FORMER Celtic fans’ favourite Kyogo Furuhashi ended his seven-month goal drought in Birmingham City’s 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Sheffield United at St Andrews last night.
The Japanese international frontman’s last strike came in the champions’ 4-1 triumph over Ross County in Dingwall on January 11.
He moved to Rennes shortly afterwards in a £10million switch, but, amazingly, did not claim a solitary counter for the French club before ex-Hoops assistant boss Chris Davies took him to the Midlands club in the summer.
Kyogo, who scored 85 goals for the Parkhead outfit in three and a half years after Ange Postecoglou had paid £4.6million to lure him from Vissel Kobe in July 2021, had an effort ruled out on his debut – a 1-1 home draw with Ipswich Town – but there was no doubting the validity of his strike against the Bramall Lane side.
He swooped in the fifth minute to tuck away the crucial goal after being set up with a neat pass from Demarai Gray.
Kyogo, 30, was withdrawn 12 minutes after the turnaround before the visitors levelled through Gustavo Hamer, but a strike three minutes from time from Jay Stansfield eased City into the next round.
