Kyogo, icon who made Scotland a better place

629

This impact Kyogo made on Celtic is difficult to overestimate.  He cost three times more than any of our other recent players from Japan and established his credentials a week after touching down in Scotland.  In August 2021, Celtic were trophyless and at their lowest point this century.

Kyogo was the spark that ignited the club.  His perpetual motion, enthusiasm, selflessness and his goals, mostly his goals, gave us cause to hope for the future.  He also gave us 8 out of 10 trophies contested during his time in Glasgow.

His first virtuoso performance delivered a hattrick against Dundee.  We thought we were onto something special, but dare not dream of the levels he delivered.  Kyogo enjoys a big game and took special delight in scoring against Newco.  Including an incredible seven goals in 2023.  He terrorised them at Celtic Park, Hampden and Ibrox.

With him on the field, you could be playing badly, but knew something special could happen at any moment.  His hattrick of disallowed goals against Young Boys on Wednesday apparently bookends his time as an active Celtic icon.  His inactive icon status will last decades, though.

Without doubt, he is the best since Henrik Larsson – the only appropriate reference point.  We waited 20 years between the departure of Kenny Dalglish and Larsson’s arrival.  The 17 years between Henrik and Kyogo were filled with some great Celtic strikers, but none possessed the sheer magic of Kyogo.

It wasn’t just his play.  The man picked up litter, comforted injured opponents and wherever he went, made Scotland a better place.  I cannot see someone throw litter away without contrasting them to our hero.  He was an example of how to work hard and live your life.  And there was that smile.

I have been preaching Asset Management here for decades.  ‘Manage your assets or fail to manage your assets’.  Fans like you and I have sporting heroes, but Michael Nicholson’s job (as well as being a fan) is to manage our assets.  A reported fee of £10m for a player who turned 30 this month and had a significantly less effective 2024 than 2023 is Tier One asset management.

I only hope we do not backfill with one of Brendan’s agent pals’ players, or someone he watched a while back but is now out of favour in the English Championship.

Best of luck to Kyogo in France.  Despite his horrendous performance last night Jack Butland will be a happy man today.

  1. AT,

Really baffles me how your brain picks up on things.I was saying that was the prices paid for top strikers now.Not that we should pay it.In saying that,I have read and heard many saying we need a top striker in to replace Kyogo. Also heard many saying we paid fat too much for Idah.£ 9 million would not buy you a half decent reserve striker. But there you go.

I had the full inside track on Toney, and wrote it on here.Every word proven true.Does that upset you?.

Now engage your brain, read things properly, not what your addled brain is telling you is written.

On the other hand, Packie Bonnar is a waste of airtime. I’ve been listening to this guy on Shortie for donks’ and have yet to her him say something interesting let alone useful. The sense is that he turns up unprepared, opens his gub to belch when asked and leaves with his cheque. Great keeper, crap pundit. And as the regular Token Tim on the show, a longstanding squandered jersey.

Some individuals are outspoken by nature. Others tend to think that they are morally superior to others. And some just enjoy making other people uncomfortable or angry. Any of these traits may drive individuals to express themselves online without a filter. Personality traits such as self-righteousness and social dominance orientation (in which you think some social groups, typically yours, are inherently better than others) are related to expressing intolerance. Others are “hard core” believers who will express their opinions no matter what, because they believe their opinion is infallible.

  15. I understand the asset management arguement.

    But.

I have a hole in my heart .

Kyogo was my favourite player at the club .

The best striker since the son of Lar.

    At 61 , I cannot remember a striker with better movement .

He was light years above the players around him in that respect .

    The ultimate Hun skelper .

I think he is going because he didn’t enjoy the change in role that BR enforced upon him .

It removed him from preying on the last defender , as much as he liked .

In the end it affected his confidence.

He was a marvellous hunslayer .

In my lifetime I have suffered lingering emotional sadness when Dalglish , Nicholas , Larsson , and now Kyogo have gone .

At 61 , I should not feel like this .(:-)

He was our Emperor of Japan .

    Sayonara Emperor Furuhashi.

  16. I hope Brendan doesn’t waste the cash .

I have said before that I am not confident about his eye for a scout or player .

Adam Idah doesn’t score enough goals to replace Kyogo .

    Watch This Space!!!

    TINYTIM on 27TH JANUARY 2025 1:52 AM & 1:54 AM,

Think the “Fraudgers” myth has been well and truly burst now.

Look, we may well end this season with the best season in a generation.

We may well end the season with our best football team for a generation.

Week after week Brendan Rodgers and a senior player at the club do a presser, an open and transparent presser.

It is mostly very informative, it is always very professional.

For several years after Rangers died, we had a hotch potch in player recruitment, leading with Lenny Mk1 leaving due to his best players being sold – ending with Lenny Mk2 being mutualled because we’d lost the ability to rebuild a football team.

We lost the ten in a role and our CEO resigned

The recruitment problem was eradicated when a new CEO and Ange arrived, the team was rebuilt with professional efficiency.

It stayed that way only briefly, as a new recruitment team was brought in, headed by Mark Lawwell.

Unfortunately, Hotch Potch would be a compliment to our subsequent recruitment – one doesn’t want to be derogatory, but it was dire.

In January 2024 the recruitment process was restructured as much out of necessity than anything else – it was then headed up by the manager.

Again we saw an immediate step up, not only in recruitment but overall squad management, still “on plan” as per Celtic’s stated approach, yet much constructive and proficient use of resources.

As I stated, this upgrade may well contribute greatly to Celtic having their best season in a generation and ending the season with the best team in a generation.

On the “Fraudgers myth”, Brendan brought in Lee Congerton, a very accomplished football recruiter, he’s on record as stating he was not allowed to bring in the players he wanted to Celtic.

He went to Atalanta, the team they built there, reestablished Atalanta as a top Club in Italy and won the Europa Cup last season.

Of course Lee Congerton was at Celtic during the smoke n’ mirrors era where communications were deliberately woeful and the fans misled – “every penny we make will go back into the club”.

The Ange rea moved us on…

A couple of years back it looked like we were going back to the bad old days but no, the Club has moved on – the real movers and shakers were not going back, as the Dublin recruitment summit clearly shows.

Yes, it is tough to see Kyogo going but three and a half fruitful years, his powers waning, doubling our money – do we really still need to play the blame game!?

It clearly is what it is – it was time, don’t dishonor an honorable man and great player by making it something it’s not.

The anti-Rodgers stuff is really thin gruel now, we need evidence to back up these absurd assertions.

And I’m not talking about bigging up Tilio or Kwon for a cameo, or doing down Adam, who over a year has brought a lot to our squad.

No, please stop myth making and smoke n’ mirrors because what we are seeing now is the reality.

And you know – it’s so much more effective than the snake oil…

    Hail Hail
