Kyogo, Maik, Carl

264

It was quite a fascinating weekend in the Scottish Premiership.  Celtic started the action by labouring before taking the lead and moving into cruise control against Ross County.  St Mirren bookended the action by scoring a 95th minute winner at Easter Road.  Motherwell rode their luck to earn a point at Dundee, St Johnstone continued to concern their fans by going down 0-2 to Hearts, while Aberdeen failed to make a single attempt on target in a 0-0 at Livingston.  Oh, and Kilmarnock failed to read the script by beating Newco.

The excitement Kyogo generated two years ago, on his first league start for Celtic, against Dundee, was palpable.  He scored a hattrick, causing us all to hope we had signed the real deal.  Two years on and the evidence is overwhelming.  His performance on Saturday was just as impressive.

Twice he dropped deep to create a chasm of space behind that he filled with two inch-perfect passes.  David Turnbull should have scored with the first, Matt O’Riley made no mistake with the second.  His goal was not an easy strike; placing a bouncing ball from 12 yards with enough control to keep it on target, but still managing to beat the keeper. Turnbull’s head-flick and Liel Abada’s early cross both contributed to an excellent move.  He is without doubt in the top two Celtic players of this century.

Maik Nawrocki showed enough to indicate why we spent so much money bringing him to Glasgow.  His first involvement was a choice to concede a corner within 15 seconds of the start.  It’s what we would expect in a Champions League encounter, less so against County, but the player was right to take no chances.

For two years I have lamented the infrequency our central defenders break the lines and carry the ball forward – as Kris Ajer did.  Maik took one opportunity to do this, hopefully we’ll see it again.

We are a few weeks shy of two years since Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers teamed up in central defence.  In that time, they have not lost a single game over 90 minutes to Scottish opposition.  Carl took the more difficult left-sided role, despite being right footed.  If, as likely, he moves on this week, he leaves a big jersey to fill.

And, in the modern world, is there such a thing as mens netball ? if there is where is the reporting of it ?

Ha Ha, I am up for a game but I am not sure they will find a skirt big enough !

  3. as an aside,

my wife managed to record the road race cycling yesterday in glasgow, she said you will like the views of the country, and that stuff, so i gave it a go,

I thought jeese oh 270 kms of peddaling , that is some endurance test, but watching it, once they got to the city, why do they do that 20 laps type end of the race, it went on and on and on, i thought is was nice for the people to see something (how many tricolours btw), but it must have been boring after say 2 laps, why not just have a big long road race that gets to the city as the real end point,

just sitting here wondering (another great sport).

  4. My issues with English Sport is very simplistic, I want every English Team be they men, or women, to lose. Regardless of what type of game they are playing and who they are playing against..

When it comes to individual Sports I’m not that bothered, I have a big interest in Boxing and over the years had great admiration and liking for a number of English Boxers,

The teams, the Supporters and the British Media just piss me off.

  5. When I rad about how biased and jingoistic the English media is about their teams, can I assume that those same posters feel that that is not the case by Scottish journalists concerning Scotland teams?

FWIW, I feel `we` are even worse.

From BBC Scotland gossip section today, this has to be a wind up surely?!

  7. agree on Nawbrocki carrying ball forward – but would prioritize central defenders ability to win areal battles defensively and offensively. Links with Harry Souttar types excite me. I might actually get off my chair when we have a corner and be less anxious when opponents have corners.

LB would solidify what’s developing as team with good backbone – work to do!

  8. I am going to set myself up here but ………….

I dont understand anyone of Irish or Scottish or Black heritage buying into the whole I am an England supporter first.

Ian Wright being an example. he really does my head in on it.

I met a best pal from school just the day after lockdown, he came up to the port from milton keynes, he has lived there 30 odd years, he has 3 bhoys, grown up now, and they played at a decent level, Luton, MK Dons, he was a good player himself.

We talked about going to the games way back in the 80s.

I was gobsmacked when he told me they were all looking forward to getting back to wembley for the england games, as they have the supporters club package,

    i really did think wtf.

dont get me started on irish people supporting english teams either.

I have read this, and just scrathed my head as to what contractual part share in ownership of the player could thems , the 2nd rangers, have on the player.

They never bought him, they had a loan of him, with an option to buy, he only played 28 games but in the crazy biased envirnment of scotland he got Young player of the year, so you send him back form the loan, how can you be due any future cut of a transfer fee ?

I can only think they agreed it as some sort of “development fee” for playing him in a season, but i really so struggle with why you would agree that as the “owning club”, ie why would bayern do it ?

tillman is a german american btw.

This grew legs from a hun website then consumed by the SMSM as gospel. Bayern pull out of the loan deal and pay huns £1m plus 10% sell on fee.

The problem when dealing with compulsive liars is they forget what was previously said. DR changes this story regularly, first shot was above, since two lower level EPL sides were after him for £10-15m.

High time you stopped interfering and reined in your overactive sense of power.

Yeah – I think we saw half of it on Saturday.

The other half is making the late runs into the box to get picked out by a winger or advanced full-back when the players already there are marked. A bit like how Abada makes those runs into the box from a high right position but instead they are coming from deep and central. Defenders are mostly ball-watching and by the time they notice the player it’s too late.

Armstrong was good at that, Petrov, Burley. Even Ledley although not as prolific would pop up with a few of those. Gundogan at Man City over the last three years or so as good as anyone. Always liked a good goalscoring MF.
