Lack of consistency haunts Celtic again

748

Celtic have been completely dominant in Scottish football on many occasions but only once did this result in a domestic treble (the treble was won another two occasions when Celtic were only marginally ahead of the competition but were ruthlessly focussed).

At all other times we have had a morning like this, tossed out of one of the cup competitions by a vastly over-performing team.  Little more than a handful of games against weaker opponents stood between us and a treble in each of the last two years, but as we have noted for many years now, Celtic are not consistent enough to win the treble.  The evidence is substantial.

There are parallel ways we should react to this.  In the middle of a Champions League campaign we should be focused on little else, players should be rested for the challenge ahead, even if there are resultant risks, but there will be disappointment that we didn’t see a recognisable performance from those drafted into the team.  It wasn’t until Matthews, Commons and Stokes arrived last night that we looked anything like the Celtic we know.  On no occasions should we lose at home to a Championship team looking for their first away win since April.

That domestic treble from a dominant position was achieved by Martin O’Neill in season 2000-01, a time when Martin scarcely made a substitution before 85 minutes, never mind rested players.  This drew criticism, of course, as his ‘feeder’ players were denied opportunities to grow.  Despite last night’s reversal I would still rather use these games to develop the wider squad.

I also don’t subscribe to the belief that ‘every game is a cup final’.  Motivational strategies lose effectiveness if you roll them out too often.

Credit to Allan Moore and his “boys with desire and work-rate”.

  1. Funny to see a snooker player on telly saying guys should be given life bans for match fixing……

  2. When watching goals being scored during TV shows doing bits of the games that day we invariably see balls being powered into the net. Neck muscles, veins, sinews all going to rocket the ball into goal.

I watched our 27 corners and resultant headers and what contact we did get onto the ball with heads were loopy little pansy headers. Where are the Jimmy McGrorys ?

Ton weight ball then laces and all. We can have all the corners in the world but if nobody is prepared to be brave we will just have to wait for someone to kick it in.

  3. Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano will miss next week’s Champions League trip to Celtic……wonder if we will get over 20 odd corners against Barca ….Braw nights ahead

Hmmmm, dunno what to make of that. Have they asked the police to investigate hate mail to him,or the personal attack as he was out with his wife?

  5. Writing off players after a few games is absolute nonsense. However last night was humiliating for the Club. Like others I’d have gone with most of development squad but I can understand that Lenny wanted to give game time to Rogic, Biton,Derk & Pukki. We can only hope last night was a one off, and redemption must start on Saturday at Rugby Park.

  7. A common feature of the early days of CQN was the arrival of new posters who complained that the open format of CQN, with a title head and no enclosed sub-threads, was too confusing and indiscriminate for them. They always asked Paul why he did not make it like the other Celtic sites where you could pick and choose what you wanted to read.

At that time, I was defensive of the format of CQN and said that we should try to be different from other blogs and stated that you would miss a lot of quality if you only read certain threads.

Sadly, I no longer believe that opinion to be true.

The controversialists (Kojo, KevJ, TSD and Mickbhoy1888) or liars and wind-up merchants as they are, have come to dominate this blog, not only with their own self-sustaining conversations with each other but with dragging in others who like a bit of Daily Record type discourse.

I would now like to recommend that CQN split into two sections, one that tries to live up to the strapline “not lazy journalism” and another that gives full vent to the tabloid, Big C, magical thinking, it’s a disgrace and an embarrassment, type of dialogue.

Sadly, I feel the attention seekers may not be satisfied with that twin track solution and would mistake it for bullying as they do seem a bit thin skinned about people not wishing to read them.

If we cannot resolve this issue of racing towards a tabloid/SSB version of CQN, can anyone tell me if Kerrydale Street is a Kojo/TSD free zone or do they have equivalents there too?

It’s full of precious little minds who don’t take kindly to folk like us

  11. Our goalie going up for a corner in the dying minutes of a cup tie, being lost, at home, to a lower division side, is desperate.

The fact that he didn’t have the cojones to make that decision himself but stood , skulking about the centre circle, looking to the bench for permission to go up, tells you much more.

Our new, very gifted centre back being used as an auxiliary centre forward, with our best dead ball passer being utilised to deliver 60 yard diagonal punts up the park to him, is desperate. The fact that our new, 30 goal a season, £2M+ striker never looked like ever getting near to him or his knock ons, tells you much more.

The fact that we had 27 corners and only once, Lustig header deep into extra time, had an attempt on goal from them, is desperate. The fact that two out of our three, rested but now pressed into action because their replacements were useless, playmakers conspire to throw a throw out out for a throw to the opposition tells you much more.

We were rubbish last night; these occasions occur. Fair play and congratulations to Morton. Tactically sound and fair, solid, eye on the ball tackling, without recourse to any roughhouse shenanigans. The credit is all theirs.

Agree that it is too early to write players off but even after the initial annoyance after last night has worn off it is fair to start to make initial assessments of some of our newer players. Only one looks really good- Vergil- and all of the others show worrying trends. I am somebody who is proud to own up to writing off Henrik Larsson after his first two games and thought Chris Sutton would be a waste of money and will be happy to admit that I am wrong about Biton, Pukki, Derk etc at the end of this season. It’s part of the fun.

Big Jock’s worst cup result must have been the 0-2 home defeat to Dunfermline in the 1st round 1968. The Pars went on to win the cup and we bought Tommy Callachan shortly afterwards. We reached the final of EVERY other Scottish or League Cup between 64/65 and 74/75; that’s 21 finals out of 22, winning 13. Big Jock was not in charge when we lost the 64/65 League Cup final.

Good on you for helping out with history lessons relating to Lenny and last time Kilmarnock and Morton won at Paradise.

For me there a few more memorable events relating specifically to Lenny ‘s tenure as manager:

    Try

April 2012 and the last game Celts will ever play against a team called Rangers. 3-0 victory to send them packing into the history books.

    Or my personal favourite-

Manager Winning the first of a sequence of League titles that may run into the 10’s or scores.

    Or how about this one-

Leading the Celts into last 16 if the CL at his first attempt…

That’s the third time at that stage for Celts v the now-liquidated former rivals who can never improve that record

Of course Lenny can improve both Celts’ and his own personal record… almost at will…

The list will go on and on long after the 2nd liquidation event etc., etc.,

Enjoy and savour it fellow Celt ;-)

Come on we’re not talking about Barca or Juve here, it’s a team of part timers we were playing. That certainly suggests that the manager doesn’t fancy him.

Thats fair comment, however I was not happy with NL’s attitude or comments after the game,” I dont want to dwell on it” . Is that so Neil.

Supporters paid money and travelled and some of us will have to listen to this lot for years as believe me there are some proper Morton fans but there are many more who use it as a convenience Club rather than go to Ibrox.

Standing in the Home end last time we (Celtic)were at Cappielow verified my life long held view and experience,of this team and fans, and their intense dislike of Celtic and anyone associated,so pardon me if my applause is muted.

Regarding the 4 players mentioned ,fair enough to play them, however all 4 look very average, and against that defence the much criticised Rasmusson,or Murphy, would have been more effective than Pukki.

Sorry but Rogic and Derk too fragile, nae heart should not be here.

One would think after about the first twenty corners they would realise that wasn’t working.

Maybe they should have reverted to short corner kicks,or just attempt to score directly from them?

Charlie Tully probably would have scored about four goals from a tally of twenty seven corners.
