KT, medical advice, player hierarchy, being ready to make a deal

598

Let’s get the badge kisser-thing sorted once and for all.  We have seen enough of them come and go not to be taken in.  You can set your watch by them.  I don’t believe in a hierarchy of Celtic players, or supporters, based on proclaimed affinity.  You are at Celtic because you want to be here, fan or player, and that’s enough.

Kieran Tierney has been a highly paid and respected professional for four years.  He mixed with others of the same ilk, as well as some who know they are out of their depth at Celtic.  The latter cherish the term of their Celtic contract, the former all wonder what level they will be able to reach in the game.  All of them.  To the best of my knowledge, no Celtic player has rejected circa £75k per week to remain here.

I don’t know what his medical advice has been, but if you read about chronic osteitis pubis, you get an insight into where an athlete’s head may be when he has a persistent injury that is not responding as hoped.

Osteitis pubis is a painful degenerative condition of the pubic symphysis, surrounding soft tissues and tendons…. It is currently considered as one of the most debilitating pain syndromes for athletes. Although the condition is considered self-limiting, it often requires stoppage of sporting activities for several months, representing a significant problem especially for elite athletes.”

Kieran got this move coming off the worst season of his professional career.  We will see if things improve, or go downhill, this season.  Consider what advice his agent would have given him right now.  None of this forms part of the public discourse, instead we got a clumsy social media comment about being out with his pals while Celtic are playing a crucial qualifier.

If we are serious about making progress as a football club, we need to take our player trading onto another level.  That means everyone has a price and we should be ready with replacement options whenever a value offer arrives.

If you think selling your top player for £25m is a bad day at the office, imagine your challengers selling a single player for that sum, and how transformational this kind of money is.  Trading is as much a part of success in the elite game as tactics and fitness.  There are no sacred cows, because eventually, the most sublime talents perish.

We should always be ready to make a deal.  See how it is done in Portugal.  Or look at Ajax, who were going nowhere, then discovered how to trade, sold €72m of talent in 2016-17, €73m in 2017-18 and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2018-19.

Multi-treble winning Brendan Rodgers is not a talent spotter.  He added Scott Sinclair (whom he had worked with) and Moussa Dembele (a John Park recommendation) to Ronny Deila’s squad.  If we are going to spend significant sums of money this summer, better to have Neil Lennon with his hand on the tiller.

It felt like a bad day when Brendan left, but now I am sure it was for the best.  There is no telling the damage Brendan and Lee would do with this kind of money.  Kieran was great, the best left back in decades, and yes, he should have stayed for 10, but I’m already feeling pretty neutral about him leaving.

At Celtic, we love our history more than any others do, but football is all about tomorrow.  Time to get busy writing the next chapter.

  1. I honestly read final sentence as ‘time to get busy writing the next cheque’

    Here’s hoping

  2. By the way, I wouldn’t look into Lenny’s comments too much. The club has a large squad and will be looking to offload players at the same time as trying to bring new ones in.

I very much doubt that the recruitment department has been asked to stand down until we get rid of Kouassi and Jack Hendry!

Neil Lennon said we would definitely be looking to sign a left-back and I imagine that’s the priority.

  3. why ar e we banking so much cash and cutting wage bill so much.. when team squad is light? No point putting players on loan to other clubs if we pay bulk of wages. Then moan when players get injured.

  4. Go tell the Spartim on

    Bada

Jozo is good when he’s fit and focussed but i suspect you may be right, its who we replace him (if he goes) with thats the worry. So far its a hit with Big Tam, Julien only seen briefly but promising and Boli (plenty of room to develop, but has some ability)….. so maybe not such a worry, but ……………………………

NFL piece on the BBC (i know) left me a bit bewildered

  5. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

32 in the squad on the official website,

My opinion 33 ideal allows for enoug replacements and development.

So he is going to replace 2 and bring in 1 newbie.

Two purchases and a loan bingo

  6. CANALAMAR,

Mrs TB has just donated £20 to Marys Meals,on my behalf.Had a message back thanking us,so all bets settled.

As for giving anyone proof, you can Eff Off,in the nicest possible way.

I have said before on here, and this does not in anyway include the person in thispost,I hate snides. You know, the people like to make snidey comments, thinking they are being smart. Not smart, just snides.

My comments are always open, and supportive of Celtic. This is seen by some as Happy ClappingA phrase made up to denigrate some fans.

Mrs TB, against my wishes, has just informed me that if you send me your E-Mail address,I will forward onto you the E-Mail from Mary Meals. Many Thanks.

The squad is only light in the fullback areas.

    GK: Bain, Gordon, Hazard

CB: Julien, Ajer, Simunovic, Hendry Bitton

CM: Brown, McGregor, Henderson, Kouassi, Ntcham, Connell

LW/RW: Forrest, Shved, Sinclair, Hayes, Morgan, Johnston

    10: Christie & Rogic

    CF: Griffiths, Edouard, Bayo

I think it’s fair to say we would like to strengthen at fullback, CB and possibly a 4th striker.

We have a bit of deadwood still. Ralston, Miller, Hendry & Kouassi

  9. Go tell the Spartim on

    Turkeybhoy

i think originally it was devised in jest, happy clappers vs mineshafters

Personally i dont mean it in any derogatory way when mentioned

  10. I think it’s clear we need a left back, a right back, a backup centre back and the replacement for Dembele we’ve been promised but never gotten.

And Lennon knows this, because he’s said it umpteen times.

I don’t see – except for shifting out Hendry – where we need to cut players in order to bring those guys in? Because those are the positions where we’re already short.

If we’re going to leave any of that unattended because Kouassi Eboue is still on the wage bill then Canamalar and the other critics have every right to go off their nut.

That said, this window has a long way to go.

  11. JAMES FORREST on 9TH AUGUST 2019 3:33 PM

NFL did say he wants a new player for each wing.

We have an abundance of those.

  12. TIMALOY29:

Like others, I read that as Neil being ironic.

We don’t need any more wingers. I would have said someone for the left, but Mikey Johnson looks as if he could make that position his own and for years to come.

  13. James Forrst,

Yes a long way to go.As I keep saying Why get angry about things that have not happened.Get angry when the dont.In this case,3 weeks less angst for some.Like a wee holiday.

Without the Sun and Sand.I have that.Anda heated driveway.

  14. Timaloy29

Thanks for that. Good summary / breakdown of the squad.

Gumny (Lech Poznan) and Merling (Rosenborg)

I reckon we could attain both for a total of £6.5 / £7 million.

Plenty of pocket change for Pedro and the plc to make bonus.

  15. Be more surprising if NFL has come out in the first presser after selling the family jewels, and said

    “ We’re gonna spend spend spend “

Thank you,but this CQN.You know a blog for many of the Celtic Family

    Aye right.

  17. FC Mitijlland aren’t very good

Sevco have signed bigger, stronger players and will probably be able to bully most SPFL teams this season but in terms of footballers we are streets ahead

I’m sure Lenny will be looking to bring in a bit of physicality

  18. TURKEYBHOY:

The thing is mate, the bloggers need to be on the case NOW … not excessively, but this squad has lost key players in several positions since this time last year. And yeah, we’ve started reasonably well in rebuilding the backline. But Tierney’s departure is another big brick out of the wall and had someone come forward for Sinclair he’d have been gone as well.

I don’t think firing a warning shot or two at the board prior to the closure of the window does any harm. As I’m gonna say in the next piece, they can manage expectations or they can meet them for once, and since Dembele departed without an adequate replacement being brought in, they’ve had their benefit of the doubt. They only get away with that trick once.

I won’t go over the score and no-one else should either, but there are times I wonder – and the first major deadline is for the next European round – if they get this, if they have any intent at all. I personally think if Lennon doesn’t spend some of the money prior to Sparta Prague we should be concerned.

Players don’t have to go right into the team, by the way. A signing gives the whole club a major lift before that game, and puts players on notice that there’s competition for places. That, to me, will be the first thing to watch for. How seriously do we take qualifying?

Try and fail, and nobody will lose the plot.

Fail to try … different story.

  19. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    JF,

I can only be pleasantly surprised from here on in, my sights have been managed so low.

I’m just glad we’ve got Lenny because I know he will make the best with whatever he gets, I also believe he is the right man for the job, too many underestimate him.

  20. BHOYLO83:

Agreed on the Danes last night. I thought they looked like a sub-par bottom six SPL team.

The mob across the city have played nobody yet, and struggled twice.

Gerrard won’t get near us this season, whether we bank the Tierney money or not.

Your getting as bad as Neil Lennon.

He thinks we are playing on Wednesday,

and you think we are playing Sparta Prague next.

    It’s Slavia… potentially

  23. On Jack Hendry, he never seemed comfortable with the Rodgers style of having to continually play the ball out from the back even when under pressure

Maybe Lenny’s new style will suit him better and he will begin to re-gain some of his lost confidence

‘Spend the money’ on a LB, RB, Midfielder and a powerful Centre Forward

  24. RUGGYGMAN on 9TH AUGUST 2019 3:41 PM

Gumny (Lech Poznan) and Merling (Rosenborg)

I reckon we could attain both for a total of £6.5 / £7 million.

    ____

Gumny is apparently off to an Italian team. Not sure who.

Would fit the profile for Celtic.

  25. By the way, if his rehab is going well I would love it if we went back in for Turbull at the end of the window.

  26. !!Bada Bing!! on

Really not getting this need for another LB and another RB,we’re not Man City, Boli will be fine when he settles down, Big Tam was MOTM on Wednesday at RB.Ralston and Hayes/Miller will be decent back up, guys who think we are bringing in another 5 players, are going to be disappointed.
