Kilmarnock 2-2 Celtic

335

You know what happens when you fail to defend properly, so watching Celtic be punished for Izzie failing to stop a cross, Efe allowing a man to cut in front of him, and Izzie getting into a mess, allowing his man to get behind him and run into the box, will not be a surprise. Defend like that and you don’t deserve any more from the game.

There was a vastly more interesting aspect on display.

Commons invention for Griffiths’ 2nd minute goal was a treat, four minutes later Commons shot forced MacDonald into a save. Then on 8 minutes Rogic forced a save and 60 seconds later Griffiths shot from distance was saved. On 11 minutes Forrest’s shot was saved and on 17 minutes another Commons shot was saved.

In making that last shot, Commons grimaced in pain and that was that. Celtic didn’t have another shot on target until Nir Bitton’s spectacular goal. Kris retired to the bench soon after that grimace to pack ice on his thigh, and Celtic’s game fell apart.

What price that Malmo manager, Age Hereide, underlined the words Stop Commons in his notebook?

The remainder of the game was a lottery. We should have won, on the balance of chances, but we weren’t good enough to make sure. When Kris Commons gets that ice off, Ronny had better replace it with cotton wool.

Nice Panenka from Higginbotham.

Common’s grimace didn’t bode well for his playing against Malmo. Anyway, I still have ma doots that he can be as effective in Europe as against the likes of Kilmarnock. We still had plenty of opportunities to win the game after he went off but we didn’t. I am not still not sure why. The vagaries of football?

Qin the cold light of day, I still blame the dry, slow pitch as the major cause of our erratic performance.

  7. James Forrest was outstanding last night, and given absolutley zero protection from the ref. On one of his runs 3 seperate hammer throwers had lunges at him.

James Forrest’s performance was THE highlight of last night. Let’s hope we see a lot more of his ability. As for the ref, we play in Scotland. What’s new?

  15. Morning everyone. Overall i’m not too worried about last night, despite a disjointed performance we could and should have won it very comfortably. It did seem strange to rest Boyata when he’s only had a couple of games to bed in next to Virgil. My heart doesn’t always sink if Efe is starting but it does if it’s at centre half! Izzy switched off for half a second at the end and it cost us. Hoping that’s a momentary blip as it seemed as if he had started this season much sharper than the previous couple of years.

2 mins of added time was a farce i couldn’t believe that. I was worried when Nir came off at the end – it made no sense tactically in a game we’re seeing out. The message it sent was “we’ve won this so we’re giving people a run out”. Considering we’d conceded cheaply at the end of the first half we should have killed it off better than we did.

If we were going to have a wake up call then it’s probably the perfect timing. One more game to set things straight against ICT before the big test next week. Happy for Malmo’s coach to go home rubbing his hands. The more confident they get, the more they chat, the better for us.

  18. Had to suffer Radio Scotland last night so did not see the game only heard the action via Liam McLeod, Craig Paterson and Mark Wilson.

In the first 10 mins they were amazed we hadn;t scored again. By 20 mins they were saying it should be at least 5. Now in all honesty that is an exageration I don;t think I have been to many games if any at any level of football and seen 5 goals in 20 mins but I got the impression we were well on top.

Game Changer – Commons goes off. Now I know Paul67 has highlighted very recently in his articles about Kris Commons and in all honesty I can see why although I didn;t see it last night if you get my drift but I could hear the difference. Killie weren’t in the match and then al of a sudden they were. Commons is the link man. He scares teams. He has that bit of quality on the ball and also he has the confidence. The main attribute Kris has is he is a goal scorer but he also creates goals, provides us with an out ball by controlling the ball and winning free kicks. He is a clever, experienced footballer who every team in Scotland would take without being asked twice. He went off and we brought on GMS who I never heard mentioned in the first half at all and briefly in the 2nd. Wingers and forwards are about confidence. They must get a run of games. If you buy a striker or winger and dip him in and out the team he will not get settled into the team pattern or gel with his team mates and he will look out of place. We have done this for years expecting to buy a striker throw him in a few times and expect him to be a world beater and then discard him as a dud. GMS had an off night. It can happen. Wingers will lose form or just meet a full back that has them sussed. Much as Hammil is a horrible style of player he is a tough opponent and his experience had wee GMS nullified. Not one to sub a sub but maybe he should have been removed to allow Stokes a farewell run and quite possibly a goal at a ground he has form at. Alas wasn;t to be and maybe my sentiment is getting in the way of my thought process. James Forrest on the other hand was proving what confidence can do in a positive way. Most of us have been looking forward to seeing him fully fit and I pray the wee man can stay fit for a couple of months and really show us what we have been missing because when he is on form he is a very dangerous player for us and can be vital in Europe with his pace.

I’m confused about the 1 up top situation I know it is Ronny’s way. I know he won;t change it. I know the team is set up so that everyone knows their place and can slot in BUT It’s not been working has it? Someone alluded to it earlier. We have scored a maximum of 2 goals this season in the few games we have played apart from the game we played against the Icelandic part timers when they were stretched and tired.

Ronny is rolling the dice regarding his left back, striker(s) and possible playmaker. He is gambling on CL qualification. The budget he will have CL v EL will be much different. What we have at the minute in the forward areas is Leigh Griffiths. Yep that’s yer whack in SPFL games. Ronny has left himself short. Ciftci is suspended and he was always going to be. Derk is so far out the picture he probably hasn;t tried the New balance kit on yet. Scepovic – see Derk. Stokes is surplus to requirements and is on the verge of being sold but we are not using him. Curious pressure to put yourself under but this is what Ronny has put himself with because I believe he has his targets indentified and is cutting the wage bill and letting players know they are going. In this situation you must expect us to struggle a bit up front. We don;t have many options and wee Leigh is working hard but frankly the support is not great at times. Johanssen must do better and seems a bit off the boil compared to last season.

Got to be brutally honest this Killie side got humped off Dundee at home and we should be beating them even with half a reserve team out.

In the long term it’s not a disaster but for some players it’s a wake up call.

These teams are sticky. Sometimes you have to play them like for like. You need to rattle them and go at them. Rogic and Biton are too similar for me. I wouldn;t play them both away from home – just a personal view.

If you chop and change your back 4 too much you will lose goals. Teams that stick with the same CB pairing will always do better. I have backed Efe for a long time and always will. I feel for him getting thrown in here and there and then taking the flak.

A draw is not a disaster for the season but I just hope we get it right against Malmo and get the cheque book out and get it sorted for both domestic and European football.

    No panic just thoughts.

By the way listening to the game on the radio is painful!

  19. Rare football comment from ole Jobo…

I enjoyed watching last night’s game much more than I did on Sunday. Probably because I’ve always been a ‘performance’ over ‘results’ type of guy. Slightly disappointed that our 100% domestic record (both in terms of points and goals conceded) was lost but certainly not disheartened. Particularly encouraged by Janko, Bitton and Forrest all of whom I thought performed well.

Absolutely no qualms from me over the penalty. and given that it was for an 87th minute equaliser how cool was the penalty taker – cap doffed as they say round these parts.

We should have won. We didn’t. LIfe goes on.

Why is this unlucky loss of two points to a Killie team we outplayed, any more significant than last year’s away defeat to ICT in August or our draw with Well in September or our home defeat by Hamilton in October?

All I remember is a more inept performance and a more justified loss of points in those 3 matches.

The usual sign of a team or club in decline is a deterioration in the level of play, not a dominant attacking performance with defensive frailties.

In short, good teams create chances and drop points by not making enough of them. Poor teams drop points by creating nothing.

Neither of us have seen anything like last year’s inept performances and we have not seen them from Ronny’s Celtic since last Autumn.

The one thing I will agree with is that one day we will lose a league; that is inevitable. We had a good competitive run from the Dons last year and we will get a good run from them again plus, maybe, Hearts.

Neither of us, using our heads, would bet against Celtic with any confidence though.

  22. Nir Bitton limped off when subbed. So he had to be taken off.

The ref should have shown 3 yellow cards in the 1st half. His failure to do so encouraged their hammer throwers.

Griff was off the boil tonight; he will be better more often than not.

Rogic showed some excellent touches. He is a good player.

Efe was at fault for their 1st goal as was VVD and Johansen.

We will play worse and win matches this season.

We will beat Malmo and qualify for CL Group Stage.

Don’t panic and pay no heed to the negatonians.

    COYBIG

  23. Post this now & not in hindsight – We have a £10mil + Asset in VVD & everyone knew this well before the end of last season. This makes our failure to speculate 5 or 6 mil on much needed creative talent to help towards CPL qualification & a £20mil windfall extremely short sighted. I mean what’s the worst that could have happened? Still fail to qualify for the CPL, sell VVD, make £4mil, plus Europa League football with some new talent to enjoy. Hopefully we still have enough to qualify but if we don’t, then it’s not the players or management who should be blamed. Of course we can beat Malmo with what we have but not for the first time, I can’t help but feel short changed by our short sighted club.

P67, this obsession with commons is bordering on stalking. How many articles is that now? Always a subtext. Commons is good but he isn’t Paul McStay or Scott Brown for that matter. Commons scuffed a shot that caused his dead leg when he could have passed. I presume he mind controlled the others into shooting as well. Rigic missed an open goal from 3 yards. Nice to see that we have some fringe players that look a bit more convincing than some we have had before when the important players are missing.

Ambrose oot and Izzy as you say no surprise.

A disgrace If we don’t sign a striker.

  25. Morning all.

I had a blast in London and have to say was sorry to leave.

Last night’s game. Delighted for James, every fair minded person knows he has that in his locker, now for a bit of consistency please James.

As for the result, these things happen, we should have won but didn’t, Mason Allen didn’t give any protection to our players and with Killie not watering the astrograss, I suspect we will have a good few players nursing knocks. Expect more changes for Saturday.

Thoughts on two players. GMS has to produce more on a game to game basis but like James he has the ability to do so. Rogic has to be quicker and more clever in his decision making. He might come good yet though, as at the moment he reminds me of Nir in his early days at Celtic. Tom has to improve, hopefully like Nir he will.

Have read back on last night’s comments and i see more and more people are catching on to rudicantfail and him being a troll.

    “‘GG:

Respectfully suggest that the vast majority of blog participants have no intention to undermine the Celtic support. In my humble opinion, many reflect on errors that are oft repeated, or player skill deficiencies that are not apparently addressed by coaching staff or management.”

There is some truth in what you say. The vast majority of posters on this site are genuine Celtic fans with no desire to hurt the club but, it is also undoubtedly true that the majority of postings commenting on the games on CQN are negative. We do not behave like supportive fans in our statements here and we are more likely to ape a Craig Burley style of game punditry than to cheer the team on. It is also true that a draw or defeat will produce more late match or post-match criticism than will a win , which is treated as routine or expected unless it is against a “big” team or is a crucial qualifier or is a major Cup match or win against close league rivals. In common with most news media, negative news breeds more interest than positive or Misery likes company.

“Most would rather laud the team to the heavens than criticise the team, manager, tactics or substitutions. Who would not?”

Maybe, when in attendance at matches, most would prefer to laud but there is abolutely no evidential support in favour of this contention in regard to CQN (or any other Celtic fan site) match day comment. The average internet commentator, whether on football or politics or music, is more sclerotic, scathing and scurrilous than real life fans. We exaggerate the extent of our own ability to do things better (anyone could manage Celtic better) and we use weasel words like “apparently” to give us the freedom to present our musings as authoritative when they really only see (or hear), at best, 90 minutes of evidence of player ability or commitment compared to the 40 hours per week that the coaches see. As for “who would not?”, have you ever noticed the frequency of your CQN tendency to comment on occasions where points have been dropped and contrast that with your lack of comment when we have won? And you are far from alone in that tendency, so I am not indulging in personal point scoring. If some posters would prefer to laud the team, they hide that tendency suspiciously well.

” Unfortunately, we are in a position where there is ample room for criticism. No criticism results in zero improvements, and anyone who watched today’s game knows full well that improvements are desperately required.”

We have always been in a position with ample room for improvement. Even in the heady days of the Lions 66 to 74, Jock was restless to replace and improve but, ultimately, he and Celtic failed. As for “desperately required”??, What is the source of the desperation? What is different about the challenges of this year as opposed to last or next? Celtic will want to improve and Ronny Deila will be restless in his desire to improve but I would not want anyone who contemplates desperation anywhere near improving things.

I fully expect CQN match day reporting to continue to be “O me Miserum” when points are being dropped or performances are not dominant, and I expect it to be, mostly “So what?” when we win. That is the internet fan persona I see most often.

I often wonder if people get as much joy out of supporting Celtic as I do or whether we are exclusively grumpy old men.

  29. Maidín mhaith.

The most disappointing thing about last night was not the dropping of points, the sloppy finishing or woeful defending.

    Árd Matha,

    Fair point.

If anyone has the game recorded, I think it would be interesting to watch, at least a part of it, and see how poorly the ball ran over the surface.

This caused passes to be under hit and, in Griffith’s case, caused him to mistime his snapshot from the cutback.

Like Stjarnan, Killie deliberately didn’t water the pitch, which, apparently, is a prerequisite for AstroTurf.

Boyata was missing because Ronny reckoned that he hadn’t played many games over the last few years, therefore hasn’t built up the stamina necessary for repeated games.

It’s similar to young players making the breakthrough, they have to be nursed towards first team match fitness.
