Kettling, lazy policing and fan danger

240

Kettling, def., the confinement by police of a group of demonstrators or protesters in a small area, as a method of crowd control.  The kettling of football fans now appears to be a standard part of police armoury, in Glasgow as well as in Paris.  As a fan, it feels that police don’t like fans congregating, or even queueing, outside a ground, they would prefer to ‘kettle’ them in a claustrophobic area, where a small number of officers and horses can establish authority over the crowd.

When kettled, you are immediately aware of the danger.  A crowd is a dynamic entity.  Crushing is not inevitable, but everyone is vulnerable to a few bad actors.  Decision making police always seem to be far away from the kettle.  Policies were laid down, probably days earlier, the officers, vehicles and horses involved in the enforcement are, at best, several minutes away from an authorised action to de-escalate an incident.

What happened at the Champions League final, hours before kick-off, a kilometre from the stadium, was lazy and dangerous policing.  French politicians and Uefa officials immediately blamed fans, that hoary old habit.  Fans – people – deserve better.

The police actions in Paris on Saturday evening did not happen spontaneously.  Rioting has been a growing problem in French football since the return of crowds, culminating in an out of control pitch invasion by Saint Etienne fans last night, after a penalty competition consigned them to Ligue 2 next season.  Police response to a legitimate issue, was to profile football fans prejudicial manner.

For decades across Europe, authoritites too lazy or understaffed to police properly, expose fans to danger and intimidation.

After a two year hiatus, the CQN Charity Golf Day will take place at Aberdour on Friday 2 September 2022.  Details will be available soon.

  1. That Rangers dossier to UEFA is pretty damming.

“Hundreds of Thousands of our peoples suffered a lack of dignity and due to a lack of water could not even raise a bigotted anti-catholic chant in their hoarsely dry mouths”

  2. Gene,

I think you’re right about the old Celtic end at Hampden. I grew up in the Jungle and never felt as frightened as I was trying to get on to the stairs at Hampden.

  3. Gene,

Now I think about it; Hampden was also the worst park for getting into. I remember (maybe the 65 Final), kids being passed over the heads of the queue and lifted over the turnstiles ,as the queues were so big and crowded.

Just wanted to say thank you all for your kind words of support and comfort, they were very much welcomed and appreciated.

  5. PRESTONPANS BHOYS @ 4.26

Sheer luck and good fortune that the tunnel exit about 14ft wide for thousands of fans to get out, never ended in tragedy.

Bizarre that decades later there have at least two near misses (Paris St Germain) and (Rainjurz) at the same Janefield bottle neck.

  6. St Stivs from earlier. I’m in the standing section and there is overcrowding at the big games and like Prestonpansbhoy, I’ve had to move people along the aisle. I’ve got to say that I have never felt in any danger, even when this situation is at it’s worst. It’s quite easy to get into the section from neighbouring sections. It’s nowhere near as daunting as being in the jungle, but when Celtic score and the section is packed, it’s awesome.

Having looked at various clips of young, agile fans climbing the fences at the CL Final, then bolting at high speed to evade the lackluster attempts of stewards to stop them, it was quite noticeable that none of them ( at least in the clips I saw ) were wearing Liverpool regalia. They may well have been opportunistic locals taking advantage of the chaos.

Not that anyone on here would ever stoop to such dastardly behaviour.😊

  8. In a time when we have a cost of living crisis the Welsh assembly has voted to spend more money on government by increasing their number by 36 to a total of 96. That’s on top of 40 Westminster MPs and local councillors.

How much government do 2.5 million people need.

  9. Queenie in Balmoral hope she can get a train back doon the road in time for the big swally

  10. One in memory of our Garry.

Look how tall Jimmy Delaney was.

Imagine this, he played for Maley, who had played in Celtics first game.

He played with Jimmy McGrory and Malky McDonald.

He scored the winning goal in the Victory in Europe international a 1-0 win against England.

He signed for Matt Busby at United.

He played for some of the favourites in iRELAND with Derry and Cork.

    John Kennedy granda.

Saint Stivs, Garry told me about Jimmy Delaney playing in the same team with McGrory. James Edward McGrory, the greatest ever Celt. 💚

  12. PB and Gorbals Tam, ta for eye witness accounts and inputs, much appreciated.

I have to confess I have wanted to get in the section and go up and watch again with the family, but every attempt I ever made was repealled by the stewards at the bottom of the stairs.

Better informed than the ravings of a mad man who watches it on tv.

    cheers.

aye, we had one long session on a friday one time where I dug out old pathe reels that are on the national archive, he was some talent right enough. what a story.

BRRB @ 6.48 James Edward McGrory greatest ever Celt undeniably of his time…but so long before my time I consider that a debatable point. Some say Charles Patrick Tully, again way before my time. Cesar would be another great shout…again before my time at his height….mine is undoubtedly Henke.

What am trying to say is yer an auld bassa ;-))

Saint Stivs, J.E McGrorys goalscoring record is phenomenal, as you know. In the top leagues to this day he still holds all British records and his goals to games ratio is unbelievable. He retired in 1937 ffs!

  16. James Edward McGrory couldn’t have been that good – look how many caps he got. 😞

  17. And as for that Larsson bloke – should’ve been hooked at Easter rd and shown the door.

  18. TheLurkinTim on

Gene…aye…Scotland caps as a measure of just how shite the Celtic Quintuple winners really were…it’s like there was an obvious blindspot where we were concerned

Good evening all from the Tolbooth via the Shipbank. Both absolutely mobbed. I’m like that Beach Bhoys song – I get around. 🤣

  20. Congratulations to the celtic wimmin on being crowned scottish cup champions.

  21. As I was growing up, my Dad regaled me with stories of Malky MacDonald. In his opinion, the best Celt he had seen but later he reckoned it was Bobby Murdoch. Imo, Bobby is the greatest I have had the pleasure to see.

  22. Interesting interview on Ch 4 news with Sandra Howard, wife of Michael Howard ( he of the ‘something of the night about him’).

She’s a Liverpool fan and was at the Stade de France. She flatly contradicted the account of events being promulgated by UEFA and the French authorities. And echoed by a couple of posters on here.

Sorry mate but won’t make tomorrow.

My horrible cough has improved to…..a cough, but wouldn’t expose anyone to it.

I spoke to BMCUWP last week and he is aware.

I hope you all have a great day and give TLT a hug from me please!
