Kieran’s niggles

151

Kieran Tierney:s injury, picked up while playing for Scotland against Iceland, has spooked some Celtic fans.  It shouldn’t.  The injury itself is apparently nothing significant. Footballers play with what are euphemistically called ‘knocks’ all the time. Few are ever 100% clear of some ailment.

Whatsmore, we should expect Kieran to be fit around 70% of the time. If he manages 80% across his time at Celtic, it would be an exceptional improvement.

Brendan will rest him for games he can afford to and play him when he has a ‘niggle’, another useful euphemism we use when we accept playing a footballer with an injury. This is football. We need to learn to accept it when it comes to Kieran and the rest of the squad.

    I have mentioned this before.

In my old job every fit up or refurbishment we did for often massive floorplates started with the basic Sustaianble Real Estate question of –

what can we salvage and reuse or repurpose or donate.

The simple best outcome was to absolutely reduce overall waste. And if we couldnt use something again, we found a partner to send stuff to Africa and kitted out schools.

Celtic plc, in my opinion miss a fundamental ESG easy win here by doing these sort of things, I mean it is in the very ethos of the club.

Last close-season I was appaled to see skips outside Celtic park full to the brim of metal entry signage, exit signs, mixed electricals and even tins of paint, all in the same skips, I doubt they are getting sorted at a further point in the disposal process.

But like the PARADISE BANNERS two years ago, and now the dug outs, could they not be reused ? could the banner not have been repurposed for use inside the stadium ? A player image reused at stairwell and vomitories ? You go to your entry point and it is now section 144, the Tommy Burns passageway, etc etc.

The removed Dugouts are they away for a refurb or being scrapped ? Could they be reused by St Rochs or someone else ? Would an organisation want to buy them ? If we had a museum could they not be placed there, more radically could they bbe put in the car-park for the CQN posse to use on match days ?

Do anything Celtic, but do it with purpose, and communicate it.

I am sure there have been hunders of individual items that Celtic supporters would love to have in the garden huts, in their garages, in the bhoys bedrooms and so on.

I have also mentioned, we should have a Sustainability officer in the PLC organisation, I despair some that Barrowfield, ironically – ISNT GREEN ENOUGH.

I’ll be amazed if we go into our first competitive matches with a stronger first eleven.

  3. Callum joined Fulham at the age of 13 and signed his first professional deal in the summer of 2023.

The striker, who has represented both England and Wales at youth level, is a ruthless finisher. Across both age groups, Osmand scored over 30 goals during the 2023/24 campaign.

He rounded off that memorable individual season by grabbing the headlines in the Premier League Cup Final, scoring a hat-trick against Tottenham in what was his first time playing at Craven Cottage.

Last term, Callum scored 18 goals across all competitions, form that saw him earn a PL2 Player of the Season nomination.

Asked a mate who is a Fulham fanatic , he said he’s not bad ( faint praise ?)

Is any better than we have ?

  4. Brighton have bid €40m for 18 year old Charalampos Kostoulos. Less than 20 starts for Olympiacos, no international caps.

A mixture of an inflated market for younger players because of who the the big EPL teams are buying and clubs not wanting to see Brighton make tens of millions from buying and selling their best prospects means prices have gone up for them.

The 60 or 70 game window Paul67 told us about might be shrinking, markets closer to home becoming more difficult and pricier for us.

The rewards are there for clubs with smart player trading models that can evolve, but with more clubs at all levels looking to benefit, and with even the big fish in the EPL having to trade smartly to comply with financial regs it’s not getting any easier.

  5. Maeda,Kuhn, going nowhere. FFS,,give it a rest.We need a LB,aaaarrghhhh.Since when?

Any chance we could give Anderson as chance.Perfect for him to be back up..Or must we spend?.Schllupp also a choice.Only one missing from up front,is Jota.A replacement,a certainty.Jamesy can play a lot More than he did last year.

We will buy. Stop listening to the Weary Wullies,,fekin doom and gloom.

I was delighted with the squad we had within 7 mo the of Ange joining. We generated a fair bit of profit from it (even on the likes of Bernebei and Lawal and Oh etc) and have not invested well since.

Frankly I don’t care who is to blame but what is clear is we have not done well this past 2 years. The manager has had 3 windows in charge and it is getting worse.

  7. bournesouprecipe on

Somebody will post they don’t see the point in selling Daniel Cummings and buying Calum Osmand

  8. Someone mentioned earlier about KT’s injury situation being caused by his treatment in his young days at Celtic. Only too true. He was recognised as class right away and the cluggers of Scottish football, which is full of them, kicked him to hell and back, long before he left for Arsenal. Awful stuff.

What is every bit as bad is that the MIBs gave him no protection from the “get right tore into them” mentality, which still rears it’s ugly head way too often here.

I agree the summer of 23 window was not given a chance by our manager.

Not seen Holm do worse than McCowan or indeed Narowki do worse than Trusty when given the chance.

Since Kuhn in the winter 23/4 I have not seen an inspired signing who has improved the squad.

Maybe Engels or Idah will but maybe not.

We win a double last year against a weaker rangers who were in a chaotic state and generally a poorer level of competition. We were not close to Ange years team in good football terms or achievement.

Sure the new format in CL and as easy a draw as we could have dreamed of had us all excited but the reality is we would have really disappointed had we not got to the last 24 given our fixtures.

Loads on here are happy with what we have seen recently in recruitment and development. Personally I am not impressed. I really fear for our direction of travel.

  11. The transfer window doesn’t open until 16th June yet you’d think we were last out of the gates. We then have until September 1 to do business.

(There is a window from June 1-June 10 for clubs going to the Club World Cup).

  12. Celtic40me

    To be clear

Celtic no longer have a smart player trading model.

    Stop fooling yourself.

We had this for a few years. We have a guy recruited from lower leagues in England who Brendan trusts and we hope agents offer us a few decent options. Our rivals now have a structure for a player trading model in development.

Both players have very similar profiles, but one is Welsh and one is Scottish.

Time will tell, but we need to give young players game time and opportunity.

So given time I will come back to you.

I think the window is open to all clubs if their FAs approve it – we could have bought or sold if we chose to.

A bit of FIFA trying to big up their competition I reckon, and making it possible for clubs to turn up with some flashy bling. Trent Alexander-Arnold being a good example

  15. BURNLEY78 on 9TH JUNE 2025 4:58 PM

I don’t think it’s black and white. Brendan pays attention to what people think, and he’s aware of the need for some sort of development model, albeit on a considerably smaller scale than what some of us would like. Hopefully it’s not just lip service when he talks about it.

We will probably see a compromise like we saw with Engel this Summer – few, less risky signings, “known” players with higher transfer fees who are more likely to have an immediate impact.

They don’t come cheap however, and their price is going up all the time as teams in the bigger leagues look to miss us out and buy direct

The structure and personnel are still there, even if Brendan chooses not to use them as much.

Just read a Fulham fan site that has an article regarding the young Welsh striker that is about to join Celtic. Most contributors are gutted that he is leaving. He seems highly regarded. I wonder you will get the credit if we sign him. 😂

I agree the summer of 23 window was not given a chance by our manager.

I didn’t say the summer window of 23 wasn’t given a chance, I said it continues to have players away on loan, now returning and along with others not showing in the first team and squad progress

Not seen Holm do worse than McCowan or indeed Narowki do worse than Trusty when given the chance.

I seen Holm struggle at Parkhead and stupidly sent off in Europe, he’s managed three appearances in the MLS, maybe he’ll come back as decent as McCowan – but I doubt it.

Trusty has been disappointing but fits the manager’s preferred pairing ( right foot – left foot )

Nobody has seen Nawrocki more than BR and he is obviously going to prefer the player he signed, FWIW according to ITK not surprisingly, we have actively tried to loan or sell Nawrocki back to Poland or elsewhere in Europe.

There are decisions to be made at Centre Back IMO.

Since Kuhn in the winter 23/4 I have not seen an inspired signing who has improved the squad.

Kuhn was tracked since a friendly against Rapid a long time before Brendan, so he fits the ‘recruitment team’ model and funnily enough he’s the only one you’re happy with

Maybe Engels or Idah will but maybe not.

Engels cost about a third of Matt O’Riley and did reasonably well despite supporters not fully grasping what players cost, to try and replace. The same for Adam Idah who was signed as ‘back up’ to our first choice striker, where there is only one jersey because we play that system. We took a chance and didn’t replace the first choice in January. 20 goals including 2 at Villa in the CL, is a fair return for a first season, wonder how many young strikers we’ve signed did that in their debut season? I still think we’ll sign a first choice striker in summer

We win a double last year against a weaker rangers who were in a chaotic state and generally a poorer level of competition. We were not close to Ange years team in good football terms or achievement.

Not surprisingly I disagree, yes we ran out of steam after Munich, which wasn’t a surprise, but we still averaged 3 goals a game, won a double, and made progress in Europe, and regained some credibility as a seeded club in this year’s tournament. Celtic regularly beat original Rainjurz whilst in a ‘chaotic state ‘ like Sevco it didn’t do us much good

Sure the new format in CL and as easy a draw as we could have dreamed of had us all excited but the reality is we would have really disappointed had we not got to the last 24 given our fixtures.

Still with the easy draw patter…….. * sigh *

Loads on here are happy with what we have seen recently in recruitment and development. Personally, I am not impressed. I really fear for our direction of travel.

Direction of travel is poised at 11 available trophies from 13 hopefully you’ll be back behind the team, and in time for the next chapter of the CL, the revolving door transfer market becomes more crucial for every year for Celtic, the richer and stronger we become

  23. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

To repeat what I wrote a few weeks ago: we will be in trouble if Engels, Trusty and Idah do not improve exponentially; we lose Maeda and then sign more players like Engels, Trusty and Idah. Add the fact we couldn’t beat R2ngers over 90 minutes the last 4 times we played them, not to mention a number of abject performances (cup final, anyone?) and I have some concerns.

Of course these concerns may be totally (and hopefully) misplaced, but I find it difficult to put on my green tinted specs and pretend everything in the garden is rosy.
