Lady luck, £5m decision, HMRC

203

Sion had their elimination coming, totally banged to rights.  Legia made a stupid mistake which came to light after two of the most impressive and important victories in their recent history.  Football can be a cruel game.  I’m genuinely gutted for them.

Notwithstanding that, after we read the rules and found precedents the outcome was not in doubt.  Unlike fielding an ineligible player, fielding a suspended player brings an automatic forfeit verdict.

For the record, it wasn’t Celtic who drew Uefa’s attention to the error, we played no part in Legia’s misfortune.

Having stayed long enough to see ‘the winning substitution’ I’m not confident of progressing beyond the play-off round with the squad as it is, but this decision guarantees us four home gates and the best part of £3.5m from Uefa from the next round and (at least) the Europa League.  That’s circa £5m extra into the budget this morning.

Ronny’s going to need every penny.  This could be a transformational moment.

Can we briefly speak about HMRC?  They will lose the next appeal, which, like earlier deliberations, takes place in Scotland, but they will win the final appeal, to the Supreme Court, in London – because it’s in London.

HMRC are right to appeal, aggressive tax avoidance schemes rob the poor.  I am confident justice will eventually out, but not in a Scottish court.

On another subject……  watch how the Uefa verdict is interpreted elsewhere in Glasgow.  For the first time in history, cognitive dissonance is close to taking physical form.  This one was dumb luck, nothing more.

Aye, but what is rarely mentioned is that, Rangers 12th man(not the mib) won that final for them in Barcelona by, invading the pitch ‘four’ times and intimidating the Russian team.

Only SMSM person that I’ve ever heard describing their ‘victory’ in such a manner was my hero, no, not Kojo and The Singing Detective….hunskelper extraordinaire – Gerry McNee.

    Hail Hail

  2. Borgo67,

It will never get over turned, remember Sion and all the fight they tried to put up, got them nowhere, i think they ended up with further sanctions and or fines.

Maribor are regular contributors to the UEFA coffers————-chanting , politics , fireworks etc

  7. We have until Monday night to sign players for CL fixture v Maribor on 19/20 Aug (plus 1 up to 24 hrs before tie).

    Make it happen Celtic !!!

Also worth remembering that Legia have appealed the decision

He’s Italian mate, he always does the draw, it was a quote from the beginning of the draw, I posted it so the doubters would stop doubting we were back…

  9. Tom McLaughlin. You are correct. We need to find a way to get rid of DD too. Perhaps by threatening the value of his investment.

I feel terrible for Legia today. Will celtic take advantage of this and add to the team ahead of the qualifier?

Yeah that’s what I think too,,,,

  10. Legia are appealing

SSN – they say it’s a basic human error and punishment disproportionate

  11. Take your luck when you’re getting it.

We were deprived of Champions league participation for many years and the money that would have brought by blatant cheating from the Huns. However we need players badly.

  12. playing a SUSPENDED player is a huge mistake… not a chance of getting the decision overturned

  13. 3 years ago we all laughed at the orcs getting eliminated by Maribor. A crowd of nobodies we said.

Now we have our own fans worried about playing them.

    Something not right here.

Second chances are hard to come by. wasting them is unforgivable.

  14. Maribor look like the like to squeeze things in the middle and set up attacks from the wings. Their defence don’t look like they keep a good line.

  15. glendalystonsils on

Maribor are nae mugs. Put out Wigan last season according to SSN. They will be just as tough as Legia.

    PL take note!

  16. Edinburgh Evening News claiming the tie v Maribor will be played at Murrayfield.

We play Dundee United at Celtic Park a week on Saturday in the league. Why would Celtic Park then be out of commission 10 days later?

  17. Good morning CQNers

Isn’t it good to be a Celtic supporter this fine day.

After all the gnashing of teeth and buckets full of tears yesterday, we find ourselves saved by Administration….unlike our former neighbours on the South Side who perished by Administration and Liquidation.

Where now all those grinning smug huns who crawled out of the woodwork for the first time in 30 months yesterday?

I have some sympathy for Zbysek and his fellow Legia fans but we have been on the wrong end of decisions ourselves in the past. So we feel your pain.

Celtic in the shape of Ronni Deila and Peter Lawwell must get their ars** in gear now and ensure that no matter the result of the Maribor tie (and I feel quite confident the debacles in Warsaw and Edinburgh will let them wake up and smell the coffee) we are properly prepared on and off the field for the big challenges ahead in the SPFL and Europe for the rest of the season.

It’s always good being a Tim but especially so today when we have been given a lifeline from a very unlikely source.

    Hail Hail

  18. We wont be awarded any co efficient points for Warsaw as the decision today seen us go through on the away goal rule …….. and whats this with going back to Murrayfield …….. ? if the away leg is first then surley CP will be ready for the home tie ……… no ?

  19. Ronny manager of the month.

    Well done, checked the register.

Think it is a stay of execution as players don’t seem to be responding to the teaching methods.

Hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.

Appears to be no motivation on the park.

    Who is to blame ?

Obviously the whole of Scotland will be delighted with the news as it helps the coefficient

The news channels will be euphoric in their positive reporting – Scottish football particularly Campbell Ogilvy and the SFA will be dancing in the corridors of Hampden

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

But, of course…..why would they NOT be …..hahahaha

  26. As far as I was aware the Murrayfield thing meant we had to play all our games there, possibly it was just all the qualifying games but it could have been them all as that was the stadium we registered.

  27. Well I’ll say one thing for Ronnie, he certainly seems to benefit from that vital ingredient…fortitude.

I am confident that we will fall in the play off because it is a trait of human nature for the players to be rather sheepish about being on the pitch (even if this is subconscious). Furthermore, Ronnie can’t turn a Lada into a Rolls Royce in a matter of days. But it’s back to 0-0 and you cannae help but hope.

Whatever the outcome against Maribor, it is guaranteed group stage footie in some competition or other and that buys Ronnie some time and hopefully some funds.

    An outrageous stroke of fortune.

  28. Great to see wee Declan Sanchez has been given the goals from the other night –

    *****************************************************************************************

CELTIC has invented a fictional hero to take credit for the three goals it never scored.

The club was awarded a completely made-up 3-0 Champions League qualifying victory over Legia Warsaw after the Polish team accidentally fielded an invincible football robot for two minutes of injury time.

Now the Glasgow club has honoured the achievement by awarding the goals to the fictional attacking midfielder, Declan Sanchez.

A club spokesman said: “Declan is a working class boy from Galway whose grandfather was an Argentinian human rights activist and a close friend of Che Guevara.

“Declan joined Celtic at the age of seven after being spotted by Kenny Dalglish, adopted by Charlie Nicholas and trained by Henrik Larsson. When he is not creating and scoring magnificent goals he writes poetry about imperialist oppression.

“And he has the voice of an angel.”

  29. HAIL! HAIL!

Don’t know what all the moaning’s about. They broke the rules

    so that’s that…YNWA! END OF STORY…

  30. For what iam led to believe, the 3 minutes he was on the pitch is irrelevant.

The fact he was on the team sheet was enough for him to be in contravention of the rules!.
