King, financial recklessness and Celtic executive management

404

Let’s clear something up right away.  Every summer Celtic know they may not reach the Champions League group stage.  No matter how well they plan and recruit, they can come up against a better, or luckier, opponent.  Champions League football might not happen in any given season, or the following season.

Celtic failed to reach the group stage of the Champions League five times in the last nine seasons.  We might be getting better at qualification, but no one is making that assumption.

On 30 June last year, we had £24.5m in the bank.  That figure should be higher on the same reporting date this year.  We might not reach the Champions League group stage next season, but your football club has never been better prepared for a sporting reversal.

In a newspaper interview yesterday, Dave King compared Celtic’s current position with that of now-liquidated Rangers at the time Martin O’Neill came to Celtic.  In O’Neill’s first season at Celtic, Rangers competed in the Champions League group stage before dropping to the Uefa Cup.  But, on their 30 June 2001 reporting date, they had a bank balance of only £17,000.  Not enough to buy a family hatchback.

Rangers were gambling every penny they could get their hands on without thought for the consequences of a reversal.  It was a brutal period to be a Celtic fan, because although we were also losing money during at that time, the club was under siege from all sides for not ‘showing the ambition’ of the likes of David Murray and Dave King at Rangers.

Celtic know the perils of an over-dependence on Champions League revenues.  We do not budget on having to qualify for the group stage each season, far from it.  Our commercial sponsorship deals, retail and hotel plans, as well as player recruitment and development strategy, are all designed to mitigate an over-reliance on one source of income.  A £24.5m bank balance is evidence of a club planning on long-term stability.

We know what we will do in any season they don’t qualify for the Champions League in order to give us the best chance to do so the following season.  We know what to do to respond to any credible threat from another Scottish club for the domestic title.

We have experienced professionals in the boardroom and throughout all executive roles, and an actual billionaire who has put more money into Celtic than anyone has put into any Scottish football club – apart from the money the taxpayer wrote off due to the liquidation of Rangers while Dave King was paid to monitor and direct the club.

Celtic run scenarios on how things can go wrong.  They know the limits of what King and Newco can achieve and believe the biggest threat to Celtic’s dominance is for the executive to make strategically bad moves.  Rangers era of dominance was undone by financial recklessness, but in management terms, the problem was that the mechanisms did not exist to call the board to account on their gambling.

To combat this, Celtic have made sure that everyone at the club is challenged on their plans and performance, especially the chief executive.  If there is a strategically bad move made at Celtic, which could threaten their dominance in Scotland, it will have to get through multiple layers of scrutiny and opposition.  No one wants to be the next David Murray or Dave King.

Your football club might not be gamblers on the scale of Murray and King, but they are fiercely competitive and never want to lose another Scottish title.  That is what we plan for, and that is the reality that Dave King cannot come to terms with.

£6m from a share issue – and he didn’t even commit to that amount, even if the Takeover Panel are quickly satisfied on the overdue share offer!  And all that patter yesterday about delays in opening a bank account; why now transfer the money into your solicitor’s client account, like the rest of the world?

Why so many people put faith in this man “beggars belief”, to borrow a phrase.  From his “glib and shameless liar” title to the years of evidence laid out in plain sight.  You know how this story ends.

Ben Nevis Huddle is back!

After a three year gap, the Celtic fans will be back on Ben Nevis on mass on 30 June, to raise funds for your Foundation.  This is a great chance to climb Britain’s highest in the company of dozens of other Celtic fans.

Participants are asked to raise (only) £130 for the Foundation.  It is a great opportunity, see here for more details and to sign up.

    From last night.

You say that you can’t see what difference more education would make, your exact words were….

“ Cant see what difference more education would make.”

With respect I am astonished at that statement, we are where are today because of education, had we decided all those years ago that the back of the bus was our place and we would forever tug our forelock to the hun and his ilk we would never have risen to the heights we have, it may well take another few generations, but one day they will not have the control they enjoy today, it’s a long slow path but to give up now, to do away with bettering and educating ourselfs and our children beggers belief imo.

I am not just talking about the football, I am talking about society as a whole.

Education, you only have to take a look at NI for a stark example, when they filled the jails back in the day, the Republicans in the main educated themselfs and the loyalists pumped iron, had they not educated themselfs, the Catholics in the north may well still be third class citizens as opposed to second class ones and striving for parity.

For someone who is allegedly an ex-attendde of the Jungle your latest missive reeks of hypocrisy.

Don’t tell me that you were unaware of the cheating of the SFA and Huns in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s (when I will, for the sake of argument, assume you attended the games).

Don’t tell me that you were unaware of the cheating from the SFA and the Huns that went right back to the 1880s and 1890s.

Don’t tell me that you were unaware of the self aggrandisement of the Celtic Board during your attendance in the Jungle.

Don’t tell me you were unaware of that Celtic Board lining their own pockets – fanciful crowd figures and buckets of money.

You supported it then and allowed it to continue. What gives you the right to berate, ridicule and criticise Celtic Fans who don’t share your views today? What did you do back then? Nothing but attend the games I would guess. Only getting on the bandwagon when others said enough is enough.

It’s tedious; you never offer a different perspective or a realistic solution. You were content enough to be back of the bus back in the day. What’s changed now?

    Mahe…

My understanding of the pricing at games is this..

The original rangers increased the ticket prices after damage was done to their 5 star stadium by Celtic fans, Celtic then followed suit in a tit for tat row and increased our prices against them, until both clubs reached an agreement to pay for damage done at the others grounds, at the same time both boards agreed to set a figure and stick to it, now that agreement was with rangers RIP, I’m not sure if it still stands.

Most of the rest of your post I agree with except the boycott, that imho will only happen if someone at Celtic asked the fans to boycott, for many going to support Celtic is a ritual and one that wont be stopped by a few well meaning posts on a forum, or the kwap kev repeats daly from his goldfish bowl for that matter.

    Tet,

Long term education of course i agree . Thats how humans advance. Not what I was getting at though.

What that means is it doesnt matter if I have another few degrees or doctorates, to most in Scotland Im a fenian ba^%(^d regardless of how educated I am. We’ve never been smarter, and still with all the laws protecting us, better jobs, and all this education what difference does it make. Zip. Still swindled. Another generation of education wouldnt have helped one bit here. The board are very smart and they got out maneuvered. Do you see what I mean ? How honestly would education help us now ? Its not.

As for the north it was mindset that won out not education imo . The people were not for getting beaten,,because they were right. I dont think education had much to do with it tbh. Was the prisoners educating themselves an attempt to further themselves and their people in the main, or to allieve boredom, or to prepare for engaging in the normal society they aimed for I do not know nor would i speculate as I was not there beside them praise be. Maybe thats not what youre getting at.

You write “we are where are today because of education, ”

Were getting shafted right now and are at the back of the bus. Educated as hell we have just been swindled. Great lot of good it did. If you ask me fight ,heart and conviction is far more important than education right now.

Hope youre well. Busy but will check later. Hail Hail

Not sure where you even start with that ramble from King, although I am sure the intended audience will lap it up which is good for him I guess.

Celtic qualify for the Champions League group stages every two years on average. I don’t recall any packs of cards falling in the years we missed out.

Comparing any club to old Rangers (other than maybe Leeds or new Rangers) is simply bizarre.

Oh and Dave – when you went to watch your big team the other week – that tall centre half in the number four shirt, made £20m for Celtic. Not far off a CL amount.

Anyway, please stick around, Dave. The place wouldn’t be the same without you!

So apart form posting on here do you have an active role or is there a group of Celtic supporters that you belong to who are actively trying to remove the board a la Celts for Change??

Or is the purpose of your posts to tell everybody else what they should do? I’ve come in for some agg recently for having the temerity to question your posts, not that I question their content about the live issues around Celtic or the current state of football in Scotland but for you constant bitter remarks about the support and in particular our manager who in my opinion you treat with less respect that the huns do?

    Times are different …

We all suspected that we were being cheated…. by the league and by our Board (always rumors that a portion of ticket sales were not included on the books)…

As for the zombies and the league, we now KNOW, and have EVIDENCE that we were cheated ….

and there is enough circumstantial evidence to implicate our Board in some of the shenanigans…e.g., we knew at some point about the 5WA, but seemingly did nothing … same with LNS….

so, there is a fundamental difference ….

we had a once in a lifetime chance to try to clean up our game, and bring about some real change … but with the exception of what …two leaked letters? …., there is no indication that Celtic have done anything …

So, people were entitled to expect different action from Celtic ….

I get that we wouldn’t have gotten everything we wanted… but a difference could have been made …

people say a boycott would not have been efffective …I disagree …

I agree that most fans dont know about Res 12, and what was really going on ….

but, what if Celtic had taken the bull by the horns, and publicized the problems, and said, … ‘hey Celtic fans… we have been cheated … we want to clean the game up … we want to work with you to do that, but we need your backing ….. so, we encourage you not to purchase away tickets for this weekend, or for Hampden (whatever was decided was appropriate) to draw attention to the problems we are facing’ …. do you not think that sort of leadershp would have (i) drawn media attention to the problem, and (ii) galvanized the support behind the Board?

    I do.

  9. Mahe

We seem to be coming at this from a differing point of view and the goal is the same.

Yip, we have been shafted, have we allowed them to do it should be the question, me thinks yes to a degree, the club said a while back that they were worried about the safety of the employees, I paraphrase, really, this is what the police is for is it not, to serve and protect the people, all the people and not just the peepil.

It’s all about the money, the suits imo don’t give a flying duck for the support, they will shaft them all day long, they will happily relieve anyone who is willing to part with their £49 without a second thought. Would education help here, for sure imo, at a guestimate well over 50% of our support don’t have a clue about the extent of the corruption, Res 12, the LNS whitewash and the like, why not should be the question.

People need chiefs, the chiefs need to be educated to one level just below Peter Principal imo, education, it’s an ongoing thing.

As for the north, again the people needed leaders who were educated to fight their corner.

We are dancing around the point here.

    Take care

Versus them. Zombie , Monkey club 12.

£49 a ticket for 7,500 of thems to pollute celtic park twice a season generates £735,000 income.

    The attendances against them in 2 seasons are 58,300, 59000, 58,300 & 58,500.

Suggesting 1400 seats are needed for segregation.

    Celtic park capacity is 60,400.

This season there have been 6 attendances at Celtic park against other teams of 58,500+.

So there is a demand for celtic supporters to attend.

Cut their allocation to the corner.
