Kicked, robbed but also second best

318

Yes, I know, you could have put money on Bobby Madden turning in a performance like that, no doubt someone did.  Still, Celtic teams for generations have had to overcome odds determined by the men in black, even without the unpunished brutality on show, Celtic were second best.

Newco applied a soft press, allowing our central defenders time on the ball but tightly competing for space in the middle of the park.  McGregor, Hatate and Rogic were swamped in the middle of the park, and when the ball reached either Taylor or Juranovic, they were seldom presented with even one good forward option.

As a consequence, Celtic repeatedly lost possession inside their own half, inviting wave after wave of attack.  Change was necessary and when it arrived 10 minutes after halftime.  Kyogo and Matt O’Riley replaced Liel Abada and Tom Rogic, Celtic enjoyed their best spell of the match for the next 20 minutes.

O’Riley in particular caused Newco problems and within 10 minutes Greg Taylor gave Celtic the lead.  Cameron Carter-Vickers soon has a great chance to double the advantage but hit the crossbar with a shot in front of goal.

Newco responded on 75 minutes by replacing Aribo and Jack with Davis and Arfield.  The latter levelled the score three minutes later and Newco were never again under sustained pressure.  The winning goal in extra time was narrowly offside.

Those of us in the stadium were unaware of this, so left the ground with a sense that Celtic failed to match their opponents tactically, while bizarrely lacking energy against a team who had played extra time three days earlier.

Two weeks ago Celtic were packed the midfield tighter at Ibrox and were able to find options when passing out of defence.  When we took the game to Newco the lack of precision and coordinated movement neutered what had previously worked well.

Credit where due to van Bronkhurst.  He outmanoeuvred a good coach yesterday.  Nothing was done to change an ineffective midfield until 55 minutes and there was no response after Newco took control after their double substitution.

Celtic were kicked off the park, literally on one occasion.  It was not until Anthony Ralston came on that we saw a robust response.  The game is not always about the pretty stuff, some of the greatest Celtic teams had granite hard geniuses.

    First of all .

Well done to the Green brigade for distributing and funding the 10,000 tricolours at Hampden.

It was wonderful seeing the Celtic end bloom and sway with our colours.

I’m not a fan of smoke bombs.

But the tricolour of smoke yesterday, added to the flegs .

We really did out do them

This is the type of mindless claptrap that defines a large minority of our support. The “going to war under a flag” was a complete turn-off to the vast majority of Celtic supporters. It was childish playground stuff – the kind of stuff most of us left behind years ago. The only thing that I, a season-ticket holder for c30 years, has in common with the GB and their ilk, is that they profess to be Celtic supporters….but are they, or, is Celtic just the platform of choice that allows them to operate?

Madden allowed a rough house of a game and it was almost as if the Huns had prior knowledge of this and acted accordingly.

*Reminds me of the scene in the Godfather when Michael is to meet Sollozza and McCluskey prior to shooting them

Sonny receives a phone call telling him where the meet is to be so they prepare for the assassination.

So why the surprise yesterday, they knew well in advance they could assault, kick and maim our players and yet it took an og tae beat us.

Cast your mind back tae the game at Parkheid, he tore them apart, 3 going on double figures.

Next game its eyes in the back of his heid column who is scheitd scared before he gets on the park, we win but it was a different game.

Then yesterday their satanical plan falls intae place and nobody it seems gives a donald duck.

  4. Still say Bollongoli should have been given more game time replacing Taylor now and again,Seen him when we lost 1/0 at Almondvale played ok plenty of pace down the left side ,seems to me he has been made the scapegoat for that defeat.

  5. Premier sports never showed the tri colour smoke bombs and 10k flags waving choosing instead to concentrate on groups of 50 or so Celtic fans at a time when the teams came out.

A bit like SKY not showing CP in it’s best light when they’re covering our home games.

  6. The vast majority of Celtic supporters at hampden joined in the flag waving and the songbook, including tright in the middel of the dear seats.

As w drove through this rural community we noticed several tricolours, she questioned that until I reminded her that even in the former orange Ontario the Easter Rebellion is still revered.

I realise we shouldn’t really be talking politics but in the light of what I contributed earlier, I thought it might be of some interest to inform you all that my cousin, who started life in Parkhead and was Provincial of the Marist Brothers in our Centenary year told me this afternoon that he would be voting for Independence in any referendum.

    What mindless claptrap you post!

  14. I did apologise for the politics and do so again.

I don’t think it inappropriate to join the vile cheats with the vile refs and the SNP. So what if she called out the assaults on our personnel. Actions speak louder than words I think. Compare the punishment we received for bolingoli to the treatment of the cheats and their vile fans who brought Glasgow to a standstill twice last year. Chaperoned by the police for heavens sake!

  16. Don’t blame the referee. He was only doing his job. What he is being paid to do by the sfa and that is to help sevco. They are a bunch of brazen, barefaced and shameless cheats.

Our chairman, at the last last agm, when asked about the referees asked “what can we do?” I think this

was the wrong message to send out. This gives the SFA carte blanche to continue with their nefarious behaviour. This can only get worse for us.

What I mean is, can someone organise an electronic petition that ALL supporters can click onto, then send it to FIFA. Miss out UEFA as there are corrupt ones (you know who) in there. Imagine hundreds of thousands of Emails to someone at the top of FIFA getting hit. We could explain why we’re doing it i.e. our club officials are too scared. Especially share holders.

*that’s the most sensible post I’ve read since yesterday, too many looking for faults within our club when we all know where the problem lies although I would give FIFA the body swerve tae.

Scotland were sending one of the very few honest officials, former Clyde chairman and devout Christian John McBeth, for a position in Switzerland, he was hounded out as he threatened to expose the “mafia family” that controlled our game.

It is no secret, pun intended, that the craft also have a huge influence, not just on the Scottish game but Europe too so our best option is for Celtic supporters to do a “Tiocfaidh ár lá”, ie ourselves alone.

The club’s hands are tied as allegedly any club that threatens legal action against their parent company will be banned from all FIFA regulated tournaments, not just them but member clubs as well as the national side, disnae stop OFFC though.

Now we have a highly educated support, no longer just navvies, miners etc,was going to say shipyard workers but they were few and far between at one time.

The brains trust are there now and surely amoung our support we can organise a group that will approach ludge hunden and not just threaten them but also their sponsors.

Adidas, Vauxhall, William Hill and no laughing at the back the UK’s fastest-growing online used car marketplace etc to name a few with boycotting their services.

Hit them in the pocketbook, when their high hifalutin lifestyles and salaries start to shrink they’ll think twice before taking on the biggest and best club in the country, the mighty Celtic.

It’s up to us bhoys as I’ve said our board’s hands are unfortunately tied, ours aren’t, but now that blatter and platini are heading for court again the timing is perfect.

Failure to act will only see the same again and again and again recurring.

  19. Forget yesterday – it’s history. The only question is does the squad possess enough fight and desire to get the title over the line. If it does then this will be a very very successful season and we will have come a long way. The fact that we still have a long way to go can then be addressed – first things first. A Scottish Cup win would have been seen to be worthless if we then had frittered away the league. The ball is still in our court, but we need to recover with a steel-like resolve.

  20. TONTINE TIM ,I agree supporters can have a big say and the power to stop all this cheating and Corruption that’s been allowed for years in this Country ,and you are correct in saying that the present board at Celtic haven’t the guts to rock the boat ,they sit in the comfy seats get all the freebies home and away plus a good bonus at the end of the season,

  21. 2 minutes into second half, rogic is manhandled 4 times in a second, he trows his arms up, the rangers players fall over trying to break way ………

    decision fould against rogic.

  22. When I read some of the posts, political ones,I must have grown up in a different City.Obviously those Tory and Labour governments had cracked right down on the anti Catholic, sectarian walks that took over the whole city all summer. The bigoted Masonic referees employed by the SFA must have brought down some wrath onto their employers.Must have done, right.?The singing and chanting must have been pulled up and a scandal made of it by the Tories and Labour.Must have, right.?

You know like the way NS called it out after George Sq.

They must have, even once, mentioned in the 7 or 8 decades.Right?.

No,?well at least I know what kind of City I was raised in under Unionist rule ,thought I was imagining it all.

  23. As for ordinary decent Celtic Fans hoping for some to have fans Present on the board,no chance ,I gave up with the present board when we should have broke the bank last season to get the Ten ,but no they handed to Sevco on a plate ,what surprised me was 2who came from working class roots ie Willie Haughey and Michael Mc Donald and big Celtic Fans was for Desmond to go into the January transfer window and spend big to make sure we got the Ten ,sadly it didn’t happen.

  24. 49 minutes, roofe from behind slices down Maeda, red card in every other league.

  28. at the game, I dint hear much of the old firmists song book, drowned out by being in the celtic sections, however, the premier tv microphones must have been truned up to capture thems, and down for the celtic ends.

  29. JHB The day your views correspond with the vast majority of Celtic Supporters is the day I’m out.

Big Jimmy be careful with your language pal, I don’t want to see you sidelined again,

All football teams lose games, we were kicked out of the game with the Ref’s blessing but we are also realistic enough to accept that we didn’t play well.

Yet not playing well and being kicked for fun, it took almost 2hours of football before we fell behind.

It’s commonly said on here that the Huns are shite.

Reality is that they are not shite, There run in Europe proves that, they are formidable opposition.

They have given occasional shite displays as have we, overall we have done extremely well to get ourselves into our present League position.

A couple of more wins, get over that line & let the real important Celebrations begin.

By this point I think I was laughing at the ref but not in a good way.

Watching the match first time my biggest impression (other than the ref) was that we had more individuals and less of a team – the number of times many players went for the glory rather than squaring / playing another player through was unreal.

Play as a team and the spread of goals will come as it did St. Johnstone.

  32. The first sentence of Paul’s leader is right on the money.

The Sevs won’t take that same game plan into their matches v. Leipzig for two main reasons:

    1) VAR will see action taken and ;

    2) the referees will be independent.

I’d also guess their “European song book” will be in use rather than the FTP/FB’s/BB version which got laldy yesterday. Not much changes in this wonderfully progressive Scozia.

after the game i read all this stuff about us being lightweight, and the reo had a bad game.

watching again i am not coming to that conclusion, we were not really outmuscled and the ball taken off the “lightweights”, what really happened is they got continually fouled without getting punished,
