KENNY FOR CELTIC

CELTIC are poised to sign Everton right-back Jonjoe Kenny on loan until end of season.

Neil Lennon is hoping to snap up the defender as a direct replacement for Jeremie Frimpong and put him straight into the squad for tomorrow night’s Premiership game against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

Kenny has made only first-team appearances for the Goodison outfit this season after spending last term at Bundesliga club Schalke where he played 34 times.

The 23-year-old attacking wide player has dropped down the pecking order at Carlo Ancelotti’s team and is behind Seamus Coleman, who was once rejected by Gordon Strachan at the Hoops, and Mason Holgate.

Kenny, who has won 16 caps for England Under-21s, was also wanted by Premier League Burnley, but it looks as though he has opted for Parkhead, according to a report in Sky Sports News.

Schalke were reported to want to sign the player on a full-time basis, but had to drop their interest amid the financial constraints of the coronavirus pandemic.

The nine-in-a-row champions sold Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen for £11.5million last week and Kristoffer Ajer played in the No.2 position in the dismal 2-1 loss to St Mirren at Parkhead.

Lennon is likely to put the Norwegian back into central defence against Killie with Nir Bitton doubtful, Shane Duffy struggling and Preston’s Ben Davies, who had been lined up for a permanent shift, likely to join Liverpool later today.
