Ladbrokes SPFL-PR warning media to stop title stripping talk

1623

I’m told by a broadcast journalist friend that Jim Traynor, of PR company Level5, started Newco Rangers broadcast media conference yesterday with a warning to journalists that discussion about title stripping was off limits.

The law was that if manager Mark Warburton was asked about the proposed sanction for Oldco Rangers financial doping the conference would be stopped.

Say what you like about journalists, but they regard being told what to ask, or not to ask, as a line in the sand issue. Traynor, a journalist for decades, should have known better than to make such a rookie mistake.

He was told that attempts to subvert discussion about Oldco being stripped of titles is not something that would be accommodated. By the broadcast media, anyway.

Warburton was subsequently asked about title stripping and although he was happy to answer, I’m told, this angered the would-be news-denier, whereupon he “lost his temper”.

Post-conference there was a bit of chat about how they would be able to appropriately report on less-partisan issues, like the Level5 PR-controlled Ladbrokes SPFL, although there was a consensus that “He’ll fall out with everyone soon enough. He always does”.

I think I saw Gazza at Central Station today with a fishing rod and a rotisserie chicken in a tesco bag.

The question is did he go East or West when he left the Station?

You don’t stick up for the club, you just machine gun out the usual inane barbs at the usual targets on an internet blog – the Celtic Trust, the people in the “North East corner of the stadium” as you put it – they all get it somewhere in the region of 80 times a day on here from you.

Same old smash day in, day out.

So you’ll excuse me for being tickled by you telling anyone to stop the broken record routine. You’re the worst offender on this blog for saying the same thing day in, day out.

I hope that has earned me a GIRUY for my troubles.

  5. 50 Shades of Green,

    Here are the choices

    – Lawwell is a real Celtic man taking care of the fans, developing the Football Club and continuing its charitable foundation. At the same time ensuring the compensation of all from the CEO downwards is linked to football success and financial performance which are not mutually exclusive.

    – Lawwell is a shark. Ensuring he has his full package and bonus as no 1 objective. Screw the workers and minimum wage. Eradicate the Irish element of the club. Aid and abet the jailing of innocent young Celtic fans. Downsize. Find a puppet in the Internet to pass his message as Celtic fans desert the SMSM.

Of course it is option 1 as Lawwell is playing for the jersey.

  7. BRTH,

Found myself nodding in agreement with much of what you write.

The bit about the non executive directors saddened me most.

My ongoing concern is that we cannot buy success by bringing in the likes of Hartson and Sutton. Until now, imo, the only viable option we have is the current one of bringing in young players, who we will allow to go to the EPL if they get the offer.

As far as I can see our only alternative is playing a team of young Scots, who might play for the jersey. But, I suspect that the best of them will want to go to the EPL to better themselves. Plenty of our home grown best players have done exactly that over the years, like Daglish, Hay and Macari, of the Quality Street Gang, potentially an even better team than the Lions.

    Paul/others

    Some food for thought.

There is a HUGE difference in our European performances when we have our first choice central defenders playing.

Taking our preferred pairings as Virgil Van Dijk – Jason Denayer, followed by Virgil Van Dijk – Dedryck Boyata and then Jozo Simunovic – Dedryck Boyata, I have analysed the results under Ronny.

Starting with Maribor which was the first game after Jason Denayer joined, we have played 20 games.

    With first choice CBs:

    P14, W5, D6, L3, Conceded 18

    Without first choice CBs:

    P6, W1, D1, L4, Conceded 13

If you factor in the Inter away game and the Molde home game (both games 0-0 when one of our CBs left the field), the difference is even more pronounced:

    With first choice CBs:

    P12, W5, D6, L1, Conceded 15

    Without first choice CBs:

    P8, W1, D1, L6, Conceded 16

So we are only conceding just over a goal per game with our first choice CBs, compared with two per game without them. The only game we have won without our first choice CB pairing is Stjarnan at home when Charlie Mulgrew deputised for the suspended Virgil Van Dijk.

We have only once conceded more than two in a game with our first choice pairing – Inter at home, when our keeper had two howlers.

We have three months to see if Jozo and Dedryck can form a solid partnership. If not we need to get someone in in January. And it wouldn’t hurt to have a better backup CB.

  12. BRT&H @ 7:05pm,

Excellent post, sums up my feelings almost entirely.

When I watched the gameplay and saw OJS adopt a few of the classics from the master, everything from attempting to maximise bookings, sending offs of your opponent to last minute substitutions to wind the clock down, it struck me how honest Celtic play under Ronny.

Molde were far Wilier than us. If Ronny wants to be less cynical and play the game the Glasgow Celtic way, they had better get a lot better at Footall.

Then I looked at Tierney’s performance and thought, we have a player there, a real silver lining on a cloudy night. But then I thought, I’ve seen hundreds of players perform like that in the hoops, I’ve seen eleven Celts perform like that in unison as a team, that’s what Celtic’s about. Then I realised although I saw a bright young Lhad, putting in a special performance playing for the hoops, I saw at least eleven that didn’t.

    Hail Hail

  13. Good evening friends.

    ** LAST MAN STANDING 5 – WEEK 6**

The hopes and dreams of the 15 remaining (ahem) Standers lie with the following teams –

Leicester (at home to Watford) – 7

Manchester Utd (at home to West Brom) – 4

Hearts (at home to Hamilton) – 3

Dundee (at home to Partick) – 1

So whilst we could have a winner this weekend I think it’s much more likely that all 15 might remain on their feet.

  14. About the BTC, I don’t think there’s any possibility of an appeal. Apart from the other reasons given by various posters, there’s the main theme of the three law lords judgement. Income for work done is assessable for income tax: common sense.

The law lords gave us back some hope that maybe the law wasn’t so daft after all. Any lawyer arguing against their finding would need to establish that law has no basis in common sense.

Spot on with that. Two experienced players would make a big difference.

The first goal away to Molde was absolutely schoolboy stuff. If we had had an experienced DM sitting back the goal wouldn’t have happened. Or an experienced CB shouting at Izzy to not go so far forward.

The third goal wasn’t much better. Four players drawn out left and Lustig left to cover the middle, with nobody covering RB.

Wondered about somebody like a Scott Parker. Doesn’t really matter – just a couple of tactically-aware players.

  18. I see cqn resident idiot and proud (without the savant) is still telling people they are idols and that he doesn’t care.

Whether he is or not, he won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

I received some really kind comments and a bit of enjoyable Mickey taking as I had been eating Caramel Wafers at the time. Anyway I was at the Western today and it transpires I have a medicine allergy. Anadin, Diclofenic, Naproxen and a good few more. So nothing to do with the Caramel Wafers.

My decision to posit an argument for the case against title stripping was not well received. I don’t court popularity. I will always express an honest opinion without fear or favour. It’s important to stress that I do not condone cheating. My argument was that by focusing on title stripping, those who engaged in tax evasion may escape Scot free. Everyone who received an EBT should be forced to repay to the exchequer the tax that they evaded. Everyone who administered the EBT loans should be banned from holding office in Scottish Football. Anyone who was a non-executive director, as was the case with Paul Murray and Dave King, should also be banned from Scottish football. Their silence makes them complicit. I trust that HMRC will pursue SDM first. He owes 53% of £6m, which is £3.18m. Barry Ferguson owes £1.325m. Employer’s national insurance of 13.8% was evaded. This should be pursued via BDO.

All the pundits in the Scottish game, like Neil McCann, who are compromised, should have their contracts rescinded.

Title stripping in itself will not provide the apposite restitution.

I am a pragmatist. My solution is achievable. Title stripping punishes those who did not engage in this artifice, including the honest men and women behind the scenes and the supporters who had no idea what was going on. SDM controlled the media and used individuals such as James Traynor to pour scorn on Hugh Adam’s honest words. The complicity of the media in this debacle should not be overlooked.

The guilty should be punished. They should be hit hard in their pockets.

Think of our club as a European club as opposed to a Scottish club from a backwater league.

    That should reset your mind.

We go into European season each year knowing we have perhaps 2 qualifying rounds. 4 games then possibly another qualifier depending on the result of that. We are in the top half of the draw for all of these games. Seeded. Our turnover outstrips the teams we meet in those qualifiers. I can’t think of any team we have met or could have met since the champions route to the champions league was established who had a higher turnover.

When we reach the group stages our turnover, ticket price, attendances, sponsorship etc are higher than probably 90% of the teams in all groups.

We play 6 games in the Europa or Champions League Group stages. If we qualify as we did last year that’s an additional 2 games. Think of it as 10 to 12 games a season in Europe. That’s over a quarter of a Scottish League season. If you have Internationals in the side they are playing a further 6 games or so per season against higher class opposition. This idea that we are a Scottish team in a crap league doesn’t wash. Play as a European side who belong in Europe and use the SPL. As a breeding ground for talent and practice for Europe.
