King demotivates ahead of semi

386

I suppose we should thank Dave King for starting the week of the Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Newco with a statement discussing the Newco manager’s position, “on the managerial front I emphasise that the board fully recognises the need for sustained stability in this area of the club.

“Whoever is appointed must be able to meet the unique challenges of managing Rangers [sic.] and ensuring immediate success.”

The last thing a manager wants ahead of a big game is discussions about his position from his chairman.  Poor Graeme is a lame duck and no one in his squad will be under any doubt about this after today.

Celtic got past 10-man Hamilton in a pedestrian manner yesterday, but must now up their pace ahead of the semi-final.  Last month we talked about the Morton Scottish Cup quarter-final being more important than the trip to Ibrox a week later.  By any measure, Sunday’s semi is one of the biggest games of the season.

A lack of concentration (as we saw yesterday) or a few mistakes and all the good work put into winning a consecutive treble will be undone.  We struggled against this lot at Celtic Park in December and needed heroics to beat them at Ibrox last month.  We have been unable to boss them the way we did last season, or in our visit to Ibrox in September.

In short, if you think we have a God given right to reach the final, you are wrong.  We should be grateful for any demotivational Dave King mutterins going.

The more seasons I’ve endured this split fiasco, the more I’m coming over to the idea of a 14-team league, split as you say.

Alternatively, back to a 10-team league, four games against each, with fixtures announced at the start of the season and cast in stone

Another thing about the current problem, the huns playing all of the other top six teams twice at home already. The SPFL have a policy of reversing fixtures year on year.

So unless one of the current six has a mare next year, the huns will play each team twice away prior to the split. Which will mean having to play two teams away from home for a third time.

I’ll bet something gets done about the shambolic set up when that scenario hits home.

  3. I mentioned before, but the split is a nonsense. Each team plays each other twice at home and twice away, simple.

What may work is increasing the SPL to 16 teams, playing twice, then reducing the other leagues to Championship and League one

The issue with a 16 team league, 30 games, is the loss of revenue to each team having 4 less home games (3 in some cases using the current unfair system).

Sundays game is now the biggest game of the season we are not playing with any fluency or pace meanwhile the mob at the otherside of the city are coming off the back of a 4-0 victory and should be high in confidence . Can The rangers beat Celtic well in my opinion not over a season but in football any team can beat another team over 90 minutes so two things are vitaly important Brendan must pick his best team and secondly they must play a high tempo pressing game and if they do I am confident of a Celtic victory but if Brendan messes with the team and they play at walking pace and continuely pass the ball backwords we could be in a whole lot of bother even the law of averages says they must win against us sometime so if you read this Brendan you have big choices to make lets hope you make the correct ones.H.H.

My view is that if the Police and the footballing authorities feel that this match is so dangerous then that is the way to solve the problem.

It was just a flippant, throw-away comment.

  8. The culmination of a season’s hard work is winning the title. Leaving the players aside for one moment. This is what fans pay significant amounts of dosh and spend endless amounts of time to witness.

Then we get various arms of the establishment trying to manipulate when we can actually achieve this.

The OB act may be on its way out , but it is obvious what they think of us.

Quite frankly it stinks on so many levels.

Your `flippant` scenario would certainly test the sincerity of those two bodies ! I believe they would be found lacking on that score and if that was your point , then I think it was a good one and well made.

    I like my huns over-confident,

We haven’t been great, but then again we haven’t needed to be. I think if we turn up, we win and, as previously said, this Celtic team has a habit of turning up for the occassion. However, agree that in a one off cup tie anything can, and usually does, happen when there is nothing to lose.

  11. JFH

I agree that any team can beat another over ninety minutes ( though Sevco are finding that particularly difficult against us !) but how do you account for the fact that we create so many chances playing with such a lack of fluency and pace?

Thank you. At the end of the day, what is it that they are worried about?

    – Celtic supporters acting ungraciously in victory and indulging in gratuitous gloating? Sorry folks, that’s sport, that’s life. Grown up and deal with it.

    – Sevco supporters taking defeat rather badly and going on a Scottish Cup style rampage? If the correct security provisions are in place then there shouldn’t be much to worry about.

    – Police being unable to police a large scale sporting event? If that’s the case then admit your shortcomings and ask that the game be played behind close doors.

  13. Hello gentleman,

and ladies too of course. Had a little sabbatical due to other commitments and a refusal to use the site on a mobile device.

I have to be honest I find the whole fixture debate utterly bizarre. I look at it from two perspectives, the authorities for example I cannot understand why they are getting their knickers in a twist. There was a very real possibility Celtic could have played Sevco in a cup final at 15:00 on a Saturday afternoon to seal a unprecedented double treble. If this scenario had arisen would they have cancelled the game?

And I’m also not sure why the media and supporters are getting their knickers in a twist either. Where have people got the idea that Celtic and Sevco must play each other the first game after the split? This has never been mandated anywhere so the idea that anyone is making it up to suit them is bollox. Since the split was introduced the match has been mostly played on this match day but not exclusively and there has never been anything stated in the laws or directives that say it should be. The only directive issued post 1999 was where possible avoid a league decider.

  19. James Morrison,West Brom,no thanks,we need Quality Players , added to the Squad, Morrison is a average player, and at Celtic we have to many average player’s already in the Squad, there is no excuses for not adding good quality footballer’s,at our club,we have plenty of money,so for God sake start spending it,if not then we expect answers ,as to why not,A Billionaire the main man, sometimes I have my doubts about him,he is never around the club,my hope is for next season,is a Real Celtic Man steps up to the plate, and I’m sure we would see big changes in and around the Stadium,

If the Police are that concerned about public disorder on the post split game, then why allow a 2:30 semifinal kick off allowing hours in the pub beforehand!!

  25. I like CQN and I like the fact that Social Media compensates somewhat for the shambles that goes under the guise of Football Journalism in the MSSM. From a Celtic perspective anyway, would the collective voice not be much more powerful if there was an amalgamation?

I sometimes think we are like Monty Python`s PPF/PlPF/Pla/PfOP or Para Handy`s MacClurites and Muscadale Dookers :-)

Would it not be the case that a One Celtic group would actually be able to exert meaningful pressure?

Another good point. What would hurt the Sevcoites more; us clinching a long expected title against them or them losing their last hope of honours, the Cup, this season?

A semi-final defeat after hours in the pub is not likely to be well received by some.

Had a look at the Glasgow Cup web-page and it shows our u17s completed their round-robin matches last week with a 4-0 win v Queen’s Park. Not noticed anything about it on the club site but with four wins and one draw from six games, the Celts qualify for the final as table toppers. A final win means five in a row.

Leading scorer is Scott Robertson, 5 goals and young Karamoko has 2 goals. Tournament sponsor, Willie Haughey’s City Refrigeration Ltd, comments on Sevco also making it into the final aren’t recorded.

  29. 2.30pm is a weird time for KO if you are worried about fan disorder.

On a personal note, it will allow me and my mates more time in pub before the game, to eh sample the atmosphere, and with a lot of fans taking time off on Monday to get a swally after game, it makes the Choice of Sunday for your premier semi final IMO a waste of time.
