King’s very worrying trait, Gordon too late to the Celtic party

345

I like Gordon Strachan. I took to him when he was picked upon at Celtic, pretty much in the same way Fergus McCann was earlier. What he achieve in the Champions League put his more celebrated predecessor in the shade, but by then expectations, although not comparative resources, had increased beyond what was achievable.

He leaves Scotland in vastly better shape than it was when he took the job, there will certainly be more applicants to replace him than there was when he was appointed five years ago.

Still, the notion persists that Scotland’s resurgence over the last year has as much to do with Celtic’s correspondingly elevated performances than anything else. Gordon is now selecting Leigh Griffiths, universally acknowledged as our Most Valuable Player, as well as Stuart Armstrong, Kieran Tierney, Craig Gordon and James Forrest, players who struggled to get on the team sheet in earlier times.

He is not alone is missing the talent inherent in Armstrong, Forrest or Gordon. The latter was even dropped by Celtic last autumn. But it is the manager’s job to find and select the best talent, not yours or mine.

Do not get too animated about court representations yesterday that Dave King was Impecunious (def: penniless, in penury, indigent, destitute). I am sure he could buy and sell most of us. King’s QC informed Lord Bannatyne that he did not have the wherewithal to offer the £11m or so to buy the remaining shares in Newco, as instructed by the Takeover Board.

Before unseating the previous board, King also said he would invest tens of millions into the club, if necessary. I have no idea if King has the money to comply with the Takeover Board instruction, or to make funds available to the club, but what is clear is that he will say either, if it suits his purpose.

That’s a very worrying trait.capture-20171009-120341

  1. Corkcelt, Jozo is not available today. If fit, I would give Erik an hour, we may need him on Wednesday. Ajer popped his shoulder during the week playing for Norway U21s so don’t think he’s available (although he did finish game during week).

  2. Football is a great sport. It invigorates supporters and provides a joy , tribalism and passion not witnessed to the same extent in any other sport.

It can and should be great entertainment. I am sooooooo glad that we have a winning and have arguably the most entertaining team in the UK.

To reiterate what was a common theme last night: The Huns “support” are an embarrassment and a disgrace.

On the other hand I witnessed real football support in the totally justified tribute to Kenny Dalglish. A real legend and as one Liverpool supporter stated ” The greatest ever Liverpudlian not to have been born in Liverpool.”

As for our own legends , roll on the 67 th minute today.

Park Road, McCann will never be able to redeem himself .

At first I thought his attitude towards us on sky was to please his media masters but I was wrong , he detests us.

  4. Saturday morning greetings from Schwabing Munchen . Some sun -high 50s.. Bloated from eating way too much Turkish food last night . Us hicks from the sticks just can’t miss life’s pleasures

Whilst the fact that there have been relatively few fallers limits the opportunity to ‘buy back’, the overwhelming initial response to the competition has gone a long way to compensate.

5 of us from CQN arrive in Munich on Monday. Would be great to meet you. Enjoy the game. Heading out en route to Paradise soon.

  7. While I don’t have any respect for McCann, I feel sorry for him. He rejected everything he was brought up to be when he accepted the deid team’s money to further his career. He has to live with that. He must be really hurting.

  8. Jobo,

Yes, i know. It’s been a fantstic response, and there was no intent to belittle that, so apologies if anyone took any offence at my post. That wasn’t the intention, and the work that both you and CRC put in every week was deserving of better from me.

I’m off to the naughty step until k.o. time.

  9. Well there’s a surprise rom videocelts

Ibrox money man Douglas Park is also a substantial shareholder in Hamilton Accies.

According to Hamilton’s most recent statement, in June 2016 96% of the club is owned by a company called Edencrest with Park the single most significant shareholder after that.

In December 2014 Park, along-with George Taylor and George Letham bought a 16% stake in the Ibrox club from Laxey Partners who had rejected an offer from Dave King.

The breakdown of that deal was that Park owned 6.14% of the club. When he stepped down as a director in June 2015 his son Graeme was fitted out with an extra large blazer as he took his daddies seat on the board.

Along-with Taylor and Letham, Park has provided much of the soft loans that have kept Sevco afloat with Metro Bank refusing to provide overdraft facilities.

SFA and SPFL rules prohibit anyone from having a stake in more than one member club with that rule also applying to family members.

Former SFA President Campbell Ogilvie retained a shareholding in Rangers (IL) despite becoming a director of Hearts two months after leaving Ibrox, a breakfast table sale to his wife made no difference to his rule breaking although no action was ever taken.

In a list of Hamilton shareholders published in June 2016 Douglas Park is listed as Shareholding 14 with 5000 Ordinary shares in the club. Accies director Leslie Gray is listed as having 100 shares- a fiftieth of Park’s stake.

Former Accies secretary Scott Struthers has 300 shares in the club, the President of the Hamilton Academical Supporters Society has 3,000 shares.

In July of this year Gray was voted onto the board of the SPFL alongside Stewart Robertson of Sevco by the top flight clubs.

Yesterday Hamilton confirmed that they have been the victims of an online fraud believed to be in the region of £750,000.

Park made his fortune from Parks of Hamilton and the Park’s Motor Group and was a director of Hearts when Wallace Mercer was in charge of the Edinburgh club.

  10. Bateen Bhoy – ha, ha my post wasn’t meant to be a rebuke so apologies if it came across that way. Plenty more deserving candidates for the Step than you. For example, folk that entered the competition but never paid nor made any picks!

  11. Jobo,

No worries, I didn’t feel chastised, and anyway, I always come on the blog with a virtual volume of Home and Horse down the back of my troosers for the inevitable caning which will come my way one day. ;-)

Enjoy the game today, and will catch up again soon.

  12. 3 points is what matters today, we will once again have a first 11 who have not played together in a competitive match , forget all these one sided scoreline posters does us no good.

I reckon Dundee will kick us off the park today.

Do their damnedest to damage our chances in Europe.

Same as last time, when a 4-0 gubbing was deemed acceptable as long as it weakened us before the old firm game.

Last four words specially to wind up CELTARELLA(!)

  15. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bobby, if Dundee do go out booting the crap out of us with Damien Dallas not punishing them , it should galvanise our support today.

N’tcham took none of their crap at Dens a few weeks ago.

  16. Arrived home after a great couple of weeks in Tenerife. I would highly recommend Puerta de la Cruz.

By chance, I saw Ger57 of this parish on the way home. Had a quick catch up on all this Celtic. Cheers mhate!

Cup S/F tickets arrived this morning and heading off shortly to CP for the Dundee game. Hoping for a 3-1 win but team changes make it hard to predict.

Hi I asked earlier for somewhere to watch the game near Estepona in Costa del solution.

I know it’s on at a bar called timmys in Fuengirola but it’s an hour from me and wanted somewhere nearer.

Got a couple of suggestions earlier from hot smoked but neither have the game on.

I have always seriously disliked the wee turncoat fae the Port since he signed for Rangers. Hope we give his team a proper doing today.

*It isn’t his playing for them that urinates me off, although I still can’t understand why Celtic minded bhoys do that, it’s his absolute hatred for us and he just cannae hide it. What matters a man etc

BTW was reading during the week about a young Morton lad who was bigging up the bin bag, he has a “Tim” sounding name, not that this counts anymore, and played for their youth side and the templars. His Alma Mater was Queen Margaret Academy.

  24. Celtic twitter showing team arriving at CP. No Gordon, Lustig, Jozo, Erik, Brown, Armstrong, Rogic in squad. Lots of youngsters Hazard, Hill, Miller, Johnstone, Ajer
