Real and Atletico Madrid have met twice in the Champions League final (2014, 2016), once in the semi-final (2017) and once in the quarters (2015). Atletico’s only win over those games was effectively a dead rubber, as they went into the 2017 semi-final second leg 3-0 down.
The teams meet again tonight at the Bernabeu in the round of 16 first leg. Atletico sit a point behind Barcelona in second place in La Liga, two points ahead of Real and are unbeaten in the last 8 matches against their more illustrious rivals.
I find it difficult to praise their manager, Diego Simeone. There is nothing likeable about the man, but personality aside, he is remarkably effective. One point about Atletico’s season in particular is worth highlighting. Antoine Griezmann (33) has played more minutes than any other outfield Atletico player this season, and he has only played 80% of the time.
Simeone shares the load around, protects key players from burnout and utilises the resultant space in the team to develop fringe players. Many components go into any side who sit about Real Madrid in La Liga this deep into the season, but few can be more important than this one.
Celtic have rotated more this season than any I recall, although Callum McGregor’s historic low of playing 87% of our games is due to injury (and not being forced to play through an injury).
Atletico compete against the biggest two clubs in world football; Celtic are resourced well above anyone in Scotland. Scope for us to rest and rotate should be higher than anyone in Europe. It is a metric we should measure.
We might look at the Due Diligence concept later in the week. At first glance, it appears as poorly understood in Scottish football circles as insolvencey rules were in early 2012.

Looking at that image for the redevelopment of the main stand I assume it’s for illustrative purposes only as if it were to be rebuilt there is no way the Centenary season facade would be kept, it’s not fit for purpose now never mind into the future, it’s almost 40 years old as it is.
On David Low he expertly outlines how a rebuild of the main stand and major upgrade of the now 30 year old other stands could be financed and also give fans 21st century facilities and also be a money maker.

there also.

My season tickets are in the South Stand.
Part of me would dearly love it to be redeveloped and spectacularly so – iconic architecture stuff – as the fabric is old and, ergonomically, it isn’t fit for purpose.
Another part of me could happily stick with the current structure.
Our seats and view are great
I don’t buy as many pies and bovril as I used to.
I’d be out of my seat for at least a season (more likely two)
… and I’d anticipate having to pay a premium for that which I already have.

Was something I was trying to persuade paul to organise
It shouldnt be hard – am sure there are a couple plugins available to make it happen, rather than recoding the entire site….
If we build it they will come.
what’s paul67 ‘s day job ? out of curiosity !
I listened to the David Low appearance on Celtic Exchange this morning.
Despite being asked during the pod, I thought David failed to explain adequately where the return for any would be hun investor would come from ?
David spoke of anywhere between £100-150 million going in to buy rangers, settle the loans and upgrade infrastructure and club operations.
But where is the return on that ?
Yesterday we announced that Celtic will compete in the inaugural Cork Super Cup this summer, when the Bhoys will take on Cork City FC at the SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on July 8.
Adam Idah was in Cork yesterday to announce the match, where he said: “It’s really exciting. It’s strange, I really didn’t think I’d play in Cork again, or play for Celtic, and now I’m doing both so it’s really exciting for me, my family and friends to come and see me play.”
As a Season Ticket holder, you have exclusive pre-sale access to secure your seats before they go on general sale. Tickets will be available from 9am tomorrow (Wednesday, March 5) before general sale at 9am on Friday, March 7.
Tickets are priced:
East Terrace
Adult €28, Child €18
South Stand Upper
Adult €35, Child €20
South Stand Lower
Adult €45, Child €25, Family €115
Booking fees apply online.
just got an email from celtic about the friendly with Cork City in July.
prices are £28, £35 and £45.
absolutely incredible.
even more incredible is the fact that to try and justify it they have marketed it as the Cork Super Cup.
surely has to be one of the biggest piss-takes i have ever seen.
sorry, i should have said € and not £. but add on the booking fee and its not far off!
An Dun, there isn’t one all else equal, but as I’ve written a few times RIFC has “option value” i.e. a £100m investment would pay off handsomely if the huns were invited to join a European super-league in the next 5-10 years. So the American private equity chaps place their chips on the table, run RIFC at break-even and wait.
However, I really do not think they know what they’re getting in to. Auldheid captures it very well in his post earlier. Essentially the American chaps may think they have 10 years, but the reality is they’ll be run out of town quickly if they don’t deliver immediately.

aye,
i guessed this was more of a marketing exercise than something celtic were driving, hence i said ‘they’ without specifying.
but whoever ‘they’ are though are still taking the piss.
and theres nothing to stop celtic saying they will only agree to the game if theres sensible pricing for the fans.
but thats a principle lost on those who run our club.

the hibs cup game is only 25 quid (for season ticket holders) on sunday which is a very important game, unlike the Cork jolly.
having €45 tickets is ridiculous.

Well thats me told. Must attend Parkhead more to have a valid opinion. Or better still just agree with what everyone else is saying.

The return is when they sell it, everyone knows they could be run better, the new guys think they can do enough in 5-7 years, maybe as much as 10 to make it worth much more than they pay for it
The parc.
45000 capacity.
Plenty of cheaper seats available.
What was charged a few years ago at the aviva tournament ?
Digress slightly, but my concern is that, and history has proven , football is cyclical, ups and downs etc.
We are and have been at the top for a long time, but all things come to an end.
Not soon, but it will happen again
KINGlUbO
Its a guess but I would imagine they aren’t the first group to look at The Huns with a view to a long term return
They would look at us, see what can be done with a club in Scotland, and look at the strategic advantages we have over them. Ten thousand more seats in your ground doesnt equate to the difference in financial performance of the two clubs. If we can do it why cant The Huns, if they can match our expertise and experience. They will think they can match it and do better.
They wont care about the Hun support, they’ll pay someone to take the flack, they already have such low expectations anyone saying the right thing to them will get away with fleecing them for years.
The big if is if they can turn them around to become as well run as us.
good win for villa in the end
Tonight Matthew I’m going to be an…. Atleti supporter

March 4, 1994 was the date Fergus McCann took us over
The huns are 31 years behind us
They may well catch us up, but they have decades to go
i can remember old rangers losing 3 games in a row.
but i cannot remember them losing 4 in a row at home.

i like many of the NFL stadiums because of the way they are put together looking a bit piecemeal. and the lack of a roof makes them look even better.
cant be having that in scotland though because of the weather.
