KT, medical advice, player hierarchy, being ready to make a deal

598

Let’s get the badge kisser-thing sorted once and for all.  We have seen enough of them come and go not to be taken in.  You can set your watch by them.  I don’t believe in a hierarchy of Celtic players, or supporters, based on proclaimed affinity.  You are at Celtic because you want to be here, fan or player, and that’s enough.

Kieran Tierney has been a highly paid and respected professional for four years.  He mixed with others of the same ilk, as well as some who know they are out of their depth at Celtic.  The latter cherish the term of their Celtic contract, the former all wonder what level they will be able to reach in the game.  All of them.  To the best of my knowledge, no Celtic player has rejected circa £75k per week to remain here.

I don’t know what his medical advice has been, but if you read about chronic osteitis pubis, you get an insight into where an athlete’s head may be when he has a persistent injury that is not responding as hoped.

Osteitis pubis is a painful degenerative condition of the pubic symphysis, surrounding soft tissues and tendons…. It is currently considered as one of the most debilitating pain syndromes for athletes. Although the condition is considered self-limiting, it often requires stoppage of sporting activities for several months, representing a significant problem especially for elite athletes.”

Kieran got this move coming off the worst season of his professional career.  We will see if things improve, or go downhill, this season.  Consider what advice his agent would have given him right now.  None of this forms part of the public discourse, instead we got a clumsy social media comment about being out with his pals while Celtic are playing a crucial qualifier.

If we are serious about making progress as a football club, we need to take our player trading onto another level.  That means everyone has a price and we should be ready with replacement options whenever a value offer arrives.

If you think selling your top player for £25m is a bad day at the office, imagine your challengers selling a single player for that sum, and how transformational this kind of money is.  Trading is as much a part of success in the elite game as tactics and fitness.  There are no sacred cows, because eventually, the most sublime talents perish.

We should always be ready to make a deal.  See how it is done in Portugal.  Or look at Ajax, who were going nowhere, then discovered how to trade, sold €72m of talent in 2016-17, €73m in 2017-18 and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2018-19.

Multi-treble winning Brendan Rodgers is not a talent spotter.  He added Scott Sinclair (whom he had worked with) and Moussa Dembele (a John Park recommendation) to Ronny Deila’s squad.  If we are going to spend significant sums of money this summer, better to have Neil Lennon with his hand on the tiller.

It felt like a bad day when Brendan left, but now I am sure it was for the best.  There is no telling the damage Brendan and Lee would do with this kind of money.  Kieran was great, the best left back in decades, and yes, he should have stayed for 10, but I’m already feeling pretty neutral about him leaving.

At Celtic, we love our history more than any others do, but football is all about tomorrow.  Time to get busy writing the next chapter.

    Timaloy29,

Disagree with you on both, Boyata steadied the ship when he settled himself he was going nowhere till the end of the season, made the difference at the back.

In Londong players medicals are done by the specialists we use only when we have to, I think KT was sent there for this issue. So I suspect a club like arsenal would have more thorough examination when they are spending that kind of money anything else is incompetence.

    Excellent post.

We’ve sold our two best players in the space 6 months, and also received £9millon for our previous manager.

    That’s well over £50million.

Not quite the riches that Benfica and Ajax have generated, still a lot of money though.

  3. think this deal suits both Celtic and KT.

This is exactly why the Lennoxtown Academy was built. It’s purpose was to create players like KT that could be developed and sold for profit.

While I still think he could and should have stayed for 10 I won’t lose too much sleep over it. I would rather lose KT than Broony, CalMac or Jamesy. Either of those going might have risked the 10.

I will watch with interest how KT does down there. Will he excel or flop?

A long time ago I predicted that King Kenny would be found out at Liverpool – and I was right.

We found out that he was world class!

  4. And meant to add… from a business perspective I think given the injury’s I think Celtic did the right thing, especially as KT has the desire to prove to the rest he is world class… this is generation FIFA games… the dream for our youngsters is the PL, its the reality.

I sincerely hope KT makes full recovery and has a long and world class career. He is a great lad who done us well. We should be proud he has got the chance to make it stellar… even if it hurts and rubs our noses in the disproportion between the haves and the have nots of world football (financially only as spirtually, culture, history, class … we are the richest club)

  5. Hopefully we won’t be asking the somewhat now inevitable ‘what happened to the Kieran Tierney money “question ?

  6. Regarding the reporting of transfers then the Scottish media are no different in my opinion. During the close season there is no matches and they need to report nonsense.

They have reported on transfers with Rangers as well. This window, we have had as well as Tierney, Ajer, Simunovic, McGregor, Rogic, Sinclair all report as targets when we are not interested in selling.

Now I know that they try and unsettle players but I think most of the stuff is made up as clickbait or to fill columns.

  7. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Hmmmm, let’s think.

A tedious one-upmanship contest with a (supposedly) dead club or an opportunity to go to one of the top teams in one of the top leagues in the world, playing with and against the best players in the world, in a setting that will allow you to establish yourself as one of the best in the world in your position and compete in the later stages of the Champions League.

    Decisions, decisions…….

All the very best, Kieran. Your talent and work ethic deserve a far bigger stage. Go down there, give it your best and you will be a star.

No doubt the ones moaning about it would be totally fine with someone they don’t know coming up to them and telling them who they can and can’t work for.

MACJAY; yep, we wheel n deal pretty well, but we should improve the quality quotient at the cost of squad fillers and pandering to the need to just ‘dae something’ during transfer windows.

Excellent article your best for some time.

With Celtic’s highly transparent for all to see accounting, we’ll have a while to wait, to see where the Kieran money went.

Poor ole Sellick raking in unprecedented amounts just to keep the disco lights on.

  12. Anyone think Lenny will rest “Broonie” tomorrow. We played some of our best football last year when he was injured, although Rogic hasn’t played yet either. A risk too far to leave out “Broonie”? por cierto.

Disappointed to read of the negativity directed at KT,all entitled to their opinions BTW,i thought he would give it a couple of years for the 10,but the Club decided to sell,i wish him the best of luck, and look forward to him coming back. He wouldn’t have been poor staying at Celtic, but we can’t deny these guys the chance of testing themselves at a much higher level, and the money that goes with it.HH

  14. POR CIERTO on 9TH AUGUST 2019 12:45 PM

Might be an idea to rest Broony tomorrow. The only thing is they are absolute hammer throwers. Jullien will come in and possibly Hayes, Bitton, Ralston and Griffiths. Hopefully Mikey Johnston is fit. McGregor and Christie are likely to be retained.

  15. PC- Motherwell will come kicking tomorrow, Broonie will be required, but agree there will be games where he will be rested.HH

  16. If Lennon is not allowed to go out now and spend more then it simply confirms the fears that Lennon was appointed to oversee a downsizing of Celtic FC.

Neil has said he wants to strengthen, Lawwell backs his eye for a player. Now is the time to spend to secure the ten and progress in the CL.

    It’s all there for us.

    Celtic40me,

Bang on, his condition has been public knowledge for a while now, only the prognosis has been kept secret to allow doubt to be encouraged that allows the use of prudent sale argument.

That Arsenal have paid £25M and a long contract sort of relegates that risk argument to the same as he might get crippled by lack of protection in the spfl. It’s the same risk anywhere, he might get crippled in any game anywhere in the world.

  23. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 9TH AUGUST 2019 12:20 PM

    ___

I can agree to disagree on Boyata as it’s just a matter of opinion. I felt like Benkovic, Jozo, Ajer and Hendry (with Lustig as well) would have got us the treble.

You are right to say Arsenal will have access to the finest Doctors and Specialists money can buy but there is no such thing as a sure thing when it comes to medicals. Every club has their own process and risk profile. No standard medical exists.

Arsenal famously signed Kim Kallstrom on a 6 month loan when he was injured. They don’t necessarily have the best reputation.

Ultimately, all premier league clubs can afford the very best but injury-prone players still get signed! Andy Carroll has moved to his third EPL club! Jack Wilshere too.

I wouldn’t say that KT is definitely going to be injury-prone as I’m not a doctor. It’s the logic that makes the most sense to me though…

  24. Canamalar,

All contractors paid, likewise the contractors who laid the new pitch x 2, the LED light system, the improved sound and WI Fi system.

  25. Go tell the Spartim on

    A couple of points

People can brand KT disloyal if they wish to, its their prerogative as it for those that say he’s a legend

People can slag PL or laud him likewise, personally i dont think hes untouchable or irreplaceable, there’s nothing clever in cost cutting, just callousness for those that lose their job etc

Id be interested to hear now (see, as its a blog) what fanciful reasoning can be placed on not spending money on rebuilding the squad, IF that is indeed the case. Best back four, performance wise, last season gone and for me still a little lightweight at CB, and both full back positions. I like Big Tam and Julien and im not discouraged by Boli (as are many others) so further resources to change things up would be helpful.

Would like an enforcer type, like Marcel Desailly for midfield, we have enough options there at present and would also like a CF, if we’re gonna play 2 up front then we need 4, although Sinclair can play there (i cant see the reasoning for wanting him sold)

i’ll try not to be negative as there is plenty of time left in the window, though i would have liked us to be stronger at this point going into (hopefully) the CL play off.

  26. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Bang on, his condition has been public knowledge for a while now, only the prognosis has been kept secret to allow doubt to be encouraged that allows the use of prudent sale argument.

It hasn’t been kept secret but not knowing the prognosis would have jeopardized any sale and had a significant impact on the sale price, which is the last thing bonus-hungry PL would have wanted if we’re to believe the narrative

  31. Where is the denial from Rodgers?Once again, the Board haters are on slaughtering their favourite target with not an ounce of proof. They really cant help themselves. When I see a denial from anyone at Leicester, then I will believe.Until then, they wanted Mc Gregor. Why would’nt they?

  32. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Timaloy29,

The reason for the best doctors is to ensure the risk of buying a dud is reduced as much as possible, every signing is a risk but KTs problem is well known and I expect any doctor would have thoroughly investigated it, I expect all previous results of examinations and prognosis are made available to the buying club. Even if the same specialist is not used however I expect when spending that kind of money the best are used.

  34. From John James,

Those believing that Peter Lawwell will invest the Tierney windfall in players are not paying attention. He will only buy when he has no other recourse. Replacing a £25m thoroughbred with a £3m European journeyman is how he rolls.

Those looking for clear blue water won’t find it a Celtic Park. Peter Lawwell will run it to the wire. Last season he got away with selling two of Celtic’s best players. He was all set to do the same this season. Desmond cautioned against two servings of crow within twenty-four hours.

Lawwell will call this wrong one season. He will cut it too fine and leave Celtic exposed.
