La Liga president steps into Catalonia debate

719

President of La Liga in Spain has stepped into the Catalonian independence referendum debate by saying if Catalonia became independent clubs from that region, notably Barcelona and Espanyol, would have to leave the Spanish league and compete within their new domestic boundaries.

This claim is without foundation as multinational ‘domestic’ leagues are authorised by Uefa, Fifa and the EU, while Spanish clubs are able to compete with foreign clubs in European competition, but this intervention is likely to be one of the more emotive topics in the Catalonian debate.  Would Barcelona fans vote for Catalan independence if it required them to withdraw from the Spanish league and hand back their status as one of the game’s world powers?  Some would, some wouldn’t.

Football is the key cultural touchstone of European nations.  Those who want to preserve the Spanish nation know this.  Excluding Scottish clubs from the England and Wales football market has an enormous commercial impact on top-flight clubs here.  It also means that our key cultural touchstone is Scottish.

Those who want to build a cohesive UK would be more productive by working to end the exclusion of Scottish clubs from the England and Wales league than telling nationalists they would be wrong to hold another referendum.

Popcorn and ginger on hand for the latest Newco Rangers episode.  Flash mobs and EGMs, all destined to further tear the club apart.  As we’ve said here for years, internecine strife is the only thing that can really damage a club. That lot seem to have a infinite supply of the stuff.

JH and CS do have Celtic in their hearts IMO. Their attacks are not motivated by a hatred of Celtic but by concern over the present situation. They just happen to have voiced those concerns through a publication which DOES harbour a hatred of Celtic and ,for that, I would criticise them.

I have just booked a business trip to Toronto and will stay 2 more days to spend with family. I return to Uk on 9th Nov leaving Toronto at 18.30 so will be there when Celtic are at Pittodrie earlier that day. Where is the best place to see the game if I can escape the family for a while?

  7. mike in Toronto, That is a well reasoned post and I find it hard to disagree with any part of it. My beef though is with Ronny himself, we are light in mid-field and I believe the bulk of our problems stem from there. He continues to favour the same formation playing 2 wingers quite often playing the left footed player on the right wing and the right footer on the left, and adds a man who can’t graft (Kris) into the mix as well. It seems to me we are perpetually playing a man short. He has also made a series of inexplicable, infuriating substitutions.

  8. Mike in Toronto-very good post, even though i don’t agree with all of it mate.I think football players in general ,are very slow on the uptake re new formations. This won’t help RD,but he has to get results through the changes he is trying to implement.HH

Depending on where you are staying… the downtown club is based at McVeigh’s – an old Irish pub … I used to go in (some nice lads), but stopped going as the owner ( a grumpy old git) didn’t want me bringing my nephews to watch the games …

so, a couple of great lads I met on here (Torontony and Teuchter ar la) invited me to the Scarborough club (north east end of the city)… made me and the kids feel like family ….

I dont get up to the club much now … usually watch the games at home on the computer …

so, you have three options … McV, Scarborough, or you would be welcome to watch it at my place (no square sausage, but I usually cook a good breakfast during the games)….

let me know, and either way, I can try to join you.

like you, I hate the 2 midfielder/winger/forward formation …. it really means a 4-2-4 … and, without calling it that, NFL played it too often, and often, we got rag-dolled in the middle of the park ….

for now, I would either go with a 4-4-1-1, with 4 mids, and commons behind guidetti, or 4-4-2, with maybe brown, biton, and johansen, and a winger (either Wakaso or Forrest), behind a front
