Last night is going to hurt

383

Last night is going to hurt. Brendan will hurt, as will the players. As far as our European objectives for this season are concerned – remain involved beyond Christmas – it is close to meaningless, but it will not feel that way.

The players need to make that hurt work for them. Two weeks today, they face Anderlecht. The unpleasant taste of defeat should remain on the taste buds when we take the field in Brussels. This is our opportunity to cleanse the palate. Bottle the hurt, don’t let it escape, let the mood remain sombre.

Use it as a embryo of growth. Be sharper, fitter, more alert and clinical. Take the positives from last night, and there were some, and build on them.

Competitive football is ruthless. Players who reach the Champions League have all filtered through hundreds of iterations of selection and rejection. Last night will have brought the spectre of rejection closer to home than any of them experienced during the Invincible Experience.

If they perform as they can, they will win in Brussels. Do that, and they will justifiably feel better about their place in the great football food chain.

Spare a thought today for others who delighted in our demise last night. The morning after is when they will have realised that defeat just means we redouble our efforts to improve.

Pitch Invader

Oh, and the pitch invader: sue him for whatever fine Uefa impose.  It was a mindless attempted assault.  The reputational damage to Celtic fans from this type of action is incalculable, which the club must show concern for.  The consequences are never appropriately served on the offender.  Let them act with apparent impunity (a ban is irrelevant to some) and you let them cause real damage the reputation of Celtic fans.

  1. I’m just glad the PSG game is out of the way.

It only confirms greater financial resources provide sporting advantage as in Scotland, except Celtic’s financial muscle is earned by hard work and honesty, not pumped in like oil money.

PSG played at a pace athletically and technically that comes at a price Celtic cannot match.

We are not only club in Europe facing that reality. Calls for a European league where clubs can compete every game at their level.

    Current construct bad for football.

On the football the PSG headed goal at end was Larsonesque. From that angle and speed the only way to score was to connect with the ball exactly where he did to send it where he did. Just wish it had been Henry in Green n white.

  2. as for last night 5-0 not forgotten

finger oot for a lot of players

    lot of mistakes

coupled with a fantastic football team

who have new players and world class in every department

brendans assessment of u-12 was spot on

but he has left us short at the back and tactics were wrong

Tierney was missing at left back for a while as was Armstrong

    ntcham

were so far behind since lennon left

lost players like ki ledley wanyama virgil forster

and not replaced them with similar quality

    going forward were pretty good

    dembele Roberts and Sinclair

lessons need to be learned and playing Ralston last night was a bad idea

hope we don’t get hammered by Bayern twice and psg again

3 points in anderlect will go far

    EXCATHEDRA44,

yes, saw that from Mcgregor eariler.

Wasn’t it only last season our club told us that RC was one of the better run clubs, and that we had a very good working relationship with them ?

If that’s what our friends are saying, it looks like we stand alone. No surprise there then.

    =============================================================================

Yes exactly that is why I am disgusted with him,a man who considered Fergus as a role model.

Difference between RC and Hibs and Aberdeen is that it is unlikely they could compensate any boycott with home fans as when we are there the town population increases by 60/70%.

  5. Phil is up asking very important questions of the SFA following publication of FTT testimony from an HMRC official.

    https://philmacgiollabhain.ie/2017/09/13/seeking-transparency-from-the-scottish-football-association/

Now if the guy saw playes contracts at SFA with regard to ebts and side letters in 2000 did that not require Bryson to check on player eligibility?

If he failed to does that explain his eyebrow raising interpretation to LNS that got RFC off the ineligibility hook?

Further who was in situe at SFA who also held posts at Rangers are had Rangers pedigree in 2009?

No wonder Regan does not want to lift the lid on SFA activity re RFC use of ebts.

  6. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL

Ball watching seems to be an issue with a lot of modern central defenders.

Has zonal marking and the propensity for silky skilled centre backs taken preference over a big no nonsense clear them out centre half?

I watched Spurs game at weekend and there was a goal scored that would have been poor in a pub league.

Kane gets ball at 25 yd line with two defenders in front of him,He passes ball out left to team mate who also has defender on him.The two centre backs in front of Kane charge out towards ball carrier leaving Kane to choose where to stand in now empty penalty box.Winger slides pass past the three stoogies for unmarked Kane to tap home.

Last night Simo and Lustig both got caught in no mans land due to opponents movement and ball watching .

I prefer a general at back who designates assignment and controls the line but there does not seem to be many of those players around anymore.

  7. The Celtic Support last night was dynamite, again.

The 2nd goal lost was a poor one to lose.

Celtic learned so much last night.

We have so much to look forward to.

Young Tony and Kieran for a start. Kris will be a massive player for us.

  8. Dubaibhoy-Ur they still deid? on

    Paul,

The pitch invader will probably get fined 50 or 100 quid paid in about 10 instalments. How do you propose suing such an individual? Are you Teresa May? Could potentially be partially recouped from a 3rd party stewarding company’s indemnity insurance – but a court case would be required to demonstrate culpability first.

The club has to accept responsibility and mitigate against any potential future incidents.

  9. Certianly outclassed, however lots of room for improvement. 5th goal apart, the defending was pretty woefull for in general.

the nerves certainly got the better of a few as well.

More power to your elbow. Turn up on 11/11 and I’ll supply some ammo for that joint!

  11. Well what can you say about that , super football from PSG . Quality all over the park , that’s what money buys you , we just could not compete . I think some of our guys were in awe of the opposition , but in our heart of hearts , I bet not many truly thought we would win last night . For me it’s great that the club are in this company , surely some of our lads will take something from the game ,and the financial windfall should ,if Brendan is allowed to spend some of it ,keep us top dogs up here . Disappointed by the BBC sport on the radio on the way home , sounded to me that the panel were revelling in our skelping . Still I’ll settle for being champs up here ,until we do get it right for Europe , and we will .

  12. SHEIK YERBOUTI

Cannot agree that Tierney was missing at any point of game.

He was facing Verrati,Mbappe and Alves on his own and unsurprisingly struggled.

That he continued to battle in such circumstances says everything about the young mans courage

Is that BBC (UK) or BBC (SHORTBREAD)?

The BT commentator (McLean) was delighted with the result.

I’d much prefer an English commentator.

Going back to VFR Word of the Day,perspective.

I recall a Legned-led team losing all three home games 4-1 about seven years ago.

After one,he simply refused to discuss it-the SMSM bowed and scraped.

The following season,he discussed the draw and said that there was no way that his team would lose at home 4-1 twice this time. Someone timidly pointed out there were three of them.

    He famously said-Unirea disnae count.

    Apparently four breakaways or summat.

Still little said by the cowering tim’rous beasties wi laptops.

Let’s be honest,”twas always thus, and always will be. They can’t handle the truth,we can’t find anyone to punish them despite knowing it.

  19. How about suing the stewarding company whose remit is to prevent such occurrences happening.

There again that money would need to come from some board members coffers as well

  21. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND this fawning of psg a team that is only together because of corruption outclassed yes but fawn over them no thanks disgusting yeah money has destroyed the game thats a fact

  22. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Fan-a-tic

Yeah I saw that Kane goal. Very poor from Everton.

Ralston lost Neymar on his “blind” side a couple of times. Don’t want to slate him as I thought he performed admirably and stuck to his (very difficult) task.

There was another one when Alves got in behind Sinclair – the gap he opened up between them was quite shocking.

Are we having problems with our concentration levels?

These need to be much higher without the ball than with the ball.

Most games we have most of the ball. In these games we don’t.

    Are we struggling to adapt?

Not sure what the answer might be though!

  23. Sheik Yerbouti sorry cannot agree with your comments re Ralston thought he aquitted himself quite well, there were others far more experienced than him who were found wanting. Saying that they were an excellent team. H H Hebcelt

  24. CULTSBHOY

I don’t think we need 2 centre halves.

Just one with experience and leadership qualities.

The centre halves were not the biggest problem last night.

PSG gave a masterclass at defending and attacking as a ten man unit.

Their skill, endeavour and cohesion was testament to their coach and players.

We never formed a unit and were a disjointed team.

Hope Brendan studies the tape and brings some of the above to improve our team.

  25. excathedra44

Depends what form the peace takes I suppose, the corruption at the SFA if left unaddressed as it would seem Hibs and Aberdeen want, will cause the end of football as a sport in this country , and, corporate businessmen will have caused it because they will not demand this is dealt with properly, there will be no peace just a lot of gulity people outside of the original guilty group.

  26. CULTSBHOY SAYS HAIL HAIL TO HECTOR AND BRENDAN on 13TH SEPTEMBER 2017 1:43 PM

2 centre halves in January…should be the next part of the jigsaw…

Central midfielders capable of maintaining possession under pressure, allows defence respite and protection, and brings forwards into the game.

And one experienced centre half to partner Jozo.

  27. Re. Ralston. I thought he played Neymar as well as, and in some cases better, than Lustig has in their many meetings in recent years.

  28. Fan a tic- the FBs had little cover in front of them, against a team who looked to use width all the time IMO

  29. Go tell the Spartim on

BBC Twee/Shortbread is not an organisation that does anything for Celtic nor catholics (not mutually exclusive), for that matter, its better to let them stew in their own bile, my only gripe is that i have to pay towards this.

Rob McLean, come forward and take a bow son, you couldnt find a more happy individual than this clown anywhere on the planet.

  30. Like most today, really disappointed with the result. If it were true champions that were playing we would have been playing Monaco if we drew the french representative not the over paid stars of PSG. But this is what UEFA want and they are playing a big role in who is at the big table, financial fair play my arse

From what I saw of the match through my horrendous feed and constant buffering, I thought the young boy Ralston acquitted himself well. The one thing I will offer young Tony is, don’t get mixed up in the chit chat with that weasel of a supposed professional. If he mouths off about a tackle hit him harder next time and when he complains again just ignore him get the head down play football and thwart his every attempt to suck you in by walking away with a smile on your face, this will turn the tables on the wee ratbag
