Kilmarnock 3-3 Celtic

1194

Celtic frittered away another two points at Kilmarnock this afternoon after a performance which ultimately showed depths of determination but was marked by shockingly bad organisation.

Kilmarnock’s opener in 25 minutes could not have been simpler.  An 80 yard high ball was collected on the edge of the Celtic penalty area by Heffernan, who turned and picked out the onrushing Dean Sheils, who was initially being marked by Beram Kayal but the Israeli failed to match Sheils run, allowing the Killie player time to pick his spot and score.

The home team were encouraged by the opening goal and continued to press forward.  Fraser Forster did well to turn over a blistering shot from Kelly which was destined for the top corner.  Kilmarnock’s pressure was rewarded on 40 minutes when Kayal and James Forrest stood off a ball conceding possession.  Sheils crossed for the offside Heffernan to score but the assistant referee didn’t flag so the goal stood.

Seconds before half time Charlie Mulgrew was short with a back pass and James Fowler chipped Forster to give Killie and three goal half time lead.

The first 28 minutes of the second half were miserable for Celtic as the team appeared resigned to a fate similar to the Celtic team which visited St Mirren Park in March 2010 but Anthony Stokes had other ideas.  Stokes missed what was surely the worst chance of his career early in the first half when the scores were still level, and saw a good penalty claim denied on 71 minutes, but instead of hiding he stepped forward.

James Forrest, who also stood up to be counted throughout, ran at the Killie midfield and was fouled 25 yards out.  Stokes struck the resultant free kick perfectly into the top left corner.

Two minutes later Stokes collected the ball from Ki 28 yards from goal in what seemed like a safe position but his swift turn and inch-perfect shot beat Jaakkola in the Kilmarnock goal.

Kilmarnock were now rattled and Celtic were level on 79 minutes.  Daniel Majstorovic got on the end of a long free kick at the back post and squared for Charlie Mulgrew who headed home.

Having scored three times within seven minutes and with over 10 minutes of the game remaining the Celtic support had reason to feel confident their team could collect all the points but it was Kilmarnock would should have tied up the win in the final minutes when Heffernan found himself unmarked inside the Celtic six yard box but headed over, however, the home team will be happy to have collected their first point in four games.

    Kojo,

See James Forrest post, it explains it a lot better than i ever could.

There are a lot of rumours flying around, i have heard a few from various people, in my view too much smoke without fire.

For circumstantial evidence for me the Bangura signing sums it up, my view (and its only mine) Neil wanted Diawarra but was handed Bangura.

Hope you are well anyway, and howz Vegas these days?

What is even funnier is that some of big Fraser’s critics are regularly singing the praises of McGregor.

I’ve never been one for believing a player is rubbish just because he plays for the Huns. I think McGregor is a great shot-stopper, but he is rubbish with crosses and more importantly he concedes soft goals on a regular basis. Not only does he escape any scrutiny for his errors (like the first goal against Spain on Tuesday or our second goal at Ibrox) but every save he makes is eulogised by the media.

Our big Geordie makes fewer mistakes that McGregor and gets nothing but stick.

I believe Neil Lennon to be a man who loves Celtic, a man who was given a chance to be manager at a time when we needed his passion and his commitment, a time when he knew he could bring to the club what was missing from it.

I believe Neil Lennon took that job knowing there were conditions being imposed on him that more experienced men would not have accepted.

I believe after last season, when he gave everything we could have asked, more than we would ever have dared to ask, he believed those restrictions would be loosened and his loyalty would have been rewarded with the same level of commitment.

I do not believe those things have happened. I believe Lenny is not happy about that but carries on out of a mixture of love for Celtic, fear of how it would be spun if he walked (i.e. that the scum who targeted him last year would be seen to have won) and partly because he believes this is the one chance he will have to manage the club he loves and does not want to let it go.

I believe he is not fully in charge of his own destiny. I believe his hands have been tied. I believe he was used as a human shield at the AGM by men not half the man he is.

Puppet on a string implies that he is run from above, so perhaps that is not the right phrase. But I do not believe he runs his own ship, that he is in charge to the extent he needs to be. This is his career which is at threat. He is a smart man and not oblivous to the problems we have on the pitch, and he knows he will stand or fall on his ability to sort them out. If a numpty like me can see those problems a man like him can see them too. I either believe he is blind and/or stupid or that his judgement has not been backed.

IMO and what you have admitted to, you are no Celtic supporter or fan. You made a decision to withdraw your support, you are not a supporter, merely an observer.

I do not necessarily believe you need to financially contribute to Celtic to be a supporter, people have different and sometime difficult financial circumstances which make it difficult, they are still supporters – YOU are not.

I don’t have a problem with you, I have a problem with you being selective in what you want to believe.

More enlightened people than us on here are saying the same thing re PL, why ? they want what’s best for our club, they realise what is going on, they are on the inside so to speak.

Are Phil and Matt liars ?

As for GS and TM, confidentiallity agreements are standard practice, in all the time football has been happening, there will be a handfull at most who have evey spoken out against the club they have left, most would never work again if they did.

You won’t believe that cos it doesn’t fit in with your thinking, you have mentioned it again today asking why they don’t speak out, cos they want to work is a good enough reason.

  8. all this talk of pl interfering in transfers is stupid and if lenny is just putting up with shite from pl to keep his pay then my respect for him is less than before, bottom line is the manager lives or dies by his decision, if it was me, i’d be fighting my corner not simply accepting, and if i was unhappy i’d be looking to get myself a new job, as i have in the past.

lenny cant hide behind pl signing players, do you thimk MON would, did wim janson?

Don’t dare. Don’t even DARE sit on the other side of the Atlantic and say what you just have. You do not live here, on the ground, in the mire, and see what goes on here. You don’t live in the cesspit of Scottish society, where that man’s very life was on the line, where the solidarity he was shown by hundreds of thousands of us has not wavered, even today.

I still have at the end of my name “is Neil Lennon.” Lennon, the man. A man who’s character is without question. A bigger man than the small men who hide behind him, than the lesser men who appropriate his name on a daily basis to excuse the inexcusable.

I may have issues with his tactics and his team selection. I may have issues with some of the decisions he has made. And I may believe he operates under restrictions, knowingly and willingly, but I understand and sympathise with the reasons why he does it and would never question his character.

Who the Hell are YOU to tell me what I mean? Do not dare accuse me of questioning that man’s character. Neil Lennon’s character is without blemish, his courage with equal, his love for Celtic without doubt.

You are the one who’s casual racism and narrow views have character issues.

That’s the last time I respond to one of your posts. Life’s too short to waste on people like you.

  15. Fine article JForrest, shamateurs the whole lot of them.

The Board, aye the board. It´s a sham because Academic John Reid, who came to the fore on the back of support from the voters of the Labour Party is totally miscast as the Chairman of a sporting-business entity, aka Celtic Football Club. Apart from anything else, after the title win at Tannadice, our results have been shocking and the gate attendances way down.

As many of us know hee haw about business, although there are many illuminated economic sages who grace this site and enlighten us, many of us were taken in by the flying kite about Arsenal wanting our chief executive. We can now see with hindsight that his transfer dealings have been underwhelming in the extreme.

And then we come to the man who holds the aces at the top table, whom Neil Lennon, again dreadfully miscast in the role, defended publicly at the annual general meeting for shareholders. Just who does the casting at Celtic Park?

Dermot Desmond is a businessman, however for some reason he has no interest in running Celtic. If he doesn’t want to do it, can he take the late, great Hank Williams’ advice and “Move it on over”, we need more motivation.

I have better expectations of our new chairman. He sounds like a nice middle class chap, just right for the role. Quinn was also pretty absent in his role so are we going to see any impetus and momentum generated by a chairman for a change?

Kojo is also right when he says the buck stops at the players, but when a manager consistently cannot get the best out of a set of players at a club like Celtic and does not offer attractive football then he is responsible too.

  16. gebhoy is the taxmans tick tocking clock, tick...tock on

    Mick,

i think time will tell with Bangura, i already think he is being written off by some of the support, from what i have seen of him, i think he could be a player he has pace and his touch isnt that bad (yesterday apart).

If he dosent start scoring once he gets his chance i think he may go the same way as jaurez and Hoiveld. Neil has to be seen as giving the boy a chance and as i say he has not had that chance yet.

Bangura deserves our support 100% whether Neil signed him or not.

People who boast about not giving Celtic a penny since Strachan are beneath contempt in my opinion.

You can no longer call yourself a Celtic supporter with an attitude like that.

The board and the fans have always been at odds. Even in the good times they kept the biscuit tin tightly closed.

Get a grip, being a Celtic supporter means being faithful through and through. Supporting Celtic has always been about more than following a winning team. It’s as much about celebrating a culture – Out of famine and Oppression … And all that.

In my humble opinion somebody that supports an individual, club, organisation does so by an action e.g. financially or in this case by giving the team and Neil vocal support at a game.

If somebody does not do an action by refusing to do so because they do not want to that is their decision.

In the interests of avoiding any misunderstandings here, he’s not the only one who took that decision.

I took it myself, and I hold to it. I will not set foot inside Celtic Park until a certain someone has gone.

There was a couple of years there where I didn’t have the financial wherewithal to follow the team by going every week. Then there was a job situation which made it impossible, because of shift patterns. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say it coalesed, over time, into a consicous decision.

For the first time in years, this season started with me having both the time and the money to buy a season ticket and to be there every single week. I chose to wait and see what the strategy was, and in light of what I saw I decided not to bother.

You are damaging the club and putting additional pressure on the budget provided by supporters, the people who do support our club. Back then that was the only option open to us to effect change, that is 100% not the case now, in fact what you’re doing has the opposite effect.
