Last night is going to hurt

383

Last night is going to hurt. Brendan will hurt, as will the players. As far as our European objectives for this season are concerned – remain involved beyond Christmas – it is close to meaningless, but it will not feel that way.

The players need to make that hurt work for them. Two weeks today, they face Anderlecht. The unpleasant taste of defeat should remain on the taste buds when we take the field in Brussels. This is our opportunity to cleanse the palate. Bottle the hurt, don’t let it escape, let the mood remain sombre.

Use it as a embryo of growth. Be sharper, fitter, more alert and clinical. Take the positives from last night, and there were some, and build on them.

Competitive football is ruthless. Players who reach the Champions League have all filtered through hundreds of iterations of selection and rejection. Last night will have brought the spectre of rejection closer to home than any of them experienced during the Invincible Experience.

If they perform as they can, they will win in Brussels. Do that, and they will justifiably feel better about their place in the great football food chain.

Spare a thought today for others who delighted in our demise last night. The morning after is when they will have realised that defeat just means we redouble our efforts to improve.

Pitch Invader

Oh, and the pitch invader: sue him for whatever fine Uefa impose.  It was a mindless attempted assault.  The reputational damage to Celtic fans from this type of action is incalculable, which the club must show concern for.  The consequences are never appropriately served on the offender.  Let them act with apparent impunity (a ban is irrelevant to some) and you let them cause real damage the reputation of Celtic fans.

I remember Martin O’neil saying he was disappointed when Liam Miller left, because he’s been playing to build the team around him.

So I’m not sure that Celtic can ever really build a core team. It will only last until the first big offer comes in for one of the players and then it’s back to the drawing board.

Indeed, Paul. On a completely unrelated matter, I listened to the RS podcast from Tuesday night. Wow – the sheer glee was something to behold.

Richard Gordon cackling away like an old wifie. Tom English – haven’t heard him so buoyant since he was having succulent lamb with Ronald de Boer.

Owen Coyle and Scott McDonald at least gave some balance. Owen was actually really good and at least constructive.

If it’s a stand alone deal for UEFA you can never tell what way they will go on it. The attempted kick, although frrh air from 5 yards away will be views by them as the major incident. From my position in the Sean South stand it looked a lot closer than the pic shows.

Whenever I find out which game I will be staying over in Glasgow, I will arrange to meet you and Mick for a pint and I will personally escort you to CQN Corner ! It is possible, though, that it is less popular on CL nights as the support tends to go into the ground earlier on those nights.

One final point on the pitch invader`s assailant. The Judge/Magistrate/Sheriff said something along the lines that he hoped Celtic would `see sense` and not ban the guy. I was pretty surprised at that.

  7. I also think the club should bring the lad into club once the penalties have been concluded, sit him down and go over the cost that his actions have placed on the club. Offer him a role, maybe with the foundation (unpaid) to find a way to let him pay the club back in some way while he can do some good for others less fortunate.

I agree the kick will be seen as the major aspect. From my seat, I thought he actually made slight contact and I respected M`bape ( ?) for not making a meal of it.

Liam Miller should be a cautionary tale for young Ralston. He should look at Tierney on the other side.

    ….

In the process of defending what this Chump may lose because of HIS ACTIONS, you go on about the lack of stewardship etc.

Can you please indicate in my earlier post where I defend the lack of stewardship and Policing ?

The point that I was making was that Chump was NOT a “Boy” or a “Bhoy” as you put it MWD, and imo by deliberately using the term “Bhoy”, you were trying to be a bit wide, and you know it.

This Chump aged TWENTY TWO is regarded by the whole of society as a MAN, whether some on here wish to state otherwise simply won’t wash.

Around 1974 I was found Guilty in a Court of Law….in a football related incident and fined at the age of NINETEEN (19)…I wasn’t viewed as a “Boy/Bhoy” back then…I was found guilty in a Court for Grown Ups.

MWD…I will ask you the same question that I posed earlier, if this 22 year old Chump was to attack you or family, or steal from your house ( where he shouldn’t be like on the pitch at CP), and the Police or Court decided to send him to a Childrens Panel or Juvenile Court to be judged….would you be okay with that ?

One last matter here……NONE of know what punishment Celtic will receive for this latest incident…do you think UEFA will listen to Celtics defense if Celtic say ” Although he is aged 22, he is still a Boy/Bhoy”, and UEFA take his age into consideration ?

What if UEFA decide to close part of Celtic Park over this and our so called previous….and the area that is closed is where you sit or stand ……your “defence” of this complete Chump may alter I suspect ?

Sensible post. The guy got down to the front of the stand, over the barrier and onto the track, ran by police and stewards onto the area behind the goal. He jumped over a green barrier to go into the photographers area then over the pitch side advertising and then half the length of the pitch.

The policing and stewarding was woeful and there should be questions asked of both organisations, not just Celtic.

Without being melodramatic, if the guy had been intent on doing serious harm to anyone on the pitch he could have. It was only the fact that he was blootered that meant he was incapable of landing his kick on Mbappe.

Nothing can be guaranteed on player retention as big offers will entice both players and the club but the more Scottish guys we have under medium/long term contracts should lead to better team development than a revolving door of prospects, even if some of them have be spectacularly successful such as Victor, Virgil and Fraser.

The Kelly Kids followed by the Quality Street Gang were 90% home grown and represented the best decade in our history. This has to be our model.

We will still have a few who come to us to showcase themselves and move on in 2 years. If they add to the core team during their stay and fund the next stage, that is realistically the best we can do unless we ask Nasser Al-Khelaifi to bankroll us. If we ever did that, it would not be my Celtic anymore.

At what age would you suggest Celtic ” draw the line” to invite troublemakers into Celtic Park for tea and biscuits to talk over why act the way they do ?…………..25, 37 40 ?

I NEVER suggested that this MAN should lose his job over this, but if he does he is the one who caused it to happen, if he feels persecuted or unfairly dismissed…let him take his employers Tesco to Employment Tribunal………….I for one wouldn’t defend him by telling the Court that he’s only a “Boy/Bhoy/LAD”….as I would be laughed out of Court.

  22. The previous times Celtic have been fined, for supposed “Crimes”according to UEFA,are incidents that happen every CL night across Europe.Turkey,Greece,Balkan clubs are forever being fined for similar offences.UEFA are happy to fine the clubs on a consistent basis and boost the bank balance. However, this incident may be viewed as much more serious. An assault was attempted on a player. This UEFA will deem, very serious. The field invasion on its own, would have been severely frowned on,but would have been met with the usual fine.An attempted assault will be viewed very differently. The last time it happened, with Dida,UEFA were very lenient towards Celtic.I fear, not this time.Amid all the tightening of security around the grounds and the terrorist threat, they may wish to make an example.I really fear,a partial closure of a section of the stadium.

If this cretin had just,as we see quite regularly, ran onto the pitch,OK,but to try and assault a player,he deserves jail time.It wont help the club, but actions like this need severe punishment.

I really fear the worst.Hope I am wrong.

  23. MWD………….What’s your take on Drunk drivers? wife beaters? Drunken thugery?

Drink is not an excuse, he’s NOT a wee boy, if you do the crime then prepare to do the time.

What’s done is done. Going forward, Celtic should make it clear that an individuals actions come with responsibilities. Any fine incurred is the individuals, no blaming stewards, polis, drink, he did it.

That’s what the police and security people at Celtic should be focusing on, not on trying to ‘smash the Marxist Green Brigade’.

  27. Can’t remember who suggested that, as part of the terms and conditions of a season ticket, the purchaser will be responsible for the cost to the club by any action by Eufa, for any misdemeanour brought about by the season ticket holder. Great idea methinks.

  28. I said a couple of weeks ago, that I thought Celtic should change their policy on wage structure. The 20 or so,top players, according to Brendan, should be getting paid the equivalent of at least,Championship players.I thought that Brendan would be pushing for this. With the re signing recently of some players,it seems this is what is happening. We wont hold on to everyone, but its going to take top EPL wages to lure our players away.

Great news on Calum and Jozo.
