Kilmarnock 0-6 Celtic

1028

The Scottish Premier League title was secured in emphatic fashion at Kilmarnock this afternoon as The Champions recorded the highest winning margin by any team in the league this season before celebrating an unforgettable league title.

There were sterling performances all over the field for Celtic but it was Charlie Mulgrew who made it his business that there would be no mistakes today.  He scored two and created another two of Celtic’s opening four goals before a late flurry finished the scoring.

The opening goal was a bullet header from Charlie from a Kris Commons corner with less than 7 minutes on the clock.  Mulgrew could have added a second three minutes later when he combined with Commons on the edge of the area before trying to clip the ball past Cammy Bell in the Kilmarnock goal but on this occasion his attempt went wide.

Glenn Loovens made it 0-2 after 15 minutes when a short corner was played across the field to Mulgrew on the right.  Charlier swung in a deep cross to the back of the six yard box for Loovens to of back across goal and into the net.

On 35 minutes Mulgrew cut inside from the left wing and opened space for a delicious right foot shot inside the far post to put Celtic 0-3 ahead and in dreamland.

Moments later Adam Matthews crossed to the dangerous Commons who could have turned and shot but played the ball into the past of Georgios Samaras who drew a magnificent save from Bell.

Seconds before half time Mulgrew sent in a mirror copy of his earlier cross for Loovens but this time Gary Hooper raced onto the ball at the back post to fire into the net and give Celtic a four goal lead at half time.

Commons, who played as a false centre forward for most of the game to great effect, should have earned a penalty on the hour mark when he was barged off the ball when clean thought inside the box but his distinct hooped shirt counted against him.

Kris then played a magnificent pass onto the rampaging Loovens who injured himself in a challenge with Cammy Bell as his shot went narrowly wide.

The second half looked set to end without a goal before a couple of late contributions, the first from Ledley who combined with Stokes before clipping the ball over the goalkeeper.  Gary Hooper then fired an unstoppable shot into the postage stamp corner from 19 yards to complete the rout.

Have a Champion Easter and enjoy your well earned celebrations.

  1. That game was not televised here but I read comments on CQN and read headlines on Polish websites.

    Short comment is a must.

Congratulations on the title. It was well deserved one. Good news is that Neil Lennon has a lot of time for preparations to the games in Europe.

Who knows, maybe that is second after 2006 year that both Celtic Glasgow and my Legia Warsaw are the champions? My first team is on the good path.

Congratulations to all the board for sticking by the man during a time in which he endured unprecedented pressure in and out of the football world.

A great big thaks to the Scottish media for their part in rangers downfall. You guys played a blinder!

Never mind WATP, more like YNWTP (You Never Were The People), another myth emphatically disproved. :)))

A big thanks to Paul67 for being a great host and to him, Phil and RTC for fantastic work in providing the REAL balance to scottish football news stories – all of which has been proved to be on the money.

Come on Celtic!!! Let’s build on this and bring back those fantastic European nights. Looking forward to this team building into a legendary one. :)

What a wonderful feeling eh? And in so many different ways, for Neil Lennon and everything he has endured over the past two years, for our young team of lions – they will only get better- and for the support, whether in the stands, around the world or online. Our day has come.

    Have a great night.

  13. This is not a religous post but it is an emotional one.

Today we celebrate and quite properly too!

But I think also of those no longer with us and those with whom I have lost touch.

I think of my Dad who took me to my first match (against Third Lanark & my second: a probables v possibles pre-season trial. Do the old guys remember those?)

I remember also my Dads younger cousin telling me how years earlier Dad had taken him as a young boy, pre & immediate post war to games. This was told at my Dads funeral and sadly he would himself be dead within weeks although I didn’t realise at the time. I never knew this from my Dad. They were there when Charles Patrick Tully did his trick at Brokville!

I remember Margaret who took me to games when I was young. Margaret was half Dutch and a gem. I enjoyed the GREAT European nights with her. I was never grateful enough and I regret that.

I brought my own sons up in the tradition. My younger son was at Killie today, a baton has been handed on.

I am sorry if this sounds a bit morbid. I am not sad. In fact I am so happy. Please though remember the links you have – I will never forget.

I literally still have the scars from that game. Went to every match on that run and my name comes from the standing on the Kop watching the old LiNField Bald Eagle himself, who was nearly decapitated by a brick as he ran on, score for the Reds in the second minute

    Unbowed and Unbroken

Proud day for us all.. I had a lump in my throat when Lenny walked on to the pitch just after the final whistle blew. Neil Lennon is Priceless to our great club. The Majority of the Celtic Family Backed him to the hilt when his young team struggled to find consistency in the early part of the season, be proud of yourselves for believing in him because I bet he’s proud to his back bone of us… THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING… Stand as one with Neil Lennon unbowed and unbroken.. Party hard and stay safe.

    You are right.

For a while, in particular under Mowbray and Gordon Strachan I feared the club was losing that tangible link to the past.

Watching Neil Lennon’s passion and empathy today, laid that fear firmly to rest.
