KT, medical advice, player hierarchy, being ready to make a deal

598

Let’s get the badge kisser-thing sorted once and for all.  We have seen enough of them come and go not to be taken in.  You can set your watch by them.  I don’t believe in a hierarchy of Celtic players, or supporters, based on proclaimed affinity.  You are at Celtic because you want to be here, fan or player, and that’s enough.

Kieran Tierney has been a highly paid and respected professional for four years.  He mixed with others of the same ilk, as well as some who know they are out of their depth at Celtic.  The latter cherish the term of their Celtic contract, the former all wonder what level they will be able to reach in the game.  All of them.  To the best of my knowledge, no Celtic player has rejected circa £75k per week to remain here.

I don’t know what his medical advice has been, but if you read about chronic osteitis pubis, you get an insight into where an athlete’s head may be when he has a persistent injury that is not responding as hoped.

Osteitis pubis is a painful degenerative condition of the pubic symphysis, surrounding soft tissues and tendons…. It is currently considered as one of the most debilitating pain syndromes for athletes. Although the condition is considered self-limiting, it often requires stoppage of sporting activities for several months, representing a significant problem especially for elite athletes.”

Kieran got this move coming off the worst season of his professional career.  We will see if things improve, or go downhill, this season.  Consider what advice his agent would have given him right now.  None of this forms part of the public discourse, instead we got a clumsy social media comment about being out with his pals while Celtic are playing a crucial qualifier.

If we are serious about making progress as a football club, we need to take our player trading onto another level.  That means everyone has a price and we should be ready with replacement options whenever a value offer arrives.

If you think selling your top player for £25m is a bad day at the office, imagine your challengers selling a single player for that sum, and how transformational this kind of money is.  Trading is as much a part of success in the elite game as tactics and fitness.  There are no sacred cows, because eventually, the most sublime talents perish.

We should always be ready to make a deal.  See how it is done in Portugal.  Or look at Ajax, who were going nowhere, then discovered how to trade, sold €72m of talent in 2016-17, €73m in 2017-18 and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2018-19.

Multi-treble winning Brendan Rodgers is not a talent spotter.  He added Scott Sinclair (whom he had worked with) and Moussa Dembele (a John Park recommendation) to Ronny Deila’s squad.  If we are going to spend significant sums of money this summer, better to have Neil Lennon with his hand on the tiller.

It felt like a bad day when Brendan left, but now I am sure it was for the best.  There is no telling the damage Brendan and Lee would do with this kind of money.  Kieran was great, the best left back in decades, and yes, he should have stayed for 10, but I’m already feeling pretty neutral about him leaving.

At Celtic, we love our history more than any others do, but football is all about tomorrow.  Time to get busy writing the next chapter.

    Excellent post TBB.

Plenty of cash and either no idea what to do with it or it’s held for a specific liability.

I asked yesterday if anyone knew how much interest was being earned on the cash. My question was why not pay of the loan of £9m costing £540k to service.

The money should be reinvested in assets that are likely to grow the company. Trouble is someone doesn’t like buying those assets or they don’t trust the folk who are meant to be experts and they then go off and do their own thing. Never a good idea for any company to stockpile cash as this will result in a cliff edge at some point. Profit shouldn’t be necessarily result in cash that never budged and grows.

If you can’t spend it because you don’t have the resources buy the resources who can!

  2. I wonder if posts on CQN would offer a more enjoyable reading experience if Celtic were not doing as well as we currently are?

  5. We cannot afford to let anyonr go.. We are threadbare.. a couple of injuries never mind suspensions ad we have had it.. especially if SFA can suspend a few players for no reason at the right time!

  6. GO TELL THE SPARTIM.,

Dont think we are light at CH.Lenny has said today he will re-inforce at both full back positions. There is a ready made Desailly available on loan,Wanyama.Would be a sensational signing for us.Can you imagine him and Broony prowling that midfield.Should pull out all the stops,no matter the cost.

  7. Apart from being routinely assaulted by the hammer throwers I did think that the young KT was being over-played . Rodgers might have rested him from time to time.

    Timaloy29,

Not questioning who the decision makers are, simply saying that if the condition is as serious as JinkyNewtons then I expect it would have been too great a risk which is why I believe while the prognosis was kept secret, while the condition was allowed to become public knowledge, was all part of the take the money spin.

  9. CANAMALAR,

In total denial mode, for reasons only known to himself on KTs release price.

Again, what was the price Celtic said was required? Not met,he goes nowhere.

Again, what was the price Arsenal eventually paid?.

    Again,price met,KT off like a shot.

    Duh,still dont get it.

  10. Like most of us I am really sorry to lose young KT. Make no bones he IS Celtic through and through, but now has the chance to set himself up especially financially, so why all the nasty comments. He gave us all he had when he was here, and as such should be hailed.

I personally think he will be a major success at Arsenal, really hope so.

It is a myth recently created that Lenny has a magic eye for a player.

For every V V D and Wanyama, there was a Bangura , Amido Balde ,Lassad, and dare I say Bolingoli.

I don’t doubt TB’s vision for Lennoxtown was as you state. I’m just not sure it was matched by those who sanctioned its building.

That’s something I imagine you would know better than me given your dealings with them.

  16. CANLAMAR,

There would probably have been quite a few he wanted and never got that went on to do well, it would be those players I expect lead the man who never backed him make such a statement, no?

Someone’s tongue surely firmly in their cheek in Turkey.

John James I’ll give you but Phil?

Incidentally P67 Did Rodgers not want to sign Fabian Scharr who is a fans favourite at Newcastle? The right back at Atlanta Castange? The chap at Valencia?

Yes goodness knows how a team with these guys and added to Edouard, Ntcham and Boyata would have performed? After all, wages was the stumbling block with Boyata wasn’t it? How much is he earning with Hertha?

    Turkeybhoy,

Nothing spawney about it was there, predicted the turmoil at the club would lead to BR leaving, the omens were all there, if you remember you also told everyone at the time I would not face the reality. Bada Bing also seen it, he also wanted a piece of that bet.

Sometimes I’m wrong too, and I try to accept that when enough evidence is provided, when its hearsay and conjecture I try and work with the form to understand the machinations and predict the outcomes.

For example I’m seriously considering a punt on another treble 😃

I predict Lenny will get two more players might also get a loan at most and A priority position will suffer.

Perhaps Lennon has got an eye for a player but the ones mentioned that failed weren’t his?

    Pukki, Balde etc.

Lennon is always careful to refer to the decision makers as ‘we’ when talking about transfers

It’s the lack of cohesion that’s the problem. It’s as though the manager gets his budget to spend then the rest is spent by a committee with the remainder from the Lawwell family nepotism route.

  25. MULLET AND CO 2 on 9TH AUGUST 2019 2:40 PM

The final decision has always been the first team coaches

Pukki was a good player. Just not the right one for us. He suits counterattacking teams.

  26. Go tell the Spartim on

    Turkeybhoy

Im sure we’ll get some full backs in, though i still feel we are lightweight at CB, after Ajer and Julien, we have chocolate legs Jozo (who is prone to rushes of blood to the head and misses too many games, due to surface, injury or suspension), Hendry (who needs to go for his sake) and Bitton, who is a midfielder (he just doesnt anticipate like a defender), i suppose Big Tam could cover the CB position but id prefer, even a loan signing, someone like Benkovic. Im made my views on the scottish players previously linked before so i wont rehash as im trying to be more positive.

  27. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    MM,

Got to say, even when evidence is provided I always carry doubts and no afraid to express them.

KTs statement a case in point, why should I doubt the boys own words.

Well one reason is, it absolved the Plc completely and he appears to have no ambition to see through ten in a row with the club he loves, what bigger dream is there for a Celtic supporter especially in the current climate, except if he was led to believe the greatest contribution he could make to ten in a row, was to earn the Plc £25M and they would guarantee ten and more, and he’s always welcome back to make the Plc more money if his heart desires.

I suppose it is a very cynical attitude but … Ho hum 😃

  28. Go tell the Spartim on

    Bada

i saw that previously, and i think quotes like this from the manager are the reason that a fair chunk of supporters on the internet think that PL is the hooded claw

  29. Ideally we will be able to get rid of Kouassi, Hendry, Ralston, Sinclair, Miller before the window closes.

Can’t see the interest outside of England for Sinclair but Ralston, Morgan & Miller could be loaned to other Scottish sides.

Replace them with real quality and we are really talking.

  30. Melbourne Mick on

    CANMAN

So good to hear you say you have been wrong too, as have we all.

But our constant is our club, our family, and when that fraternity

has been breached then look out.

Think we are a slow burner but the explosion is mega,

Looking for at least two quality signings, if not then my above statement

    will kick in.
