Kieran’s niggles

151

Kieran Tierney:s injury, picked up while playing for Scotland against Iceland, has spooked some Celtic fans.  It shouldn’t.  The injury itself is apparently nothing significant. Footballers play with what are euphemistically called ‘knocks’ all the time. Few are ever 100% clear of some ailment.

Whatsmore, we should expect Kieran to be fit around 70% of the time. If he manages 80% across his time at Celtic, it would be an exceptional improvement.

Brendan will rest him for games he can afford to and play him when he has a ‘niggle’, another useful euphemism we use when we accept playing a footballer with an injury. This is football. We need to learn to accept it when it comes to Kieran and the rest of the squad.

KL- Engels is a right MF,give him a run there, always getting shuttled about, centre, left….

  2. I see Raskin makes the bench for Belgium. Our £11m man nowhere to be seen.

Ah but our manager is all about signing top potential and developing players ?

  3. !!Bada Bing!! on

Let’s bring back Lawwell and Hardy to scout players, or have Man Cityor PSG snapped up the dynamic duo? Probably stilton Gardening Leave, usual Tag Team of B78 and P67 kicking the manager for everything and anything ,obviously money at the root of this

  4. engels is 21, raskin is 24.

arne played in 54 matches scoring 10 goalswith 13 assists, including 10 games in champions league. with 1 goal and 3 assists.

raskin played 48 times for the huns, scored 5 goals had 11 assists, he has never played in the champions leage

by any metric he is pishier than arne.

starange choice to pick for the belgian manager.

Somebody will post they don’t see the point in selling Daniel Cummings and buying Calum Osmand.

    ————

Both players have very similar profiles, but one is Welsh and one is Scottish.

Time will tell, but we need to give young players game time and opportunity.

So given time I will come back to you.

    HH.

    ——————-

I would have picked you to post that :-) you’ve sussed the distinction, nationality Welsh or Scottish doesn’t matter though, it’s just different Football Associations that define the CL rules.

Celtic have always valued English B team goals higher than Scottish Lowland league goals? ( see Moussa Dembele ) If you can come up with how we give young players more game time, you’ll catch the interest of Celtic, never mind the supporters. We’ve agreements from Austria to Queen’s Park, aren’t shy in trying to develop players outwith Lennoxtown.

The gap between ‘late teens’ development and multi million pound players is there, and always has been at least since Fergus McCann, it’s just that we’re wealthier now and can join in properly in the modern transfer market. I don’t think that’s detrimental in developing players, and see it ( not by you ) as just another stick with which to beat Celtic.

    To be clear

Celtic no longer have a smart player trading model.

    Stop fooling yourself.

We had this for a few years. We have a guy recruited from lower leagues in England who Brendan trusts and we hope agents offer us a few decent options. Our rivals now have a structure for a player trading model in development.

    =================================

What exactly is your direction of travel B78.

Who exactly are you trying to fool?

Matt o Riley rubbishes your view and his sale was last year.

Brendan signalled a change in transfer policy last year with buys likd Engels and Idah,£10m & £8m,upscaling to model so hopefully a bigger return will come in the longer term.

    But here is the thing

1.You do not and never have liked Brendan on his return

2 You have zero to say the monies available to our manager from our board.

    .

At every chance you demean the team behind our transfers,as i said previously not a word from you when anonymous and unknown player where turning up without our managers.

In truth the so called player trading model only came to fruition under the coaching ability of Brendan, picking fruit from the scatter gun of signings/lone deals we made aplenty of.

It is evident you dont like Brendan,me,i hope he signs an extension,we differ B78 thankfully, whatever his future Celtic are a better club for having him about.

Ps put some of that negative/untrusting vibe you give towards Celtic and start asking bout and canvassing support to enable our youth to play in a competitive reserve/youth system

Brendan said 3 months ago, the squad needed an overhaul, if he’s supported, I have no doubts we will be stronger next season

  9. Raskin has showed up better than Arne in the big games recently. No surprise given his age but Belgium have been on a poor run of form abd the manager needs results so it’s not a surprise he’d go with a player in better form than one who’ll go on to be the better player

Genuinely believe that Belgium have been influenced by Philipe Clement in the meteoric rise of Raskin, aided and abetted by SMSM Sevco are ‘bracing themselves for a £20M bid. They even tried to tempt England bosses to the Dome, to check out Jack Butland, fortunately they did.

  12. The reason there is no Reserve League is because David Murray wanted it dismantled, as Celtic reserves were on the verge of winning 9, or was it 10 in a row?

And our kowtowing board put up zero resistance to DM’s demands.

    Same as it ever was.

Relative to their price tags, Engles, Trusty and Idah have been little different to Oh and Yang – underwhelming and inconsistent.

All this Engels/Idah have no control over their price tag is gaslighting nonsense of the highest order. They don’t, but it misses the point – someone at Celtic thought we should pay £11m and £9m respectively for them.

Be honest, if you were told this time last year we would sign a midfielder for £11m and a striker for £9m what would you have expected from them?

I’m sure it’s a lot more than underwhelming and inconsistent.

It’s a great pity anyone who dares play Devils Advocate or raises even the slightest conjecture about the manager’s performance is met with whataboutery or worse.

It’s a fab list Chairbhoy, but like many you miss the point- it’s about the here and now.

The squad needs a significant refresh and the guy who has a year left on his contract and spent £26m on Engels, Idah and Trusty is in charge of it.

It genuinely boggles my mind how none can see the risk here.

Chairbhoy – I’ll ignore your sarcasm, but at the risk of repeating myself the risk is Engels, Trusty and Idah do not improve exponentially; we lose Maeda and we sign players who turn in performances like Engels, Trusty and Idah turned in last season.

Here’s what gets my goat- I hope it doesn’t happen, it’s not what I’d say is my central case scenario, but it’s an outcome that I think has a reasonable (subjective) probability (30-40%) based on what I’ve seen so far.

If it’s all gone pear shaped by Christmas, it’ll be folk like who’ll be howling from the rooftops for the manager’s head.
