Kyogo, icon who made Scotland a better place

629

This impact Kyogo made on Celtic is difficult to overestimate.  He cost three times more than any of our other recent players from Japan and established his credentials a week after touching down in Scotland.  In August 2021, Celtic were trophyless and at their lowest point this century.

Kyogo was the spark that ignited the club.  His perpetual motion, enthusiasm, selflessness and his goals, mostly his goals, gave us cause to hope for the future.  He also gave us 8 out of 10 trophies contested during his time in Glasgow.

His first virtuoso performance delivered a hattrick against Dundee.  We thought we were onto something special, but dare not dream of the levels he delivered.  Kyogo enjoys a big game and took special delight in scoring against Newco.  Including an incredible seven goals in 2023.  He terrorised them at Celtic Park, Hampden and Ibrox.

With him on the field, you could be playing badly, but knew something special could happen at any moment.  His hattrick of disallowed goals against Young Boys on Wednesday apparently bookends his time as an active Celtic icon.  His inactive icon status will last decades, though.

Without doubt, he is the best since Henrik Larsson – the only appropriate reference point.  We waited 20 years between the departure of Kenny Dalglish and Larsson’s arrival.  The 17 years between Henrik and Kyogo were filled with some great Celtic strikers, but none possessed the sheer magic of Kyogo.

It wasn’t just his play.  The man picked up litter, comforted injured opponents and wherever he went, made Scotland a better place.  I cannot see someone throw litter away without contrasting them to our hero.  He was an example of how to work hard and live your life.  And there was that smile.

I have been preaching Asset Management here for decades.  ‘Manage your assets or fail to manage your assets’.  Fans like you and I have sporting heroes, but Michael Nicholson’s job (as well as being a fan) is to manage our assets.  A reported fee of £10m for a player who turned 30 this month and had a significantly less effective 2024 than 2023 is Tier One asset management.

I only hope we do not backfill with one of Brendan’s agent pals’ players, or someone he watched a while back but is now out of favour in the English Championship.

Best of luck to Kyogo in France.  Despite his horrendous performance last night Jack Butland will be a happy man today.

  1. I would imagine Parkhead will need rigorous safety checks prior to the game tomorrow

I genuinely think the time to judge Adam Idah is at the end of season 2025/26.

Stuck record time – but going on strike (ok, going through the motions) during preseason is the root cause of his current malaise.

Whoever advised or guided him (or didn’t when they should have) served him badly.

Looking at the bigger picture though … there is a legitimate “so what?” response to his CURRENT form.

I assume Brendan Rodgers was set targets before a ball was kicked this season and also set the group targets?

Those targets appear to have been met already or have a very good chance of being met before season’s end.

If they are? It’s down to the whole group …. INCLUDING Adam Idah.

Have others done more heavy lifting than him this season?

    Of course.

But they are an honest, humble group.

Adam will know he needs to carry more of the load next time.

  5. I hope Idah does begin to show some form, Has he that ability? Imo, the jury is still out. The best suggestion I have heard so far in replacing Kyogo is to play Maeda through the middle, as he does for Japan.

At the moment, it seems to me that Michael Nicholson

has decided to gamble that a 13 point lead is big enough that a misfiring striker can carry us to the league title..

I hope he is judgement is sound as we really don’t need another £8 million as much as we need a twenty goals a season striker.

  7. BSR you need to LEARN a bit more about Rennes.

A city of culture, great industry and education

not of course to be critisised for its abject failure

    Kyogo will love there.

  8. lets all do the huddle on

“Unfortunately today’s severe weather conditions have caused some damage at Celtic Park.

Our stadium and safety staff are currently unable to fully assess the extent of the damage due to the ongoing extreme conditions.

In light of this and in order that we communicate fully and openly with our fans, in the interests of supporter safety, we are unable to confirm at this stage whether the match tomorrow between Celtic and Dundee (Jan 25) will be able to proceed.

Of course, we will be doing all we can to ensure that it does.

A full assessment and decision will be made as early as possible tomorrow morning (Saturday) and we will update our supporters as soon as we can.

We thank our supporters sincerely for their understanding.”

  9. I was surprised that an earlier contributor siingled out ‘French Eddie’ for praise. His last game for us was at Ibrox with Kyogo on the wing. I don’t think I have ever seen such a sullen, uninterested performance from a Celtic player. At one point in that match he missed from three yards and he showed not the slightest sign of remorse. He contributed much less than nothing and showed contempt for team-mates and suporters.

Former footballer Joey Barton pushed his wife to the floor before kicking her in the head during a drunken row at their family home, a court has heard.

The former Manchester City and QPR midfielder, 42, is accused of assaulting Georgia Barton, 38, in Kew, south-west London, in June 2021.

NO MENTION HE PLAYED FOR HUNS. .However in other news PADDY CRERAND who played for CELTIC 60 years ago charged with drink driving. Best wee country in …………

  15. Paul The Spark on

Would Kasper be included as one of Brendan’s agents pal. Or someone he has watched before?

His saves on Tuesday got us through. Paul 67 & Burnley 78 are turning into the Mike & Bernie Winters Show.

  16. I had thought the recent drop in performances reminded me of the COVID season. i recall that the players were queuing up to ask for a move.

Now we know that Kyogo was wanting a move for months and he was obviously not the only one. It is interesting to see the team he has chosen to leave for. A team like Rennes rarely win anything and at best are mid table, I think that either Kyogo no longer liked Celtic, its tactics and maybe the manager.

I wonder who else is seeking a move we know of Palma, Nawrocki and Taylor as well as several players out on loan. Hatate? Johnston? CCV? I dont know but I reckon that there are several “want aways”

  17. A full assessment and decision will be made as early as possible tomorrow morning (Saturday) and we will update our supporters as soon as we can.

too late already for many thousands travelling from further than the central belt.

  18. Guys,

Lots of videos and pictures circulating, depicting damage and debris to our infrastructure.

Sometimes its bit premature to single out and make fun of the big hoose damage without thinking about our own ground.

our game being off could be a blessing after all those games, and concentrate on the villa tie.

  20. Guys,

There’s not many travelling today. Most forms of transport to and from Glasgow is off.

Celtic will need a team of abseilers to assess and put right the damage.

They will rightly err on the side of caution

    HH.

  21. I would also welcome the game being off tomorrow.

European football must be our priority at this time.

    HH.

  22. IF the Celtic game was called OFF Tomorrow, it MAY NOT be a bad decision as maybe some of the Players would welcome a few days break before the Villa match ?
