FORMER Celtic chairman Kevin Kelly has passed away at the age of 88.
A popular figure, he was involved with the club at board level from 1971 to 1994.
Kelly was descended from Hoops legend James Kelly, the team’s first-ever captain.
A club statement read: “Celtic Football Club can confirm that former Chairman, Kevin Kelly passed away peacefully yesterday morning after a short illness.
“Kevin was Celtic Chairman from 1991-1994, and a director and passionate supporter of the club over many years.
“Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with Kevin’s family at this very difficult time.”
It is estimated that between his time as a supporters and a board member and afterwards, Kelly attended more Celtic matches than anyone else in history.
He was also at the forefront of the club’s search for a new stadium in the 1990s, which ultimately ended in Celtic Park being renovated.
In the 1980s, he worked tirelessly in the backround as he relentlessly promoted the commercial wing of the Parkhead club.
After Fergus McCann led a takeover of the club in 1994, Kelly stepped down.
However, he continued as an honorary member.
