Once a player hits 26 his options shrink. A mediocre team in one of the lesser big 5 leagues is probably as good as it gets.

  2. What puzzles me and what reasons we are holding cash, Brian Quinn when Chair, said every penny raised will be spent on the club. Peter Lawwell said he same when CEO, What has changed witth Celtic Policy?

Do we really only care that when Kenny scores 4 in 5 as it increases his sale value and not what his goals achieve for the club? Should we celebrate young Callums goal because it helped getting to the Cup Final or because it increased his resale value

Martin O’Neill went to see St Mirren play because he is Celtic Caretaker Manager, Thats what Managers do, the whole job until he is replaced. Training, Tactics and selection are all parts of his job. He will look at players and teams because he maybe will be required to do so, He also confirmed at his Presser that when a new manager is appointed then he will have a handover and a debrief.

We are lucky to have him

Don’t know. I never read his posts. Haven’t for a couple of years with his conspiracy theories, constant bashing of Celtic supporters and disparaging of our intelligence levels and multi-monikers.

Was agreeing the point that we can develop young players and they can become Celtic stalwarts or maybe even legends.

Ie….not every project/player has to be sold.

  6. Put me down as a big Jonny Kenny fan. All this ‘development’ jibber jabber. What happened to what we used to say, “he’s only going to get better”, “he gets himself into great positions”. Jonny was very unlucky not to get another yesterday when his shot ricocheted off the inside of the post and Killie got away with one. He’s a great player as far as I’m concerned and we’ll be singing his praises as the weeks go by.

Re Kieran. Delighted he scored yesterday he’s being weighing in with assists recently too and I think he is forming a very good partnership with young Tounekti down the left. For some reason it doesn’t seem to work as well when it’s him and Daizen on the left.

    Have we appointed Knutsen yet?

  7. Nancy’s odds have tumbled and the bookies seem to have him as a very clear favourite. Maybe due to the fact he’s now available.

His coaching is highly rated but not sure if it’s transferable to Europe. But then we said that about Ange.

    Asking for a friend

  13. kenny needs to do better with his hold up play and ball retention. On the positive note he has good physicality, good pace, good movement and works hard to get into dangerous areas. He appears to know the way to goal. He just turned 22, of course he can continue to develop and improve if he wants it enough.

Using his countryman as an example, although I am not scales biggest supporters, there is no doubt he made significant improvement as a player between the age of 22 and 26 years old cause he wanted it.

One of the main things our club is missing is the development of players good enough for our first team squad. As soon as we get players pushing its criticism. Now Kenny may go on to be great, good or not good enough. He may be ome a regular, a bit part and fringe player or be sold etc, but he’s given himself a fighting chance. Good luck kid, your success is our success when your in the hoops.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2025-26*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #20 CELTIC 4 KILMARNOCK 0 (KENNY, TIERNEY, MAEDA, ENGELS)*

    Good evening, friends.

The teams emerged from the tunnel and we witnessed the crazy situation caused by Daizen’s babysitter letting him down at the last minute. Out he came, with 3 weans in tow before finally spotting a helpful lady on the touchline who kindly agreed to look after the kids whilst daddy was at work.

We started our match 9 points behind Hearts but with 1½ games in hand but the way we came flying out of the traps indicated that we would handle the pressure. And, for once we created 2 good chances in the opening 10 minutes. McCowan found Kenny in the box and Jonny’s effort came back off the post. He would do better just 3 minutes later. Tounekti’s pass through to Hatate just evaded our Japanese midfielder but came off the Killie defender. Reo managed to keep it in play and his cut back found Kenny for a decent poacher’s goal and his 4th of the Shaun and Martin era. Jonny tends not to do that much else in games but his current goalscoring record is more than decent.

Knowing that a 2nd goal would settle nerves around the stadium, Celtic huffed and puffed a little through the remainder of the first half, also having to get over yet another hamstring injury, this time to the always impressive Saracchi. The woodwork came to the rescue again but this time it was Celtic who benefited. A simple ball over the top saw 2 Kilmarnock strikers bearing down on goal. Kasper stayed on his line and tried to remain as big as possible but the effort smashed off the bar and away to safety.

Celtic were much more clinical in the second half. Just 6 minutes after the break, Tierney found himself in space just outside the left corner of the box. And just as he did at Hampden a week earlier, Kieren adopted the ole ‘if you don’t shoot you won’t score’ approach and drilled a fine low shot across the keeper and into the net.

A series of substitutions peppered the remaining half hour (although, strangely Donovan, Bernardo and Forrest were not even on the bench). And it was one of those substitutes who gave me one of my highlights of a troubled season. At half time the big screens had shown The Maestro speaking about the Foundation’s Christmas Appeal. And we all know how good Paul was with many a killer pass. Well, in the 85th minute, Arne Engels ran over to collect a pass out of defence and in one graceful moment curled an exquisite McStayesque curling pass round the Killie left back and into the path of the onrushing Maeda. Daizen’s first time effort bulged the net and I leapt from my seat in delight. So delighted that I immediately typed Arne’s name into my draft email that I sent to myself a few minutes later!

And we still had one more moment to smile about. Yang initially tussled for the ball on the left and then bore down the left hand side into the box. A lazy tug on his arm resulted in a stonewall penalty, our 2nd in 2 games. And although Hatate was still on the park, this time it was super sub Engels who took the kick. A perfect penalty, struck low and hard into the corner and it was 4-0 Celtic. Referee Robertson couldn’t even be bothered to restart the game and blew for time up whilst our players were still congratulating Arne. Another made up Law from Scottish officials!

So, the 4 game series with Shaun and Martin at the helm turned out not too bad. 2 wins, a 3rd win after extra time and an defeat in Europe. 12 goals to cheer and 4 conceded. Maybe that old cliche sums it up – has the ship been steadied?

We have now played 20 games, and have won 10, drawn 6 and lost 4. We have scored 35 goals and conceded 17.

As for the voting numbers, an evening surge proved to be enough to smash us through the 100 barrier yet again. My huge, sincere thanks to everyone who cast their votes – 106 in total. And no spoiled ballot papers this week. That figure generates a further £4.20 for our adopted charity, CHAS. And the 20 games this season has now generated donations totalling £38.60.

The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Schmeichel: 1

    Simpson-Pusey: 9

    Trusty: 95

    Scales: 34

    Saracchi: 1

    McGregor*: 42

    Engels*: 14

    Yang: 0

Unused substitutes: Balikwisha, Murray, Sinisalo, Yamada

And so, the POINTS earned by each player for this match are as shown below. But, as some have asked for this again, a brief explanation of the POINTS system. Man Of The Match gets 25, runner up gets 22, 3rd place to 5th place get 19, 16 and 14. The remaining players who took to the field earn 12, 11, 10, etc down to a minimum of 2. Unused subs get 1 point. Simples!

So, for the Kilmarnock game the points are awarded as follows –

    25 points: Trusty

    22 points: McGregor

    19 points: Hatate

    16 points: Scales

3 points: Nygren, Ralston and Yang

1 point: Balikwisha, Murray, Sinisalo, Yamada

    3: Doohan

0: All the other players who’ve not yet made a matchday squad!

For once I actually think that the International Break has come at a decent time. 12 more sleeps until either the new manager has his first game, or the Martin and Shaun show continues. It’s a full card of league fixtures that we return to. Celtic travel to St Mirren for a Saturday Night TV game, kicking off at 8.00pm. Hearts are also on TV but play the following day, away to Aberdeen.

  20. pretty sure that all 3 of them would be better than their right back in the semi – worst player i have ever seen in the flesh !

  23. Good Morning Celts – Grand Day To Be A Tim.

    BSR @ 12:35 pm,

“A good manager would have recalled Johnny Kenny from Rovers last January when we sold Kyogo Then he would have rewarded him for his hard work in pre season, and given him a three year deal.

    Oh wait CSC”

    Exactly…

Johnny Kenny, on the development pathway, like Liam Scales before him was spotted by a Manager with an eye for a player.

They both had gone out on loan to get game time, experience and grow as professional footballers.

Ajer did it, Calmac did it, even King Kenny did it…

Scales came back and the Board wanted to sell him cheaply to Aberdeen – BR&Co seen the potential centre half and wanted to develop the player.

Kenny came back at the behest of the Manager and the Board wanted to sell him cheaply to Bolton Wanderers – BR&Co seen the potential centre forward and wanted to develop the player.

    It’s what we do…

The concern is their obsession with BR&Co.

They got what they wanted didn’t they?

The underperforming, underacheiving, underwhelming Manager emptied.

And we enter a brave new world.

The Board will appoint a new man.

Someone who will do better at player development

Someone who will do better in Europe

Someone who will win more trophies

Someone who will make more profit on player sales.

Someone who will bring in record revenues

Someone we will make record profits under

They don’t need to trash our last Manager

The new guys record will speak for itself;)

    Hail Hail

  24. I wasn’t comparing Kenny to anyone.

My point was he’s young and a lot of strikers don’t peak until 26ish.

Maybe could have worded it better but patter like crack pipe and deluded?

    Crikey

  25. Morning all. Like many on here I believe our problems are much deeper rooted and won’t be solved merely by a manager change. Also DD pulled the plug on Brendan without a plan in place. Shock horror! Celtic lacking a strategic plan I don’t believe it. My main concern is that we bring in a yes man to do Dermotts bidding and tell him to work with the current structure.

I have no insider knowledge but based upon the apparent lack of activity I’m expecting Martin to be here for the rest of this year at least as we limp through the season, limp being an important description.

If anyone at CQN can tell me who is in charge of the process to identify the new manager and what qualifications they have that makes them suitable I’d appreciate it.

After all we need to have accountability, right?

  26. Laxalt @ 6:58 am,

Chris Sutton was an excellent centre half and excellent centre forward as a youngster.

He was part of Blackburn Rovers famous S-A-S forward line.

    Sutton And Shearer.

Under Kenny Dalglish – who signed both players – they won the English Double.
