The script was written for Jota to come off the bench on his return after 18 months and score in a Celtic win. His last kick of the ball for Celtic before departing was to put us 3-1 ahead of Inverness Caley Thistle in the Scottish Cup Final.
Adam Idah seems to have flicked a switch, returning to form from last term, while Daizen Maeda sparkled throughout, including when he played through the middle.
None of that moves the dial, however. If Celtic do not sign a striker today they are undeniably taking a risk with the second half of the season. There remains a Kyogo shaped hole in the squad. Over to you, Brendan, Michael.

I’ll have a cyber bet with you of a pint of porter that Kane scores atleast 3 goals against us over the 2 legs ,if they start him in both matches.
TT
Lest we forget, Maeda plays CF for the Japan national team. ;-)
Selling Kyogo without having someone to replace him seems feckless, however there are two things to consider:
1. was the Jota signing mutually exclusive or was it inextricably linked to the Kyogo deal?
2. Rennes sacked their manager a couple of days later. Would the deals have gone through under a new manager?
Also, before the inevitable the Board this and the Board that, keep in mind Tisdale is the manager’s man. What has he been doing since early October?
This morning I’ve listened to one talking head say we should just have signed “anyone” (are Cummings and Kenny mere optical illusions?) and another say “just pay the money”. Both comments are idiocy of the highest order.
Finally, it will be interesting to see if Rodgers mark 2 is different from Rodgers mark 1. The rest of the season should not be a problem if he’s as good a manager as we think he is. Wrap up a treble and see what his “football doctor” comes up with in the summer.
We have sold, arguably, our first choice striker.
It appears we have been aware of this possibility / probability for a few months
We have not replaced him in the recently closed trader window.
The only conclusion I can draw, is that our overall recruitment strategy has failed on this occasion.
This is likely to include several key individuals and a number of decisions, check points along the way.
Word of the day seems to be ‘disappointed’
Chairbhoy @ 8:26 am.
Cheers.
Fair point.
I’d completely forgotten about Holm.
I assume (and hope) Lenny is out temporarily only for game time.
Bernabei? In my head, he was gone already.
Loan with option to buy basically means the training bib is freed up.
All that is left to be decided six months later is where to and how much.
TINYTIM – I look forward to raising a glass of 0.0 Guinness to you if we keep him to two goals or less :)
Not sure why he so looked so ineffective in the Euros, he was dropping deep to get the ball and seemed out of sorts with whatever system England were playing.
Surely with Rodger’s saying that Kenny and Cummings are staying ,good no use in having a academy when young bhoys aren’t giving first team opportunities, could save Celtic millions if one or two of them come good, and this patter of them being to young a lot of nonsense.
Malone Bhoy @ 8:07 am
I think there’s an assumption that because the CL is longer drawn out it makes it more difficult. We’re not in the business of buying from CL clubs.
—–
Understood and agreed.
But we all share a transfer ecosystem with an increasingly complex and unclear hierarchy.
Maybe one for another time but the transfer landscape is hugely different from just three years ago.
First, back then transfers were almost exclusively inbound into one place. Europe.
European clubs are now selling for big money into North America, South America and Arabia.
The market place and the demand are huge.
The supply (players) is finite.
Second – FSR. Money is tight. Supply is tight.
Impact of both together?
Every club is working harder (including the super rich because they can no longer throw cheap money at the problem).
Avenues previously sneered at now being explored.
Italian clubs buying Scandinavians direct, bypassing middlemen clubs in the Netherlands and Germany.
Italian clubs buying surplus English talent.
Lloyd Kelly? For €20m?
Seriously Juventus, have you no pride?
AD- Correct, Brendan will identify the player, and give a rough estimate on what his value is,the rest is up to the suits. If Brendan says Brondby were taking the piss re putting up the fee ,I seen €8 million go to £12.4 million, so we walk away.My issue is we knew Kyogo wanted away a couple of months ago, Brendan said he wanted a replacement, we should have been scouting players, to open negotiations at the start of the Window, if like Brondby, clubs are at it,we can move on to another target early in the Window, not the faffing about on the last day and end up with nobody, it looks very amateurish.
Given the amount of subs we can have on the bench, put Kenny on it every game, and give the guy playing time,to see what he’s got.
So many assumptions presented as facts.
I believe most fans would have liked a new striker in but lots of people have bemoaned the lack of playing time for Daniel Cummings and how academy products are never given an opportunity, surely this is a chance for the young man.We turned down an offer from West Ham for him maybe Brendan wants to keep him beyond the summer and therefore wants to give him first team opportunities?
shambolic.
The aim is to come out of a transfer window stronger than we were going in.
So whether schlupp and jota are better than valle and kyogo is the question.
Not much in it for me.
The hand of God – stories that Cummings has signed a pre contract with West Ham
I don’t know but my guess is that the reality of the situation has bitten Brendan, and unfortunately us, on the arse.
He hasn’t signed a decent player in January for ten years, certainly not one as good as Kyogo not because of lack of smarts, but because one’s in his budget, want to cone to his club and are at a club who will sell are very very hard to come by in this window.
That we needed a replacement was, realistically beyond his, our, control. We found ourselves in a very difficult situation.
In Brendan’s first January window overseeing recruitment he was faced with a dilemma the club has had to deal with for years. You’d be more inclined to show understanding if he didn’t go into it talking about how easy it should be to replace Kyogo despite all the evidence suggesting otherwise. Money sometimes isn’t enough.
kyogo desperate to go, anywhere in fact.
that is the mystery for me.
is his replacement playing in japan now ?
minority of one here.
i didnt need another striker right now.

“We have been scouting Kvistgaarden for 2 years so we probably rate him. i’m not saying he is the answer but someone at celtic rates him.”
Yeah, he was scouted by the old much maligned setup under Mark L I think, though at that stage he was over 50% cheaper allegedly (and likely true as this season is a wee purple patch for him though without Euro exposure).
Given a lot of the other signings we made under that setup have been rejected en-masse I am surprised this is still seemingly the main option being pursued two years later.
As I say, happy to see Idah and Kenny get a shout and if not good enough then we look again – but if Idah is not good enough to be the main striker at 9M then we need to learn lessons. I still think he will come good though and that Kenny might prove suitable SPFL backup.
Still be good to get a 3rd striker in though and by end of season we will know the level we need on the basis of giving both main options available to us a good chance hopefully.
BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL @ 10:28 AM,
Yes, I should have clarified, I meant housekeeping in the round, selling players that wanted to go, or were already away, getting players like Lenny, who is a great prospect, necessary game time.
And if course giving Holm, Palma, Welsh the chance to move on and find life after Celtic.
It just makes things tidier, more manageable, Rocki remains a bit of a mystery for me!?
Hail Hail
If the club was keen to sell Kyogo in this window then they should have went shopping before the sale not after. Selling so close to the end window gives the selling clubs the advantage, particularly if they know you have a purse full of gold.
They’ll up the price which is natural and sensible, my guess is they upped it too far and the club said naff off and I can’t disagree with that!
Imo, there is more to the Kyogo saga than we know. On the face of it, it doesn’t make any sense to me. Again, imo. it is too simplistic to say that he wanted to move months ago. If so, why didn’t we have a replacement lined up or refused to let him leave until the summer?
“Trade No1 Talisman player Kyogo for Jota (we traded Di Canio for Reggie Blinker)”
fair comparison ? get a grip
Had Jota stayed, he would have been on the way to becoming the next Henrik in terms of Celtic Star appeal
Head of football operations Paul Tisdale 👍
SPIKEYSAULDMAN @ 11:08 AM,
Think there was a wee bit of sarcasm there;))
Hail Hail
PRESTONPANS BHOYS @ 11:04 AM,
Yes, for me it was dependent on the way the last two lots of UC League games went.
If we ended drawing a PSV for example, expediting the KT transfer or getting a quality striker would have been our priority, to get through to the next round.
We would not have had a great bargaining position.
As it happened, we were in the position to walk away from those deals, which we obviously did.
Hail Hail
Paul Tisdale is Brendan Rodgers pick .
He has flown under the radar ,so far .
That won’t last forever .

Mostly good post; I agree with a lot of it – ‘cept the bit slagging fellow Celtic fans in the last sentence.
Jota back; Kyogo money banked; surplus stock loaned out; KT on the back burner and an EPL-seasoned unit hungry for game time in da house as a utility option. Decent by most good club’s standards.
Bayern shipped x3 goals against the 2nd bottom of the Bundeswhatsit on the weekend, Stattos say their weakness is in stopping opponents from creating chances; we’re pretty good at that. So they can be got at !

minority of one here.
Not one. If we were too sign one it would have been a development player, January is a dog of a window for signing quality players, its best left until they Summer when we can take our time and theres a much bigger market for the sort of players we could sign.
Unfortunately Brendan doesn’t seem to have seen it that way.
TINYTIM on 4TH FEBRUARY 2025 11:30 AM
It must be one of the worst jobs in football right now
new article posted.
If we couldnt get proven quality in, why arent we signing the sort of players who will come – the next O’Rileys and Kühns?
Genuine Question – not being snarky.
Can anyone post a link to something that evidences BR being unhappy with the window?
THE LONG WAIT IS OVER on 4TH FEBRUARY 2025 12:04 PM
I think the get a striker or else quotes the other day suggests he will be. Everonye seems to think its the case after what he said
Quadro,
Thats not lagging off Celtic Fans, its the truth. When did so many become such entitled, spoilt, greedy, idiots. Some still believing we should have kept Kyogo.Idiots.He wanted out,and a blind man could see the connection between him going, and Jota coming. If we knew he was going we should have someone lined up.We did,a couple of players.Too expensive. What, does that not come into their thinking?.Spoilt, stamp their feet, demand we spend, whatever their club asks, when we dont, blame whoever.Entitled.That sometimes idiot,James Forrest, today demanding sackings. For what?.Managing to bring in KT,and Jota,in during a January window.Whoever dreamt we would ever have a window like that? Now its not good enough.
This league is won,the Treble looking very likely.Qualified for the play offs, with the squad.Kyogo, past his best goes,we sign two,for us superstars,a great start for next seasons CL qualifier. Not enough. The worst bit for me are the ones deliberately ignoring we have two first team strikers playing.Idah and Maeda.Does Idah never get the chance to be number one?.
Just sick and tired of this attitude. And all this,Brendan wanted nonsense.Yes,like every other manager in the world.Does anyone think Ange got all he wanted?.In much more need.
I go onto FF to get a laugh regularly.Celtic blogs, becoming no better.Thank God they dont speak for the majority.By the way, that’s who I was meaning.
