Larsson, Lennon and Brown

Friday is the 8th annual Celtic Quick News Open.  The event, in which our guest speaker will be Livingston FC Manager and former Celt John Hughes, is completely booked up with a record 54 golfers. In addition to playing golf and having fun the CQN Open raises funds for good causes

Our good causes this year are The Haven Centre in Blantyre, Oscar Knox Neuroblastoma Appeal, Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and Aberdour Primary School Parents’ Association.

We have already distributed over £2000 thanks to the sale of a Joseph Gormley painting back in April. We have two further fantastic paintings by Joseph; one of Scott Brown and one of Henrik Larsson. We also have a wonderful signed Neil Lennon print by the artist Gary Brandham.

The items are being raffled on ebay right now for the price of a £1 ticket. Winners will be drawn at the CQN Open on Friday night. There will be further raffles and auctions on Friday night with some excellent golfing and other sporting activities been donated by the Celtic family. Perhaps the pick is a limited edition canvas print of John Thomson, donated by the John Thomson Memorial Committee. There are only 22 of these in the entire world, representing the 22 years of John’s life.

This is a unique opportunity to win three great pieces of Celtic memorabilia, items which would normally be pushed out of the reach of most people at auction. Tickets cost £1, buy as many as you like, but participate. This is what your club is all about!

Many congratulations to Sean Fallon on his 90th birthday. I am delighted his autobiography is currently being written. Sean is our last remaining link to huge parts of our history. He was there, participating in the decision process, on so many of the things we now take for granted. The research, preparation and publicity surrounding his autobiography will be an opportunity to make sure younger generations get to appreciate the great resource he is. Let’s hope we get a CQN interview one day.

Sighs of relief will be heard around many dens of iniquity as Rangerstaxcase sails into the sunset; well done on excellent work. RTC’s “99% crap” has teased, entertained and informed for over a year. History is already being rewritten, but the inescapable fact is that Rangers diaspora were far better served by RTC than by the army of cheerleaders Sir David Murray or Craig Whyte depended upon to make their work possible.

The ‘buy lots of raffle tickets’ message if for you, b.t.w. so what are you waiting on, they are only £1 each!!!

    Monaghan1900 – James Bond stuff, I know. But you know what………if Bond was a fan of a fitbaw team, you can guarantee it would be the most Quintessentially British Club in the land.”

    Really?

    Let’s review the evidence:

    James Bond was:

    * based on men who fought in WW2, not men who hid in the shipyards

    * not the product of a consanguineous marriage

    * not fat or bald

    * gainfully employed

    * not mentally impaired

    * able to speak the Queen’s English

    So, I can’t see any evidence that Bond would have been a Sevco fan, unless there’s a film or book I’m unaware of where Bond goes undercover as a toothless, uneducated miscreant with a penchant for cheap booze and public urination.

    Perhaps they’re thinking of the chubby Scottish character from the Austin Powers series of films. (thumbsup)

    SOFIA, July 31 (Reuters) – Bulgarians Ludogorets have complained to UEFA about incidents that occurred during their 3-2 defeat in Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League second qualifying round second leg on Wednesday.

    Ludogorets, who won their maiden league title last season, said club officials were the victims of racial abuse and offensive chants while cups of beer and other objects were thrown at them in the main stand of the Maksimir stadium.

    The Bulgarians, knocked out 4-3 on aggregate, also accused German referee Felix Zwayer of favouring their Croatian opponents.

    Ludogorets said their Brazilian midfielder Marcelinho was wrongly sent off 12 minutes after the break while Dinamo’s Sammir should have received a red card for elbowing an opponent a few minutes later.

    The team, who have received the backing of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU), also said Zwayer unnecessarily added eight minutes of injury time.

    “The BFU respectfully insists UEFA … instigate disciplinary proceedings against Dinamo … on the basis of a protest that has been lodged by Ludogorets,” the BFU said in a letter sent to European soccer’s governing body. 4. I was at the game mentioned on the last thread, when Sean played with his arm in a sling.

    I was also in the Jungle for a game against them.

    Sammy Baird, a talented inside left, with the freedom to hack with impunity, had just clogged a Celtic player.

    Sean took off in a direct, diagonal run from the left back position and didn’t stop until he ran through Big Sammy.

    The squeal was plainly heard in the Jungle as the miscreant lay writhing on the turf.

    I met the great man at Celtic Park, when he stepped up during Big Jock’s convalescence.

    A gentleman.

    Happy birthday, Sean.

  5. What would it take in order to legally ensure that the new Rangers cannot quote oldco history? e.g. 54 (and falling). If it takes a legal challenge to stop them displaying the old honours I will gladly contribute to pay for that.

    I personally cannot wait to play the new lot, but we must ensure that the record books state that any trophy they win in future is their first.

    I notice that Goian is the latest player to come out today to say he wants to play for Newco in D3. Just weeks ago he was quoted as saying he wouldn’t play in D3. Newco have signed Ian Black on reported 5K weekly and according to rumour has told his former Hearts team mates that he expects to be in SPL top flight next season. Likewise, Newco are reported to be moving to sign Dean Shields and had Beattie training with them previously, According to Gregory Loannidis tweets (Sammi’s Greek lawyer) Newco will also sign Kafes from AEK Athens and the player has been advised that Newco will be back in top flight next season. It doesn’t make much sence to me that such players are willing to play in D3 and spend minimum of 3 seasons outside SPL. Add the comments over weekend from Green & Malcolm Murray and it would appear that Newco are confident that they will be back in SPL next season after some sort of SPL reconstruction. Now I know that one should never believe anything from Green & Co, but given the SPL’s attempts to parachute Newco into SPL in first instance prior to the fans revolt, what chances do you think a similar campaign or negiotations are happening in the background about this? I can’t see how Newco can substain their business model in D3 by signing these players to such contracts! Could it have been SPL / SFA intentions since the D3 vote that no matter what league Newco entered (D1 or D3) the game is fixed to see them back in SPL next season?

  19. A very happy 4 score and 10 birthday to Sligo Bhoy, and Celtic legend, Sean Fallon! My ould faither, who’s 2 years younger than Sean, assures me that he (Sean) is the hardest tackling footballer he has ever seen in his life! Bone shuddering challenges, the likes of which he had never seen before, and is ever likely to see!

    One of my favourite Sean Fallon stories taken from George Connelly’s biography, ‘Celtic’s Lost Legend’, recounted by Davie Cattenach (the ould gits like me will know who I’m talking about): Cattenach tells how they beat the huns 3-1 in the Glasgow Cup Final (late 60s probably), and how he clattered Alex Macdonald in the first-half with a neck-high ‘tackle’ (!!) Macdonald was stretcherd off! At half-time Big Jock gave him dogs abuse! Seconds later Sean siddles over, pulls him aside, and says: “All right, Catt? That was one of the finest tackles I’ve ever seen in my life!”.

    I always remember from Bobby Lennoxs when he talked about the SC SF against Hibs in 1980 (5-0 to the good guys) in which George Best was playing for the Hibees. He said that after hitting 5 or 6 passes in which no Hibs player even attempted to get to, he turned to Bobby and shrugged and said can you swap jerseys with one of my team as I know somebody would be getting on the end of the passes.

    Point being, we have no CM with the ability to hit a killer pass, even though guys are making the runs.

    I am pretty sure any SFL side has to hand in 2 years notice before quitting the league. I am not against restructuring of the leagues per se, but if it is attempted for 2013-14 then we are going back full circle. It will have been arranged purely so SevCo ‘skip’ either 1 or 2 seasons in the lower leagues. For what its worth i am not so sure the SFL clubs will vote ‘yes’ anyway, especially after Green + McCoists recent outbursts
