Kicked, robbed but also second best

318

Yes, I know, you could have put money on Bobby Madden turning in a performance like that, no doubt someone did.  Still, Celtic teams for generations have had to overcome odds determined by the men in black, even without the unpunished brutality on show, Celtic were second best.

Newco applied a soft press, allowing our central defenders time on the ball but tightly competing for space in the middle of the park.  McGregor, Hatate and Rogic were swamped in the middle of the park, and when the ball reached either Taylor or Juranovic, they were seldom presented with even one good forward option.

As a consequence, Celtic repeatedly lost possession inside their own half, inviting wave after wave of attack.  Change was necessary and when it arrived 10 minutes after halftime.  Kyogo and Matt O’Riley replaced Liel Abada and Tom Rogic, Celtic enjoyed their best spell of the match for the next 20 minutes.

O’Riley in particular caused Newco problems and within 10 minutes Greg Taylor gave Celtic the lead.  Cameron Carter-Vickers soon has a great chance to double the advantage but hit the crossbar with a shot in front of goal.

Newco responded on 75 minutes by replacing Aribo and Jack with Davis and Arfield.  The latter levelled the score three minutes later and Newco were never again under sustained pressure.  The winning goal in extra time was narrowly offside.

Those of us in the stadium were unaware of this, so left the ground with a sense that Celtic failed to match their opponents tactically, while bizarrely lacking energy against a team who had played extra time three days earlier.

Two weeks ago Celtic were packed the midfield tighter at Ibrox and were able to find options when passing out of defence.  When we took the game to Newco the lack of precision and coordinated movement neutered what had previously worked well.

Credit where due to van Bronkhurst.  He outmanoeuvred a good coach yesterday.  Nothing was done to change an ineffective midfield until 55 minutes and there was no response after Newco took control after their double substitution.

Celtic were kicked off the park, literally on one occasion.  It was not until Anthony Ralston came on that we saw a robust response.  The game is not always about the pretty stuff, some of the greatest Celtic teams had granite hard geniuses.

‘The ref issue hase been discussed aplenty on here over the years, the excuse about the country being soo small and the majorty being invested is irrelevant drivel.’

    ###

The root clause of the problem is that there are insufficient impartial referees for the game to be run properly.

The reason why there aren’t enough suitable referees is twofold:

    1. the comparatively small population

    2. the level of division (along footballing footballing lines) among the population. Not just Celtic and the huns, but Hearts and Hibs, and every other local or other rivalry. Just try picking totally impartial, disinterested referees for every match of a season. I doubt it’s possible.

I’m not sure how the root cause of a problem can be irrelevant drivel.

Th referee ‘strike’ a few seasons ago showed the way forward. Foreign refs with no skin in the game.

Time for the Celtic board to grow a pair ( a real long shot ) and give them no tickets , zero.

I think it’s very clear, actually as clear as seeing the blatant reffing yday, that there would be no change with independence.

SNP will be in charge and their love of the cheats and hatred of the good guys is equally obvious. It has been pointed out that sturgeon made no comment on the disgraceful attack on the celtic team and physio. In some ways I pity celtic fans in Scotland, who are trying to gain independence. I absolutely abhor the UK establishment for their crimes against humanity and Ireland in particular (I’m in Belfast), but to gain independence you must vote in the detestable sturgeon.

Sorry for the politics but just responded to the question, which was ultimately about the ref.

Unfortunately the two issues are conjoined.

I usually try to avoid the politics (and religion and anything else other than Celtic) BUT would you really expect the SNP to be in power following independence? Or following the election after independence?

A lot of people just now are voting SNP only until we get independence and then they will vote for the party that best represents their outlook. I’d like to think if we ever achieved independence that the SNP would be obsolete at that point; mission accomplished and all.

  10. Madden allowed a rough house of a game and it was almost as if the Huns had prior knowledge of this and acted accordingly.

However as previous Posters have said Celtic Teams of the past would have stood up to it better, there is a softness in our midfield, if we are allowed play we are magic but in a tight physical battle we struggle.

We are where we are, we have a lot of good players & Ange has done remarkably well to have us in our present League position. If we see out the next few games and win the League it will be one of the sweetest wins ever and yesterday’s game will never bother us again,

Going forward we have to boost the squad with bigger, more physical players.

We are on a new journey, there will be ups & downs,

Let’s stick together & see how far Ange can bring us.

  12. Lundstrom running around like a talentless Broony, fouling with impunity. How long would it have taken Madden to book him?,then send him off for repeating.I have no idea what Ange was thinking, sitting watching what was happening. To send on those sub’s when it should have been Mc Carthy to sort some of that mob out.Biton not included,a disgrace. Two footballers to compete against “Raging Bulls” with no restraints on them, how could he let that continue.Even putting Ralston in there,to get some tackles alongside Mc Carthy.

We let them bully us off the park.

Will they be fined for singing sectarian songs? It never ever happens, no matter how many times it happens. We should highlight this as the main reason for them not to receive any tickets v us at Celtic Park. Highlight it for goodness sake, no one else will! por cierto

Yesterday was a case in point, that we should complain about referees, after we win a game,it just sounds like sour grapes after a defeat

    Paul67 your summary is correct

BUT the reason we were second best is because we were kicked and robbed

Yesterday was the most blatant I have seen

A real professional performance by a referee influencing the game

Bassey was allowed to “grapple” Rogic without penalty so repeated the foul

Lundstram was allowed to hack whenever he went into a tackle

Allowing them the freedom to do what was needed to stop us playing is the reason we were second best

My frustration is diluted only because we are 6 points clear

My one and only ambition for Celtic this season is to win the league

Win our next 2 games – mission accomplished

The league Cup a Bonus the Scottish Cup I don’t care

    Just win the league

  20. Before the game – about 15 to kick off.

a group , early twenties, no colours , nothing to identify them at all maybe 8 of them total, managed to walk right through the main car-park and as far down as the barriers onto aitkenhead road, out their faces on something, they were abusing the stewards who they said had directed them to the wrong place, there was a menace about them, quite obvious.

stewards redirected them, back up the main upper stand, but they then tried to get up the set of stairs that is section h celtic end. stewards again took the brubt of it as they are turned away, more abuse,

now what astounded me was this is in front of some police, every on eof them could have been lifted, coralled and lifted, there were enough polis about but nothinghapppens, they then turn and start back along the main stand.

I witnessed this because i am hobbling along and found the walk a bit difficult woth a sore knee.

I get to k section (celtic) and they are there again. telling a black steward to “just fuckin let us in, we have had enough of this pish ya b c”. we got sent doon here cos of the fighting up there

bad enough to have heads turning of the few celtic supporters going in,

now another steward, and a first aider gets involved, checks a ticket and sends them to the next bloxk along O section *rangers) , more abuse, but now they seem tp sober up and get emboldend, they properly group together, was it an act before, was it looking for trouble in plain sight. is it drug related.

scarcely anyone about but there was police witnessing this.

one left with an FTP shout,

so if you never ever lift them, not a one, let it go on and make no arrests, then what happens with the behaviour.

kinda like Madden not booking players for dangerous fouls.

anyways, when i got in what a treat for the eyes those 10,000+ tricolurs where, even in the dear seats

  21. Paul67

You always look second best when you’re kicked, robbed, and lose.

Now that the dust hasn’t settled.

We lost by the odd goal in three and were inches from a 2-0 lead, but somehow yesterdays defeat is still very raw and come Sunday we’ll be frenzied for three points. This league is far from won, and the subtle but staunch leanings towards Sevco contributed greatly to the new clubs cause and its ageing side.

From the ‘Celtic depth’ only Ralston and O’Riley made a contribution when called from the bench, after Rogic as predicted was targeted by the Sevco hammer throwers. Tom doesn’t like the rough stuff, Jota and Abada were also chopped down and by the time you see James Forrest as a saviour in this fixture especially, you know your tea is out.

The midfield was outweighed from the start and although Daizen Maeda always gets pass marks for effort he doesn’t fill the goal getting role, indeed all the Japanese players look jaded having played in two leagues either side of the globe non stop. The new found depth along with our stars, will require to step for Sunday, bizarre some were blowing yesterday.

    Step up again Celtic.

    ——————-

COPS are investigating alleged sectarian and anti-Catholic chanting from Rangers fans following yesterday’s clash against Celtic.

Video footage has emerged of a large group of fans shoving officers who escorted them to Hampden Park on Sunday afternoon, reports the Scottish Sun.

According to the Sun, they can be heard chanting “F*** the pope”.

The force confirmed that the group were escorted to the stadium due to concerns for safety, as there was a “high risk of disorder” between fans.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow said: “The Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Rangers at Hampden Park in Glasgow on Sunday, April 17 was a large and complex operation that involved officers working with a range of partners across the country to ensure the match went ahead safely and with minimal disruption to the wider public.

“Police Scotland had a proportionate plan in place to support the event and to deal swiftly with acts of violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour.

“Prior to kick off a group of Rangers supporters were escorted to the stadium.

“The focus of the policing operation at this time was public safety and the quick movement away from an area where there was a high risk of disorder between supporter groups.

“Video evidence footage was taken at that time and enquiries are now ongoing into alleged sectarian and anti-Catholic singing from those being escorted.

“Anti-Catholic and indeed all forms of hate crime are completely unacceptable and today’s events again remind us of the ongoing challenges we have in some parts of Scotland with sectarianism.

“Police Scotland must of course play its part in a wider and joined up response and I expect arrests to be made following today’s match.”

Scotland’s shame is that is not prepared to face into its deep-rooted anti-Catholic/anti-Irish mindset.

Would it change if we were independent? I honestly don’t know.

    —-

Yes of course it would change – our advisories would, overnight, become much bigger fish in a a smaller pool – a pool with the same population as Yorkshire. We have more friends in the than the total population of Scotland – probably double the number.

Our 15% have been shown to be reviled in Scotland for one hundred and fifty years. Those who run the devolved government have been part of it during their eighty years of existence. Latterly they have cleverly conned some of us to vote for them by aligning National/Unionist politics and rhetoric with Ulster – sadly 350k have fallen for it. It is the ONLY clever thing that the Nationalists have done in their almost twenty years in power in Scotland. If our people stop supporting them, they lose power at Holyrood and lose more than half their Westminster MPs.

That’s why they will keep conning. They would revert to type in the event of independence and cast us off like a Halloween disguise, our purpose having been served.
