La Liga president steps into Catalonia debate

719

President of La Liga in Spain has stepped into the Catalonian independence referendum debate by saying if Catalonia became independent clubs from that region, notably Barcelona and Espanyol, would have to leave the Spanish league and compete within their new domestic boundaries.

This claim is without foundation as multinational ‘domestic’ leagues are authorised by Uefa, Fifa and the EU, while Spanish clubs are able to compete with foreign clubs in European competition, but this intervention is likely to be one of the more emotive topics in the Catalonian debate.  Would Barcelona fans vote for Catalan independence if it required them to withdraw from the Spanish league and hand back their status as one of the game’s world powers?  Some would, some wouldn’t.

Football is the key cultural touchstone of European nations.  Those who want to preserve the Spanish nation know this.  Excluding Scottish clubs from the England and Wales football market has an enormous commercial impact on top-flight clubs here.  It also means that our key cultural touchstone is Scottish.

Those who want to build a cohesive UK would be more productive by working to end the exclusion of Scottish clubs from the England and Wales league than telling nationalists they would be wrong to hold another referendum.

Popcorn and ginger on hand for the latest Newco Rangers episode.  Flash mobs and EGMs, all destined to further tear the club apart.  As we’ve said here for years, internecine strife is the only thing that can really damage a club. That lot seem to have a infinite supply of the stuff.

  1. Say what you like about Chris Sutton the pundit but CS the player would not miss some of the impostors on show now at our club.

  2. My niece is a dietician………… I had a wee conversion with her last weekend at a 70th party

A lot of what I asked her was because of our apparent obsession lately with diet..

She was sort of laughing cos I had a pint of Guinness in my hand at the time…

To cut a long story short…….her jist was most things are OK in small amounts and not too regularly…..

So chips fine as long as not too often ……cakes I mentioned… cos am partial……..she said sugar was a big no no ……worse than crisps !!!!……which shocked me…

    Anyway….too much bad…a little OK…

  4. The other thing about Sutton is….nobody from the MON team should be lecturing on diet and fitness.

Think about all the late collapses in big games: Lyon away, Bayern Munich away, AC Milan away, Lovenkrands in extra time….helicopter Sunday. They were the squad who couldn’t handle playing in four competitions and ended up winning nuffin. A Rangers team managed by bloody Big Eck won a treble.

But aye. Chips are no bad!

Ah the old British league. Probably just in time for the high-speed rail link to reach Scotland. Wonder if Patrick Kluivert will still be Ross Co manager…..

Chris Sutton scored a last minute winner against Rangers at Celtic Park is he absolved from blame?

The season we lost in Seville the players were burnt out going for 4 tournaments when we should have focused on the UEFA cup. We can win the league anytime but the UEFA cup was a once in a generation opportunity.

  8. I’d imagine that those in charge of football operations at Celtic assign roles on the basis of performance/talent rather than where a player comes from

    ——————————————————————————————————————–

I’m fairly certain we have signed players at least in part because their acquistion opens the club up to new markets, especially in far east Asia.

  9. If Celtic do eventually join a European League, i am assuming it will be home one week away the next.

Will we suffer from a “European Hangover” every second week and play badly at home?

    If not, why not?

Have had a word with BT?

He’s been in that hospital long enough now to have some meaningful connections.

Seriously, that is terrible for your good lady, especially if she was worried in the run up to the op.

Now she could be stressed until January!!

I wish her a speedy recovery!

Really don’t understand Celtic strategy with fans, why are they constantly chasing us away ? What is their motive behind some of the decisions being made ?

I can’t work this one out, but, chase us away they are and continue to do

    Hail Hail

Call the ward back, ask for contact details for Clinical Service Manager, get him/her on the phone and lodge a complaint, IF theres been a medical emergency then fair enough, that happens and they will take the list forward on clinical need at the time, on the other hand if its been bad planning then somebody needs to explain that to Mrs MT

  15. scotlands shame on

on cold light of day and some reflection I would like to apologise to manager and for an outburst the other day about team after hamilton game.

Have forced myself to watch the highlights again and while Hamilton should have had 2 more (mainly because we were pressing so much) we had 7 clear cut no debate should have been a goal opportunities and had score been 7-2 with same performance I would not have been on here moaning. So to save being a hypocrite I come out now to say i was wrong, however, games like this happen, but one or 2 a year, we’ve had to many so far.

but onwards and upwards, win our game in hand and lets move on united.

Not jyst the physical but the worry you go through every time you go through a procedure.

  17. @LiviBhoy

The reality is that over the course of MON’s time we lost quite a few important games in late goals because we were puffed.

Sutton certainly isn’t absolved of blame. When Strachan came in and got the players fitter, he didn’t want anything to do with it and left.

I know somebody involved with the club who told me that during MON’s last season the team were lazy. MON was working part-time (who can blame him of course) and didn’t become involved with training much at all. The team were out of the league until Craig Bellamy dragged them back into it and in the end they still lost it.

The wages those guys were picking up. Sutton was great when he was in his pomp for Celtic but he is in no position to talk about fitness and management. He was a player who didn’t look after his fitness enough and a failed manager.

Your most likely bang on the button, and it is one of the challenges we are currently facing on a daily basis, that being said it does not detract from the fact Mrs MT should have been afforded an explanation, if we cant communicate effectively with the patient and family at a time when they need it most then were potentially making matters worse,
