King’s very worrying trait, Gordon too late to the Celtic party

345

I like Gordon Strachan. I took to him when he was picked upon at Celtic, pretty much in the same way Fergus McCann was earlier. What he achieve in the Champions League put his more celebrated predecessor in the shade, but by then expectations, although not comparative resources, had increased beyond what was achievable.

He leaves Scotland in vastly better shape than it was when he took the job, there will certainly be more applicants to replace him than there was when he was appointed five years ago.

Still, the notion persists that Scotland’s resurgence over the last year has as much to do with Celtic’s correspondingly elevated performances than anything else. Gordon is now selecting Leigh Griffiths, universally acknowledged as our Most Valuable Player, as well as Stuart Armstrong, Kieran Tierney, Craig Gordon and James Forrest, players who struggled to get on the team sheet in earlier times.

He is not alone is missing the talent inherent in Armstrong, Forrest or Gordon. The latter was even dropped by Celtic last autumn. But it is the manager’s job to find and select the best talent, not yours or mine.

Do not get too animated about court representations yesterday that Dave King was Impecunious (def: penniless, in penury, indigent, destitute). I am sure he could buy and sell most of us. King’s QC informed Lord Bannatyne that he did not have the wherewithal to offer the £11m or so to buy the remaining shares in Newco, as instructed by the Takeover Board.

Before unseating the previous board, King also said he would invest tens of millions into the club, if necessary. I have no idea if King has the money to comply with the Takeover Board instruction, or to make funds available to the club, but what is clear is that he will say either, if it suits his purpose.

That’s a very worrying trait.capture-20171009-120341

  22. Strachan and McGhee will get squared up till next summer when their contracts are up, thats £500k in wages. There is no way the SFA will pay two salaries on top of that. Malky might end up getting the job if they are indeed skint.

  23. The lawyer for Dave King has described the Rangers chairman as “penniless” in a hearing at the Court of Session.

Lord Davidson of Glen Clova QC told judge Lord Bannatyne that Mr King didn’t have money and wasn’t able to make an offer for the remaining Rangers shares.

He claimed there was money in on shore and off shore trusts but they were in the name of Mr King’s family and he didn’t have control of them.

Lord Davidson said the court shouldn’t pass the order required by the Panel On Takeovers and Mergers because the shares were currently worth 27 pence.

He added: “Mr King is penniless. Any order wouldn’t secure compliance. It won’t. It is pointless.”

Lord Davidson also said that before making an order in favour of the panel, the court may have to hold a hearing into Mr King’s finances.

He added: “My submission is that the court should refuse the order which is sought.

“My Lord should allow the proof of these issues – one way of going forward to is to have proof of quantum of funds.

“However, my Lord is not obliged regardless of consequence to give the order sought.”

Legislation dictates that entrepreneurs who hold a 30 per cent stake in businesses are compelled offer shareholders to buy the remaining shares.

The Panel On Takeovers and Mergers started proceedings against Mr King when he failed to do so.

Advocate James McNeill QC said that financial investigators had believed they had established that Mr King acted “in concert” with three wealthy fans who are nicknamed the “Three Bears”.

He said that Mr King acted with George Latham, George Taylor and Douglas Park to acquire a 34 per cent stake in the club.

Mr King’s lawyers claim that 14.7 per cent of the 34 per cent share was held by a company which is independent of Mr King.

Lord Bannatyne will issue his ruling at a later date.
