Kyogo, icon who made Scotland a better place

629

This impact Kyogo made on Celtic is difficult to overestimate.  He cost three times more than any of our other recent players from Japan and established his credentials a week after touching down in Scotland.  In August 2021, Celtic were trophyless and at their lowest point this century.

Kyogo was the spark that ignited the club.  His perpetual motion, enthusiasm, selflessness and his goals, mostly his goals, gave us cause to hope for the future.  He also gave us 8 out of 10 trophies contested during his time in Glasgow.

His first virtuoso performance delivered a hattrick against Dundee.  We thought we were onto something special, but dare not dream of the levels he delivered.  Kyogo enjoys a big game and took special delight in scoring against Newco.  Including an incredible seven goals in 2023.  He terrorised them at Celtic Park, Hampden and Ibrox.

With him on the field, you could be playing badly, but knew something special could happen at any moment.  His hattrick of disallowed goals against Young Boys on Wednesday apparently bookends his time as an active Celtic icon.  His inactive icon status will last decades, though.

Without doubt, he is the best since Henrik Larsson – the only appropriate reference point.  We waited 20 years between the departure of Kenny Dalglish and Larsson’s arrival.  The 17 years between Henrik and Kyogo were filled with some great Celtic strikers, but none possessed the sheer magic of Kyogo.

It wasn’t just his play.  The man picked up litter, comforted injured opponents and wherever he went, made Scotland a better place.  I cannot see someone throw litter away without contrasting them to our hero.  He was an example of how to work hard and live your life.  And there was that smile.

I have been preaching Asset Management here for decades.  ‘Manage your assets or fail to manage your assets’.  Fans like you and I have sporting heroes, but Michael Nicholson’s job (as well as being a fan) is to manage our assets.  A reported fee of £10m for a player who turned 30 this month and had a significantly less effective 2024 than 2023 is Tier One asset management.

I only hope we do not backfill with one of Brendan’s agent pals’ players, or someone he watched a while back but is now out of favour in the English Championship.

Best of luck to Kyogo in France.  Despite his horrendous performance last night Jack Butland will be a happy man today.

LADTH: As well as the Celtic game yesterday there were many Irish over for the Glasgow Warriors v Connacht rugby match. I met a guy this morning who intended going to both and there would have been many like him.

Great keeper? Long service but I never have thought of Pat Bonner as any better than ordinary, anytime I have the misfortune to hear hime he always has a negative slant on Celtic, I dont listen to Sportsound now at all.

I think the penalty save v Romania elevated Pat Bonner to St Pat level well above his goalkeeping capability. Definitely not great in my humble opinion.

  5. a celtic sports village, go back to our roots, a football and athletics club, with cycling and basketball.

would there be an apetite to support other forms of celtic ?

I’ve been bemused by the reverence shown towards Aston Villa since we drew them.

Not saying it will be easy, but I’ve always thought we can get something from the game.

Cycling events were hugely popular in the late 19th century, attracting crowds of up to 10,000, and Celtic Park hosted many major racing events including the 1897 World Cycling championships.

The cycle track at Celtic Park was used for the last time on Saturday 17th May 1913.

“Tell how I got involved in athletics? A short story. Pride of place must be given to the lads of the village – Cathcart the village. We lads used up all our spare time in athletics. My strong suits were football, quoiting and running. I had even a short lived reputation as a cricketer.”

My strong suits were football, quoiting and running. I had even a short lived reputation as a cricketer.”

Andrew Dick, his boss in his office, signed him for Clydesdale Harriers and he ran cross-country and track until approached by the Celtic FC representatives, and “Celtic the new football club absorbed me and my time ever since. Why not sports for the new club? Why not, indeed! The MacLeans had their own boat, we will have our own sports. Hard work it was to convince the Committee, but ably backed up by my brother Tom and the late J.H. McLaughlin I succeeded. Some audacious deed was that. Our old enclosure at Dalmarnock Street was all right as a football ground, but as a sports holding enclosure it left much to be desired. Willing workers had made the ground; they did their best to produce a track. Certainly it did look well – so long as it was not used. It bore strong kinsmanship to a garden path. I am mindful of course that there were very few good tracks at that period. In the Western area, Hampden stood out as the best.”

As he said, other football clubs had their own sports meetings with the best in the west being Rangers, Queen’s Park and Morton while Hearts was the biggest in the east. But back to the first meeting. The Scottish Referee said in its issue of 4th August, 1890,

“On Saturday the Celtic Football Club made a beginning at sports holding and a promising one it was. Next Saturday the by event comes off and Celtic Park will be big-crowded indeed. The various events have been filled well, and sport will be good, in addition to which it is well to remember that the meeting will be under good management. Entries can yet be made with Mr William Maley.”

I like the idea of us utilising the velodrome.

Is there an appetite for other sports?

Not sure but heard the manager or CEO of the Glasgow ice hockey team on radio Scotland a few years ago who said they had the biggest average attendance outside of Celtic & Der Huns (maybe Aberdeen too).

There might be some people who support these teams because they’re not linked to the “old firm” but even if it was rented out to them it could help make it viable.

We’d maybe need to keep the name more neutral than the FTQ stadium. How about the Bada building? 😀

    Great shout St Stivs,

Get lots of the local youngsters involved in the athletic club – boys and girls from youngsters.

There would be hundreds that would love to train with Celtic Athletic club. Build their self confidence and maybe even get someone competing in the Olympics one day 👍🏻

But has Kyogo actually signed for Rennes?

Not seen anything showing him holding up Rennes scarf or farewell message on Official website.

  14. JOE if you are still about here is a question for you.

Which international footballer achieved the unusual and unwanted hat-trick of his first three matches featuring a Scotland own goal?

  15. when i read of the celtic sports, the ambition and drive of those early board members is just incredible.

1911 was a big one for the club and no effort was spared for the sports and the Glasgow Herald reporter started his article thus:

“Besides FL Ramsdell, HE Gissing and JJ Flanagan of America, several distinguished English athletes and cyclists took part in the annual sports of Celtic FC at Parkhead on Saturday and, as a consequence, competition in many events was very much above the average of what is usually witnessed in the city, celebrated as it is for its rare sporting associations. The Celtic management spare neither money nor time in connection with their sports, and this season by way of celebrating an interesting epoch in their history, they extended more invitations than they usually do, with the result that Saturday’s meeting in many respects will hold a cherished position in the club’s records. Large as the attendance was, it it would have been larger still but for the tramway strike. As it was, the official estimate was 30,000. The arrangements of Mr Maley were in advance of anything previously witnessed at Parkhead, and when we mention that over and above football there were 53 different events all of which were disposed of in three hours and a half, it will be admitted that there has been nothing better in the way of athletics management seen in the city. Every item was so rapidly dealt with that there was scarcely any time for reflection. “

  18. Understanding the ‘Dark Triad’

Trolls score high on cognitive empathy: intellectually, they understand other people’s emotions, which means that they know how to make them suffer. But they score low on affective empathy. They don’t feel others’ pain, so when they hurt you, they don’t care.

“There has been some research to understand the characteristics of online trolls,” explains Dr Linda K Kaye, who specialises in the psychology of gaming and online behaviour. “Much has focused on the ‘Dark Triad’ traits, which are ‘Psychopathy’ (callousness, remorseless behaviour); ‘Machiavellianism’ (good at manipulating others for personal gain); and ‘Narcissism’ (grandiosity and preoccupation with their own self-advancement). And, as you can imagine, these are all what we would understand as quite undesirable traits in others.”

“Social media is a great vehicle for people who are passive aggressive”

  19. Some individuals are outspoken by nature. Others tend to think that they are morally superior to others. And some just enjoy making other people uncomfortable or angry. Any of these traits may drive individuals to express themselves online without a filter. Personality traits such as self-righteousness and social dominance orientation (in which you think some social groups, typically yours, are inherently better than others) are related to expressing intolerance. Others are “hard core” believers who will express their opinions no matter what, because they believe their opinion is infallible.
