King leaves town before nine-in-a-row

205

Dave King yesterday announced he would resign from Newco’s board following a share issue, to take place early in the new year, almost five years since his concert party won control of the club in March 2015.

The contrast with Fergus McCann, who also stated a successful hostile takeover bid for a lost-looking football club, in 1994, could not be starker.  Fergus left with the Scottish Premier League trophy in the boardroom.  I looked for a photo of Fergus with the trophy, but there doesn’t seem to be one in circulation.  It was not Fergus’ style to flaunt his achievements.

When a Newco historian looks for the principle achievement of Dave King’s time, the image of Tom Rogic’s penalty kick sailing over the Hampden crossbar in the 2016 Scottish Cup semi-final will be top of the list.  That sent Newco into their only major final to date, they face Celtic in next month’s League Cup final.

Five years ago, King arrived with an irresistible commitment to spend “whatever it takes” to topple Celtic.  When the club’s Nomad resigned ahead of him taking control, he suggested another would be in place within 48 hours (we are still waiting).  Once in control he explained that Newco’s finances were the envy of the football world. Seriously.

There were mad suggestions, like taking Oldco out of liquidation, surely made after a liquid lunch, and the aborted plan to sue David Murray for £20m, which came to nowt.  Where King did achieve legendary status was in Shirebrook, the Derbyshire location of the Sports Direct head office.  King’s years in charge of Newco literally saw no end of legal challenges and defeats at the hands of Mike Ashley.  King will continue to oversee the outstanding legal cases against Sports Direct.

The most pernicious defeat King experienced came last month, when the Takeover Panel ‘cold shouldered’ him, a punishment which forbids any entity of financial advisor can act for King on a transaction governed by the Takeover Panel for four years.  This was punishment for the concert party breaking Takeover Panel rules in gaining control of the club in 2015.

While Fergus slipped away from Celtic Park unnoticed while a game was underway and the Premier League Trophy on display, King announced his departure with nothing to show but tears and a solitary second place finish.  He has committed to meet this season’s shortfall, but yesterday explained his business in South Africa was in need of greater support.

On arrival in 1994, Fergus promised to leave after 5 years and did so, King chose this exit moment due to current events.  You can accept his explanation, that Newco are no longer in need of his unique brand of wisdom, that his South African interests have become irresistible, or I can offer an alternative.

Celtic are about to win nine-in-a-row, King’s available money has dried up and he wants to be thousands of miles and several months away from Govan when it all goes down.

I’ll miss him, he’s been wonderful.

  1. TB- Bankier is a figurehead, a shield who takes a few hits on Lawwell’s behalf,if you think PL reports to him, check out the salaries. His is a part time role, mainly to bring in sponsors. A more aloof Board member you would have to go back to the Whites and the Kelly’s.

The Board’s prevarication on this matter for the last six years, coupled with them formally moving to Kill Res 12 at today’s AGM is disgraceful. Absolutely scandalous. Whilst they prevaricated, I had somehow retained a glimmer of hope, that they would support the right thing to do eventually…

    ————————————–

Me too – the signs were increasingly bad, but there was always a wee, tiny, slim hope that there was a master-plan to force the correct outcome.

However – the cynics (and I certainly do NOT mean that as a derogatory term – in fact, perhaps ‘realists’ would be a better description) among us were correct all along.

    Pathetic from the Board.

It was PL who said that he had spoken to UEFA this morning and they said that they had no interest in the matter. PL also said that it was time barred. My understanding is that this does not apply if corruption or criminal activity is involved.

  5. There was a rather dapper older chap sat in front of me at the AGM that stood up to ask a couple of questions, got a few laughs as well.

On the Green Brigade he said that the previous question had kind of “Stolen his thunder” however he went on to say that:

“He loves the Green Brigade, the atmosphere they create, the colour, all of it. However the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result! They need to “screw the nut” and go back to what they did in the beginning, with lots of humour, like the Taxman Cometh and give up the pyros and offensive banners.”

He got a huge round of applause for that.

  6. I also spoke briefly to the requisitioner who proposed Resolution 12 after the meeting to congratulate him on what was said, written I believe by our own BRTH who was unable to attend due to the “lurgy” get well soon!

They will continue to have my support, financial or otherwise going forward, he says, still wearing his Persistence Beats Resistance t-shirt!

  9. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Friesdorfer,

I named Bankier because he was quoted by Celtic underground and on here at the time.

    So second hand.

    Cheers for the correction.

You are correct, there is no time bar on criminal activity and they are aware of that.

The interesting thing about the time bar is that it came into play during .the course of discussing Res12 with the Plc.

They were aware of the change but did not share the information with us during the consultation period.

I found it by accident when looking at the updated version of the CFCB rules. The response we received from Traverso erroneously used it to try and stop us then.

He did not take into account the discounted weekends and holidays stated as not counted in the number of days that count.

But as said, criminal activity had no time bar.

  10. If/When The Res 12 Bhoys carry on the fight and need to do what it takes and hire a legal eagle/QC etc, and need Funded by Celtic supporters, I will be more than happy to contribute in my own small way.

If the Res 12 Bhoys do need Crowd Funding….why not ask Rod Stewart for a few quid, or the whole amount ? I realise that he is “well in” with the Celtic Board etc…but he could hand over monies, without the board ever finding out surely ?

If they did discover that he had contributed to funding Res 12 Bhoys on its way to hiring a QC and/or a Court of Law etc, what exactly could they do about it ….Zilch !

  11. Celtic please listen on

Folks time to dig deep to fund future action with regards to Resolution 12. I will be giving all my support i can financially, physically in person i will give it all the time necessary.

Canamalar was right earlier this needs to be transparent & secure with regards to sums of money.

The next 48hrs i will be looking on here for Auldheids take & or Brth’s input.

Thereafter i will not be on these pages again no hits for Parasite67, plenty of so called Celtic fans out there lining there pockets & you are another brick in the wall.

Today i had it confirmed my club is lost to me i couldn’t give a monkeys for any parasite who takes a single penny indirectly or directly from Celtic or its supporters.

You can’t live off past glories or endeavours forever, you have to fight each new battle & prepare for the next one on the horizon, that’s being a Celtic supporter.

Celtic plc not Celtic fc, that’s the score.

    Fe**n rodents 🙉🙈🙊

  12. Is it normal for Dermot Desmond to send his son to AGMs on his behalf? Did he speak? Was he introduced as having a formal role?

Not much on Google about him other than him opening some burger restaurants with his brothers (they have the franchise in Ireland for the Five Guys chain).

    P. s. Didn’t realise another of Dermot’s sons had married Andrea Corr.

Money, Money, Money, must be funny

    In a rich man’s world . . .

  13. Perhaps this may have influenced the boards thinking on Res 12….

    Morelos value? Lol

Reminds me of the story of Tommy Docherty’s attempt to offload the hopeless Tony Hateley to Liverpool.

Shankly: “So Tommy, the boy Hateley?” followed by a long silence.

Tommy Doc intakes breath sharply and says “Mmm Bill, move fast, there’s lots of interest and the price is rising. 100,000 wouldn’t buy him”

Today’s decision at board level is an absolute scandal.

Corruption is rife will always be rife especially at Hampden and this is because those at Celtic board level have been complicit since 2012 with their inaction.

I’m sorry but me, you and every other fan in this country are complicit because our hearts are ruling our heads and those at board level know this.

The first time we ask the board to help especially now when we really need them they throw it back in our faces and for me this is unforgivable.

What about the loyal fans who take their kids to home and away games, buy merchandise, fund the club through the good times and the bad times with their hard earned cash and this is how they repay them.

I thought a governing body’s objective is to protect every club whereas ours helped another club gain millions and other clubs lose millions and fans aren’t up in arms about this.

Our club are a disgrace and every time we fund the club we play a part in corruption and the board know this and this is why fraud is being swept aside because they know fans will never ever stop supporting and funding.

    Let me say this.

The next time a dodgy decision goes against our club or the SFA are involved in corruption please don’t dare take the moral high ground and complain because you have no right too especially if you continue to fund this charade and these rancid bastards involved in our club.

Mock me, call me a hun all you want but the SFA has been and have been getting away with murder since the Farry days and we’re still witnessing corruption.

Farry, Dallas, Dougie Dougie, uefa licence awarded to one club whereas others struggle.

The list is endless and the more we do nothing about it then it’ll never ever change and those running our game and our chairmen will be happy with this.

Arrange a boycott and believe me they’ll soon stand up and be counted or better still hand the evidence to the police and then you’ll see our board and the rest make moves.

Anyway HH and let’s hope the res 12 boys take it to another level because if needs be I’ll be at the front of the queue with them.

  18. Hopefully 9 in a row, then potentially 10

Time to pull the plug on Res 12

Calculated decision by the Board – fans will never give up on financially supporting the club with this in front of us

For me I will continue to support Celtic, it has been a huge part of my life

    But

I will also quite happily support as much as I can ( financially) independent shareholders to see Res12 reach a successful conclusion

Res12 Bhoys – how about setting up a monthly contribution fund to see this through, as opposed to a one off contribution ?

    Sign me up to this

Scunnered with our board – but – they are not Celtic
