Lack of consistency haunts Celtic again

748

Celtic have been completely dominant in Scottish football on many occasions but only once did this result in a domestic treble (the treble was won another two occasions when Celtic were only marginally ahead of the competition but were ruthlessly focussed).

At all other times we have had a morning like this, tossed out of one of the cup competitions by a vastly over-performing team.  Little more than a handful of games against weaker opponents stood between us and a treble in each of the last two years, but as we have noted for many years now, Celtic are not consistent enough to win the treble.  The evidence is substantial.

There are parallel ways we should react to this.  In the middle of a Champions League campaign we should be focused on little else, players should be rested for the challenge ahead, even if there are resultant risks, but there will be disappointment that we didn’t see a recognisable performance from those drafted into the team.  It wasn’t until Matthews, Commons and Stokes arrived last night that we looked anything like the Celtic we know.  On no occasions should we lose at home to a Championship team looking for their first away win since April.

That domestic treble from a dominant position was achieved by Martin O’Neill in season 2000-01, a time when Martin scarcely made a substitution before 85 minutes, never mind rested players.  This drew criticism, of course, as his ‘feeder’ players were denied opportunities to grow.  Despite last night’s reversal I would still rather use these games to develop the wider squad.

I also don’t subscribe to the belief that ‘every game is a cup final’.  Motivational strategies lose effectiveness if you roll them out too often.

Credit to Allan Moore and his “boys with desire and work-rate”.

Booting the Huns off the forum would help, CQN might be a Celtic forum but it’s infested with Huns and people seem to think that’s ok but if you put in a wee sweary word in a comment there right into you about it.

Wake up and ban the Huns or the forum will be a joke like FF or RM

Haha, my dad told me a LOT about Charlie Tully. Was screaming myself hoarse last night at our players scared to attack the ball in their box or challenge for 50/50s. It had self preservation for Barca, written all over our team.

Don’t knock the passionate negativity it’s probably partially responsible for Lenny’s drive to the better results, if everybody was so easy with defeat as you it’s unlikely the club would be what we are.

  13. Morrissey the 23rd on

Apologies to all the posts that I’ve not had time to re-back, read and respond to over the last few days.

The good news is I got the job. The bad news is I would get more money by not working. Yip! The reality of that is mental and agreeing to that is perhaps even more mental. I’m hoping it’s a step in the right direction to get decent money for my labour.

Other news: I went to Celtic Park today and spoke to the lawyer who is dealing with the resolutions that I handed in to Celtic yesterday. I have agreed to keep some details of our conversation confidential but only for two days.

To give extra respect to the club that I love and support, I will do at least that. As it’s clear that my posts are read, I hope giving faith in my club to do the right thing is wise. How the Celtic board react regarding this issue will speak volumes. Not just to me but to the wider Celtic support.

  14. Hun skelper,

I would imagine 99% of the guys on here are Celtic fans. However I find it laughable that any Celtic fan that can’t take criticism of the manager, club, CEO or players and resorts to calling Celtic supporters Huns is usually sitting in his armchair reading the Celtic View with green tinted specs on.

Constructive criticism of the manager or pointing out his failures ( systemic defeats against part time opposition ) is a topic of conversation for many of us.

When I meet fans like yourself or setting free the bears I smile at your breathtaking naivety that all things in the Celtic universe are great.

Celtic have seriously underperfomed in winning trophies in the last 3 years.

We have mismanaged the transfer window and weakened the team.

The coaching staff are very limited.

Celtic will never get to the next level with Lenny as manager.

I am a Celtic man to the core and I dont rate him.

  19. Belated thoughts on last night

    1) Progress is never linear

    1) We have a motivational issue when playing wee teams we expect to beat

    2) Dylan unlucky to be hooked

    3) Teams are now getting wise to our reliance on set pieces. Block the set piece threat & you curtail our effectiveness …this needs addressed for our Euro campaign

    4) We are more likely to lose when Rogic plays – fact

    5) We stumbled past Elfsborg and Karagandy, and we still fail to attack the ball in the box. Last night shouldn’t be a surprise

    7) putting crosses into the box for a 5’10” forward versus two big centre backs and a goalie who comes off his line, is madness …same story as our set pieces

We need a striker who will go in where it hurts.

On Saturday, I would give Balde a run, purely to see what he can do.

  20. gallowgate mad squad on

I feel that Virgil and Ambrose are our flair players! Both of them must beat more men than any other player. Virgil looks a class act, and when you see Ambrose, he really does link the defence and midfield well. Only problems with Ambrose are that he is maybe not strong enough for a centre back, and he will get caught bringing the ball out of defence by an intelligent team now and again.

However, if he’s wearing a four leaf clover on his breast……….

  23. OK, so we lost last night, well done Morton and good luck for the rest of the competition.

Things were tried last night and they failed, but better to do so in our 5th tier tournament (behind the U19 development league in my opinion) than to be experimenting in something more important.

Last week I stood with my son in Torre 3 Verde in the San Siro and watched a Scottish club not only compete with, but at times play a top Italian side off the park. Fair enough we never turned the good play into goals and points, but for the 1st time since the Lions, a top class Italian side were made to look second best against a team from Scotland.

For the true Celtic fans already writing off Pukki, Biton, Boerrigter and Balde, get a grip, it’s early days for these guys and our squad is far stronger this year than last, with a much greater depth in quality.

For the hunterlopers, sevconians and supporters of the former deid club who will be intent on responding negatively to this post please don’t bother, I will have my fingers in my ears humming Zadoc the priest and dreaming of our forthcoming forays in the CL.

Totally agree, Virgil and Efe oozed confidence last night, whilst the majority of their team mates looked the opposite.
