La Liga president steps into Catalonia debate

719

President of La Liga in Spain has stepped into the Catalonian independence referendum debate by saying if Catalonia became independent clubs from that region, notably Barcelona and Espanyol, would have to leave the Spanish league and compete within their new domestic boundaries.

This claim is without foundation as multinational ‘domestic’ leagues are authorised by Uefa, Fifa and the EU, while Spanish clubs are able to compete with foreign clubs in European competition, but this intervention is likely to be one of the more emotive topics in the Catalonian debate.  Would Barcelona fans vote for Catalan independence if it required them to withdraw from the Spanish league and hand back their status as one of the game’s world powers?  Some would, some wouldn’t.

Football is the key cultural touchstone of European nations.  Those who want to preserve the Spanish nation know this.  Excluding Scottish clubs from the England and Wales football market has an enormous commercial impact on top-flight clubs here.  It also means that our key cultural touchstone is Scottish.

Those who want to build a cohesive UK would be more productive by working to end the exclusion of Scottish clubs from the England and Wales league than telling nationalists they would be wrong to hold another referendum.

Popcorn and ginger on hand for the latest Newco Rangers episode.  Flash mobs and EGMs, all destined to further tear the club apart.  As we’ve said here for years, internecine strife is the only thing that can really damage a club. That lot seem to have a infinite supply of the stuff.

  9. Hartsons comments in todays media are exactly what the msm crave, it deflects from the real issues that anyone with a modicum of journalistic integrity should be investigating,

unfortunately there are many ex players only too willing to supply them with the ammunition.

Everyone has and is entitled to their opinion on all matters Celtic, youd think the penny would drop with some of them that theyre only asked to comment on the negative aspects of the Club.

    …..

Sutty’s comments in the Record. Nothing particularly controversial. Compared to the views on Ronny here and from the CFC support in general, it’s fair to say Sutty has been diplomatic.

Never understood why being honestly critical of the club is a hanging offense for ex players yet the support are willing to dish out dogs abuse to Ronny, abuse the players, boo them off at half time and full time, phone the hotlines etc.

    Barca / Catalonia etc .

Commentator on Sicilian radio claimed that the potential problem stemmed from parliamentary legislation in Spain relating to La Liga . He claimed that the relevant Spanish legislation would have to be amended to allow Barca and Espanyol to play in the Spanish league . He added that it is Parliamentary law that allows teams from Andorra to play in Spain and that equal opportunities legislation would require a team like Barca to be treated in the same way as a wee team from Andorra

I have not checked the veracity of his claims.

  18. Hartson,Sutton, Walker, all getting an earner from this SMSM, should be ashamed of them selfs slagging off the celtic manager, the players choked on Sunday, not the manager, Stokes missed to blot headers and shrugs his shoulders, in fact if my memory serves me right, the last time Stokes put his head on was an Elvis impersonater in Dublin, useless pluck.

I tend to agree that I don;t see much wrong in what Sutton has said.

Best statement from him was after we lost the league at Killie and he said we knew the Pars would lie down. Honest as the day is long big Chris.

That’s interesting. Do things like that not amount to Government intervention in football, which FIFA and UEFA seem to frown on (well, they do if you are a no mark country)?

I disagree. I think we are better than good, experts I’d say, but it does take two to tango.

I’m hoping some sort of strategy for better communication comes from recent consultation exercises by Celtic.

So much more could be done to explain the clubs vision and strategy for getting there.

will be interesting as with proper support many of the causes of complaint and division can be removed.

  29. If I read this right…

If Catalonia became independent from rSpain, Catalonian teams can still play in the Spanish league (due to multinational ‘domestic’ league precedents).

Therefore, since Scotland has chosen not to become independent from rUK, Scottish teams should be allowed to play in the UK league.

The main problem with an informal fallacy is that it often stems from a flaw in reasoning that renders the conclusion unpersuasive. This is no exception.

  30. Paul67

The advantages that a UK League would have in binding the social fabric of a United Kingdom surely cannot have been missed by even the dimmest of our politicians in Westminster?

  31. @Parkheadcumsalford

Which is exactly what I was complaining about. It’s who you are getting into bed with. You should know who the Record are and who they sell to. I know that it’s about making money for these guys but you should know that working for the Record is not working for Celtic. You are part of the media who try to divide us and break us.

To say that Deila was entirely wrong in his assessment and Brown was right is just a case of falling into the common British cliche’s. Nobody was hiding. Our finishing was rank and that’s the end of it. Ronny is right to be happy that we created chances but he has to be concerned that we missed them. It was the same against Maribor, against Zagreb etc.

That’s not to say every criticism is wrong. Though people need to take a step back and understand that this is transition.

I believe we will start seeing progress in November/December. We will be clear at the top by Christmas and the over-the-top criticism will be forgotten.
