Tonight I am standing on the shoulders of many giants – not least my uncle Alex Kennedy who took me to Paradise when I was four in’62 and my Dad who encouraged me over the year plus the old guard who founded the Greenock CSC and I was privileged to travel with in my younger years – god bless you one and all – cc Tiny Tim

A few people talking about loved ones who have passed and how these moments remind us of them. If I can be so cheeky to post an article I wrote for the CQN magazine around this.

Feel free to scroll by –

I’ve been thinking about mortality recently. You see I had a missed call from my Dad, Gerry Majella Hart (hence my blog name Majestic Hartson – see what i did there?), recently and so called him back. I was struggling to make sense from him as he was watching the St Johnstone game but in between his “oohs”, “ahs” and “cricky jings” i managed to make out what appeared to be “I collapsed….Thursday…..doctor said it may have been a mini stroke….shoot!”

Hold on mini stroke? I was expecting the phone call to have been an offer of a spare ticket or him saying my mum had been using his phone to get a hold of me, but not this. With this one call the seemingly solidity of life starts to cruelly melt away.

So i’ve been thinking about mortality – which makes a change from the morality questions that our neighbours have being throwing up of late but i digress – and in particular my old man’s. This brought all the usual questions to run through my head. You know the sorts, “will my mum be okay?”, “will my sister’s be okay?” – i always assume my big brother will be, who knows “will i be okay?” Then i asked myself “how will i remember him?”.

And you know, like many of you who have been lucky enough to spend a lot of time with your Dad going to games, most of the memories that I have of him revolve around Celtic.

This is not a bad thing, nor a sign of poor parenting – far from it in my eyes, we have a great relationship – this is just the way things are. Our relationship is entwined with all things Celtic. From him lifting me over in the old Rangers end as a young boy, to watching the Kilmarnock game together with my brother and cousins last weekend. It has always been this way.

Now of course i remember things like him taking me to the Burrell collection after football training and me throwing a strop because i didn’t want to go. Or him buying me a couple of cans when i was too young to be buying them myself. But that’s not how i really know him. That’s not how i will remember him.

I’ll remember him from getting me a ticket for the scottish cup final in 85 even though he wasn’t sure if it was from a legitimate source… The time i got lost at Fir Park and had to go to the police office as they put an announcement out for him – the photo in my album with the policeman’s hat on won’t let me forget… The away leg in Stuttgart in the UEFA cup run – a couple of the best nights i’ve ever had. The drive to Seville and back for the final with all my family, less my mother, and some cousins – more fun than many people will ever experience. The flight back to Seville and subsequent drive home with his by now fixed car that broke down on the way into Madrid on the way to the game.

The various trips to different pubs or cousin’s house or towns to watch or even listen to a Celtic game will be remembered. As will the times we’ve got emotional over some result or song being sung…..the list of memories goes on and on.

And so I’ve been thinking about mortality and once you start thinking about it you notice how many other people are thinking about it too. How many times have you heard people reminisce about going to games with their old man or how they wish their father was around to see Rangers in decline or how their Dad was at this game or saw that player? Each and every one keeping their family heritage alive, keeping their forefathers flames burning.

I’ve even come to notice various reminders of our mortality more and more around our club at every game where we still sing of McGrory, Johnstone, Tully, Murdoch and more. You may sit in the Jock Stein stand or walk past the statues we have erected outside the main stand. We have the Celtic Graves Society doing sterling work tending the final resting places of those who have made our great club what it is today. For heaven sake, we even built our stadium across the road from a cemetery, it is impossible to ignore. We even have the personalised bricks where my late Grandpa appears alongside my Dad, brother Joe and myself and other family members.

As a support we certainly know our history and we celebrate it as well we should. We don’t let these people nor their memories fade, that is not our way and it is not mine.

I have come to realise that when the horrible yet utterly unavoidable day comes to pass, when my Dad does eventually hang up his boots and makes his final trip to Paradise, so long as there is still Celtic I know we will still have each other and Celtic will always have us.

As Bill Shankly may have said to him, “Gerry you’re immortal now”.

    ———

He passed away on St Patrick’s day 8 years ago and he’s been on my mind a lot in the run and would have a big grin on his face – and probably a whisky in hand.

  12. the long wait is over on

I know I probably say this anytime we win a league championship but this really does feel special.

I probably had more doubt during this season than I have had for a long time ( other than 2020-2021 which was just a train smash ) but here we are – Champions again!

Wow – thank you Brendan and the players !

Tough season that has seen some bhoys become men.

When we win the League I always think back on the lean years when the original rangers dominated ( through naked financial cheating) and am instantly grateful for our success.

Well done Brendan Rodgers, it took balls to come back. Given the finances I firmly believe he is the man to achieve great things.

Special shout out to our Captain. In my opinion, his best season ever.

A night for remembering those bhoys and ghirls that have gone before us.

I’ll save the celebrations until Saturday but I am a smiley man tonight.

  24. Hi Bhoylo,

I’m still around, never felt better than I do right now.

Great to see you posting, Don’t be a stranger.

It was a tough League, we went through a sticky spell but we came through it, one of the sweetest Leagues since we stopped the 10 in a row.

The Football was magnificent tonight, every one of the team stood up to the task, how you can pick 3 for Jobo, I don’t know.

God Bless ye all here, Love ye all.

    @Mad i can’t wait till sat….Top post….

    you captured my whole season…….
