Kyogo, icon who made Scotland a better place

629

This impact Kyogo made on Celtic is difficult to overestimate.  He cost three times more than any of our other recent players from Japan and established his credentials a week after touching down in Scotland.  In August 2021, Celtic were trophyless and at their lowest point this century.

Kyogo was the spark that ignited the club.  His perpetual motion, enthusiasm, selflessness and his goals, mostly his goals, gave us cause to hope for the future.  He also gave us 8 out of 10 trophies contested during his time in Glasgow.

His first virtuoso performance delivered a hattrick against Dundee.  We thought we were onto something special, but dare not dream of the levels he delivered.  Kyogo enjoys a big game and took special delight in scoring against Newco.  Including an incredible seven goals in 2023.  He terrorised them at Celtic Park, Hampden and Ibrox.

With him on the field, you could be playing badly, but knew something special could happen at any moment.  His hattrick of disallowed goals against Young Boys on Wednesday apparently bookends his time as an active Celtic icon.  His inactive icon status will last decades, though.

Without doubt, he is the best since Henrik Larsson – the only appropriate reference point.  We waited 20 years between the departure of Kenny Dalglish and Larsson’s arrival.  The 17 years between Henrik and Kyogo were filled with some great Celtic strikers, but none possessed the sheer magic of Kyogo.

It wasn’t just his play.  The man picked up litter, comforted injured opponents and wherever he went, made Scotland a better place.  I cannot see someone throw litter away without contrasting them to our hero.  He was an example of how to work hard and live your life.  And there was that smile.

I have been preaching Asset Management here for decades.  ‘Manage your assets or fail to manage your assets’.  Fans like you and I have sporting heroes, but Michael Nicholson’s job (as well as being a fan) is to manage our assets.  A reported fee of £10m for a player who turned 30 this month and had a significantly less effective 2024 than 2023 is Tier One asset management.

I only hope we do not backfill with one of Brendan’s agent pals’ players, or someone he watched a while back but is now out of favour in the English Championship.

Best of luck to Kyogo in France.  Despite his horrendous performance last night Jack Butland will be a happy man today.

  1. Those that know me a little will know that I enjoy Horse Racing.

I have read this morning that MANY Horse Trainers are considering to refuse to give TV Interviews on Courses etc UNLES they are PAID for their time and trouble etc by TV Companies ?

I think the TV Companies rely on those Pre/Post Race Interviews, and I think the Trainers will WIN this ” Arguement” if they push ahead with their plans ?

What next, Football mangers and Players REFUSING to give TV Companies interviews any Interviews Pre/Post Match…It wouldnt surprise me at all ?

Ive NOT made up my mind yet IF the Horse Trainers are correct or not over this issue ?

P.S…..I would PAY McCoist good money to walk away from Punditry…hes very good at walking away I hear !

  2. Big Jimmy thanks I am fine now.

    Hope you are well to.

The 31st I will try and make it.👍

    D. :)

  3. lets all do the huddle on

if a racing tv programme is asking a trainer to come onto their show via videolink etc then i can see why that might include an appearance fee.

but the thought that trainers might want paid for a quick 1 minute chat about their horse in the parade ring right before a race sounds ludicrous.

as for football managers press conferences – the press conference the day (or sometimes 2 days) before a game that they always give – managers should be allowed to insist that questions they get are only about that specific game, and not some of the tabloid pish that the hacks like to ask

  4. IF the Horse Trainers get their way, will the Jockeys , Horse Owners, Stable staff etc follow suit and demand payments for TV interviews , no matter how brief ?

    Where would it end ?

    HH.

  5. Footballers come and go – so the composition of a team is constantly evolving and no player is guaranteed to stay at a club for a long period of time; essentially, it signifies the transient nature of players in the sport.

This can be a frustrating reality for fans that become attached to specific players, as they may have to adjust to seeing new faces on the team regularly.

Celtic is a trading club and needs to buy and sell a certain number of players at a profit to survive in the very limited environment in Scotland. Sometimes we get the players we want when we want them, sometimes not.

We don’t have the deepest pockets therefore there will be times when we are disappointed – that doesn’t mean the model is flawed, or, that we do not try hard enough. What ultimately matters is the survival of the club and its ability to continue operating and remain in business over time; it must generate enough revenue to cover its costs and weather economic challenges. The transfer model forms an important part of this overall strategy.

Some of our number are biased to interpret things negatively; whether that be assessment of the manager, board, transfers, team performance, or, topically, the damage caused by the biggest storm we have had for many years. The question is why do we indulge in this self-inflicting wounding when we know there are many on the ‘outside’ geared-up to slaughter our club ‘at the drop of a hat’?HH

A reminder that the meeting in the 20:10 pub, Johnstone set for Thursday has been postponed until further notice. Saltires en Sevilla will let me know when it will take place. Shipbank Shipwrecks meeting will be going ahead as planned, 31st January.

  9. A scoring draw at Villa coupled with highly possible defeats by 2 goals for Lille or Feyenoord (playing each other) and Brest would see us seeded for last 16 assuming other results go to expectations.

This would likely mean we would play either Brest or Lille or Feyenoord with first leg away.

    Worth having a go.

  10. Sutton talking bollocks.Kyogo wanted to go.Rennes wanted him now.End of story.No drama,no blame on Celtic.its football.People sobbing,and complaining,grow up.We move on.

Fans who go and see Celtic week in and out do not need to be told of footballs transient nature.

They experience it year in year out.

Stop being a condescending prick, fans adjust to in and outs season after season.

Celtic is and always has been a trading club, this was put in Jeopardy by the executive of the club in 1994,Celtic coming within minutes of becoming a memory,so you will just have to sup it up when fans question what our executive(tho totally different) do with our money. It was a strong part of Celtic culture pre 1994 and it was correct to be so,the executive are lauded for the success’s criticism by highlighting money wasted(see chairbhoy&spikeys post) makes a lot of fans question what is happening with our money.

On the whole your imagined division of thought and criticism of bloggers drives Celtic forward.

No one in our number is being negative by questioning what is our model.

Is it backfill of players nowhere near Celtic standard Shved etcor is it raising the bar on our development model like Engels and Trusty.

We have pockets deep enough to change the goals of our model,we will have nigh on £100,000,000 pounds in bank next interims,

that is not money put by for the child abuse case as you vomited onto these pages as Cloud9.with no apology. We know who our enemies are,in your case with the above false theory you are within and just fartin out your arse, the change in moniker was seen thro,is it attention seekinxg

Celtic fans always want what is best for the club,Peter Lawell and Chris McKay and Michael Nicholsan know this, they are fans too,it is not negative, the only negativity shown is Paul67 barb yesterday.

So if you can indulge in a bit of hun theorizing and not take responsibility for it,slaughtering our club from the inside, dont be thinking a change of moniker covers you,so less of your fake divide and rule pish,it does not cover it.you are not true to yourself never mind Celtic

  13. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL @ 9:34 AM,

    Cheers…

Yes, it does lay the lie that some would have you believe Brendan is aloof, arogant doesn’t get on with players and maybe “player development isn’t for everyone” but it is certainly something our manager excels at…

    MAJESTIC HARTSON @ 9:54 AM,

    Thanks for that link…

    Hail Hail

  14. After two weeks in the hospital following surgery, my good lady is being allowed home this afternoon. I won’t miss the sofa bed but the care she has received has been brilliant and, fingers crossed, she is well on the road to making a full recovery from the big C.

Thank you for all your best wishes pre-surgery, you are a great bunch.

Now I can start letting my mind get occupied again by trivial things like why hasn’t Kyogo been officially announced by Rennes and Jota by ourselves? Conspiracies abound about failed medicals. As everyone and their dog knows he has a dodgy shoulder so 10 million is a big gamble on someone who could easily miss the rest of the season with one awkward fall.

Big Jimmy might need to tell us the odds of Kyogo being on the score sheet on Wednesday against Villa :)

Thought all Celtic games were like that

The full film shows the halftime spill onto the park by rangers fans, trying to stop the game, polis got in about them and the cup was bout 3 rows down.

I`m not really one for watching football on the telly but, as Utd are my `other` team I would like to watch this one.

  17. The `neutral ` Craig Levein comment on the game today:

” They ( Sevco)needed something, something to change their mindset. Hopefully that can bring it for them.”

    Hopefully??

  18. The Tangerines v The Oranges.

The former could have been 2 or 3 ahead but let them back into it.

A bit more belief was needed; hopefully Goodwin can instil it in them at half-time.

  19. Brendan Rodgers:

“To be in management, you need to have a real commitment and a real passion for the job. But for that, you have to enjoy it. I’ve been very, very lucky in my life to work with brilliant players but more importantly, brilliant people. I’m here in a club that’s really authentic. People that work hard and they give you absolutely everything.” I came back here with a point to prove, and I had to shake off some things that, for some people, I will never be able to shake off. The most important thing for me is Celtic and giving them the best that I possibly could.”
