Ladbrokes SPFL-PR warning media to stop title stripping talk

1623

I’m told by a broadcast journalist friend that Jim Traynor, of PR company Level5, started Newco Rangers broadcast media conference yesterday with a warning to journalists that discussion about title stripping was off limits.

The law was that if manager Mark Warburton was asked about the proposed sanction for Oldco Rangers financial doping the conference would be stopped.

Say what you like about journalists, but they regard being told what to ask, or not to ask, as a line in the sand issue. Traynor, a journalist for decades, should have known better than to make such a rookie mistake.

He was told that attempts to subvert discussion about Oldco being stripped of titles is not something that would be accommodated. By the broadcast media, anyway.

Warburton was subsequently asked about title stripping and although he was happy to answer, I’m told, this angered the would-be news-denier, whereupon he “lost his temper”.

Post-conference there was a bit of chat about how they would be able to appropriately report on less-partisan issues, like the Level5 PR-controlled Ladbrokes SPFL, although there was a consensus that “He’ll fall out with everyone soon enough. He always does”.

  1. HT won’t be in Dingwall due to the mad KO time, would entail a 2 night stay over and the wounds are too fresh ,you enjoy. H H Hebcelt

  2. What should happen and what will happen are very seldomly the same thing unfortunately- especially for CFC fans

Today the board should have convened a meeting by phone and taken the decision to relieve our amateur coach of his responsibilities.

They then should have started the process of recruiting a proper professional manager with the relevant and requisite skills set.

Unfortunately they probably gave last night’s hapless and pathetic performance no consideration at all!

The great experiment needs to be curtailed as soon as possible however it probably will be allowed to stagger on through no doubt another couple of substandard performances in the remaining EL games. Then no doubt RD will be allowed to roll over the rest of the dross in Scotland and then presented with yet another attempt at CL qualification.

If that happens we will all be back here next season talking about the same thing things!

Ronnie might be a lovely fellow but he will never be a CFC manager in a month of Sunday’s!

The really sad thing about last night was its predictability.

We have now seen the same movie several times but our coach never learns the lessons.

He reminds me of those First World War generals sending the PBI over the top time after time, with the same result! Everyone slaughtered in the first 60 seconds!

Against a team that he knew would sit in deep and hit on the break his team walked – cos they sure as hell never ran anywhere – in to the trap.

When a 40 year old never has been strolls around CP as if he owns it and throws in a goal for good measure – you know something is rotten in the state of Denmark- as Willie Shakespoke would say!

As I said heynckes won the European cup as manager of Real Madrid in 1998; their first success in the competition in 32 years and was immediately sacked.

So if he gets the sack after that then can people be surprised if Ronny is deemed not good enough on account of the performances in Europe, regardless of celtic’s dominance in Scotland?

Sometimes clubs look at what they think is the bigger picture when such decisions are made.

  4. Can’t help feeling that if Ronny wants to persist with his full backs overlapping, that we would be better deploying a back 3. How often in recent times domestically, and more often in Europe have we been counter attacked with our 2 centre halves caught 25 yards apart?

  5. Joe Filippis Haircut on

We won the SPL and the League cup last season we are currently top of the SPL by 6 points in the semi final of the League cup still in the Scottish cup and we can still qualify from our Europa Group. So we certainly must have a poor manager some of you Bhoys dont wont know what you have until you drive the man out.Come on get behind the manager the team and the club.H.H.

“Sftb I take it that you were being ironic by offering to give £1k to charity if I could find a post that proclaimed you were a better supporter than anyone else. HH”

Seeing as you are being cryptic here, I will have to interpret. I am assuming that it is in reference to the large amount that means I am again(?) taking a superior attitude, lording how much I can afford to lose.

However, there is an alternative interpretation that may have escaped you but it is the one I intended to convey. That is, that I cannot afford to give £1000 to charity (and you omitted the phrase I used which was “charity of your choice” as any sort of light gesture. It was just that I was so confident of my ground, that I had never made any such pronouncement, that I could have written £10m as I would never have to pay it, because you had no evidence for your assertion.

It would be just as easy for me to accuse you of taking a superior tone, presenting yourself as a superior supporter, because you are asserting that your methods are more beneficial to Celtic and my attitude drags them down. That’s nothing if not proclaiming yourself better.

But I make no such tiresome assertion. You and I have different views, that is all. Neither of us makes things happen at CP as a result of expressing those views as neither of us is that influential.

So you can stow the accusations becaue, until such time as we have a Sugar Daddy to bankroll a “speculate to accumulate” approach, your views on improving Celtic can not be proven or disproven. I remain confident that they would be disastrous. If it was such a common sense approach, there would be a raft of clubs following that route.

    Where are they?

  8. I am not interested in discussing the latest crises in NewCo. Celtic have enough issues to keep me busy.

One of the rules in baseball is three strikes and you are out. Applying this to our managerial situation, the question becomes, “Has RD had his three strikes?” There is certainly an argument to be made that he has. Two attempts at the CL last year and one this year, all failures. Defeat to a mediocre Italian team in the knock-out stage of the Europa Cup, and very likely elimination from this years competition. All of the above against well organised but not top tier opposition. Often it is not just the fact that we lost, but it is the manner in which we lose. Do you remember the glorious defeats of the recent past against MU, Barcelona, Milan and, sadly, Porto? Who would have thought that we would long for those kinds of defeat? Adding it all up it represents a strong argument that it is time for a change.

I am not going to go over RD’s faults… these have been documented already. However, I am going to agree with a previous poster who indicated that (s)he liked the idea of Ronnie but not the Ronnie that we have.

We have all met people like Ronnie…great at interviews, knows all the current thinking, charming, a good talker. Trouble is, many of these folks cannot deliver when the chips are down.

I am not in the camp that blames PL for this appointment. RD is a good seminar leader and a nice fellow. His behind the scenes re-organising of the club is spot-on, and overdue. These are big positives. However, there is little sign that he has developed the essential ability to read a game and make needed adjustments. In short RD seems to be the right man in the wrong job.

  10. HT-I said the same about the second half, too many going through the motions,or that might have been Ciftci at full pelt…………….another dud striker for the collection.HH

  11. H/T,

My thoughts exactly. Why and who would be the leaders? If so, they must be shown the door, even if they have a water-tight contract. At the very least, they cannot be allowed to play in the first team. We aren’t as bad as we played in the second half. It wasn’t simply an offnight. Too many simply were posted missing. They didn’t try a lleg. Imo, that is much worse than the school boy errors that marked the first leg.

  12. 50 shades of green on

Right folks nearly calmed down from last night thanks to a couple of Guinness, still bloody angry though at that second half performance.

How come with all they Norwegian players on the pitch the one in hoops was technically inept whilst the others were fine?

How come we had a left back that looked out of place ( well compared to the other defenders he was the only one who knew how to play )?

Why did our manager choose Blackett over Efe or was that hobsons choice?

AND WHY IS WEE SHADES TELLING ME IT’S TIME UP FOR RONNY?

  13. the glorious balance sheet on

    Joe filippi

Yep we are top of the league.

League cup, played 2, won 2, 1 of which was v lower league opposition.

Scottish cup, we haven’t kicked a ball in that yet.

Chance to qualify out the EL group? A very long shot, let’s face it, it’s hugely unlikely to happen. Didn’t you yourself earlier say it was as likely as you winning the euro millions tonight? :)

His European record against full time opponents is played 20, won 4, lost 9. For 23, against 36. Played 5 2 legged ties, won 1 lost 4.

A 20 per cent success rate.

In 15 of those 20 matches we were the higher ranked team.

At least 2 goals lost in our last 6 European games.

No wins in our last 9 Europa league games.

The trend does not look good if you’re searching for signs of improvement or progress.

Some people on here are calling the guy a dud, that’s plain wrong, he has had success in Norway.

But i think he has repeatedly come up short against moderate opposition in Europe. So in my view not a dud but not showing enough to be entrusted with next season’s European campaign.

  14. Ronny will stay until at least the end of this season, unless we suffer a catastrophic collapse in league form between now and then. Personally i’m still backing him but something has to change. What this team needs is some leadership, experience and character on the pitch. Buying young players with sell on potential is all well and good but you cannot put a price on know-how, nous, and experience. See Marcus Rosenburg for example. A couple of wise heads who have been there and done at European level would make a big difference. I’m thinking a central defender and a midfielder for starters. We just seem to go to pieces as soon as we hit a bump in the road.

  15. Makes me laugh to see that so many supposed Celtic supporters have such a downer on the club when we lose a match in Europe. Seems like we need a new board, scouting team, coaching team, players, you name it. European football is a bonus for us now, even with the recent over achievements. We are where we are because we play in Scotland

  16. Amazing the amount of Celtic supporters….cough, cough….that are not interested on what’s going on with the cheats…….they are more concerned about what’s going on at Celtiic………… No your not, your just board haters and the odd couple of Huns tossed in, who you trying to kid?

  17. Parkheadcumsalford

The thing is Ronny’s persistence in playing what I consider to be suicide football in Europe has to be taken into account.

If the players weren’t trying hard enough we need to ask why that is.

THE GLORIOUS BALANCE SHEET. My point is that we should wait until the end of the season before we review the managers position or we may be throwing the baby out with the bath water. H.H/

  19. Amazing the number of (cough, cough) uber Tims who’d prefer to talk about a deid mob than talk about Celtic. You’d be forgiven for thinking they were agenda driven, or possibly it’s just bitterness.

I was on there website this morning, it’s the only website related to Celtic that has NOT ONE THING. About the Huns cheating on taxes, not ONE article, unless it’s been updated? Plent of begging for shares to get a represent on the board, which is there right, it’s there site, not a thing about the Huns, so it’s obviously that story does not suit them? I could be wrong.

I also agree with TD67 we are taking the MSM focus of the Cheating huns as they love our in fighting if you think im wrong just watch tonights news. I call for us again to get behind the manager the team and the club. H.H.

No offence pal but winning against the rest of the dross in Scotland should not cloud our judgement!

You or me could win the league in Scotland given how poor the opposition are and how much more we have to spend!

We knew that Wattie was crap even while he was doing their tainted nine because in Europe year in year out he was exposed tome and time again.

That’s what’s happening with Ronnie – he has had 3 transfer windows to put together a team and we are going backwards at an alarming rate!

Molde are a very very average team yet we made them look like a CL team!

Mr Stein always said don’t ask players to do things they are not capable of – Ronnie persists with playing players out of position.

Last night proved yet again that Bitton and Johansen are never defensive midfielders.

That leaves a huge gap right in front of our defence and makes poor players look even worse!

Last time we won the Treble we had two excellent holding players in the team – Lenny and Lambo – yet we still scored plenty at the other end!

Armstrong is never a wide player yet was stuck out there.

The lad Simunovic should never have started and the idea of Bitton as CB was bizarre!

The list could go on and on

Time’s up – lets get a real manager next time !

  25. As for some Tims having an agenda, and being bitter against the Huns, you got me, I hate everything they stand for, every player who played for them, and every time we are mentioned with the, but I’ll always be vigilant with them every time they get up to something, but that’s me, makes me a bad Tim? A kin live wi that.

Croppybhoy. No offence taken you are entitled to your point of view im not going to keep repeating why we struggled last night in my opinion ( if you are intrested you can read back ). I am happy to continue with Ronny and review the situation at the end of the season.H.H.

  27. H/T,

You may be right but, imo, it doesn’t justify too many not seeming to try. There may be no apparent Plan B to supplant a suicidal Plan A but it still does not absolve players from not making an effort, as too many seemed to cave in in the second half.

I agree with you that perspective is required. However i don’t think we can hide behind the ‘playing in Scotland’ excuse, as much as the standard in this county is rubbish. Last night was a shambles and simply not good enough for Celtic.

  29. Why would you talk about another team, seriously? You honestly want to go there? I think you had better read your constitution again, you’s the guys who are the voice of the Celtic fans, and you have no comment on that? Aye right.

  30. mike in toronto on

In spite of giving up more than 2 goals a game, I dont think the defence is our biggest problem …. I think it is the lack of movement and support from the forwards and midfielders that is making the defence look bad …

how many times last night were our mids and forwards stationary, flat footed, and yet still gave the ball away ridiculously easily …. allowing Molde to break quickly …. I am thinking of the NB red card … okay, our central defenders were posted missing … but in fairness to them, we were trailing, the game was winding down, and we had to push forward a bit …. and they should be able to rely upon teammates to do basic things like hold or pass the ball…. but the turnover that lead to that break was woeful ….

I’ll accept that our defence ddn’t cover themselves in glory last night (except the young bhoy) …. but as for the rest, the defence were no worse than, and in fact were not helped by, the midfielders and defenders…..

we win as a team, and we lose as a team … and last night, while woeful, the defence had plenty of company in that respect last night….

  31. JFH-Given Ronny’s results in Europe, would you trust him with next year’s CLQ’s? we need to change now IMO,give a guy the January window to sort this mess out HH
