KYOGO FURUHASHI has revealed the new challenges he will confront in France with Rennes could help to propel him back into the Japanese international squad.

The 30-year-old striker surprisingly quit Celtic last week in a £10million switch to the struggling Ligue 1 side who sit fourth bottom just five points above Montpellier in the drop zone.

Kyogo, who collected 85 goals at the Hoops after his £4.6million recruitment from J-League club Vissel Kobe in July 2021, was under contract at Parkhead until the summer of 2027, but pushed for a move and lasted 66 minutes into his debut on Sunday in his new team’s much-needed 1-0 victory over Strasbourg.

The speedy frontman has opted for a complete change of environment in his efforts to attract national supremo Hajime Moriyasu.

RED ALERT…Kyogo Furuhashi enjoyed a winning debut for new club Rennes.

Kyogo was overlooked for his country’s recent involvement in the 2022 World Cup Finals and then the Asian Cup showpiece, but is desperate to reach the next global extravaganza due to take place in Canada, USA and Mexico next year.

The former Celtic fans’ favourite, according to a report in the Daily Record, said: “I think that if I can prove my strength in France by playing every week, I will be called up by the national team again and I will be able to show a different side of myself.

“I cannot claim to be called up with certainty, but if he can demonstrate my ability at Rennes, it definitely adds to my chances.

“I just want to make an impact here and create chances for my team-mates and, of course, I’m very pleased we won in my opening game.

“There are a lot of players in France with very high technical abilities and I know I will challenge myself every day.”
