Last night is going to hurt

383

Last night is going to hurt. Brendan will hurt, as will the players. As far as our European objectives for this season are concerned – remain involved beyond Christmas – it is close to meaningless, but it will not feel that way.

The players need to make that hurt work for them. Two weeks today, they face Anderlecht. The unpleasant taste of defeat should remain on the taste buds when we take the field in Brussels. This is our opportunity to cleanse the palate. Bottle the hurt, don’t let it escape, let the mood remain sombre.

Use it as a embryo of growth. Be sharper, fitter, more alert and clinical. Take the positives from last night, and there were some, and build on them.

Competitive football is ruthless. Players who reach the Champions League have all filtered through hundreds of iterations of selection and rejection. Last night will have brought the spectre of rejection closer to home than any of them experienced during the Invincible Experience.

If they perform as they can, they will win in Brussels. Do that, and they will justifiably feel better about their place in the great football food chain.

Spare a thought today for others who delighted in our demise last night. The morning after is when they will have realised that defeat just means we redouble our efforts to improve.

Pitch Invader

Oh, and the pitch invader: sue him for whatever fine Uefa impose.  It was a mindless attempted assault.  The reputational damage to Celtic fans from this type of action is incalculable, which the club must show concern for.  The consequences are never appropriately served on the offender.  Let them act with apparent impunity (a ban is irrelevant to some) and you let them cause real damage the reputation of Celtic fans.

  1. I have lived in Canada since 1964 sound more Canadian than Scottish but I think and dream in Scottish they can never change me,just like I am a Celtic supporter I didn’t one day decide to be a Celtic supporter it happened when I was in nappies. As a youngster before I had even started school my dad used to have me recite the Coronation cup team to my uncles and his pals. He took me to Celtic park sometimes the second team when the big team were playing away

Reading some of the comments today reminded me of the time he took me to a game under the fairly new floodlight to play a charity game against Real Madrid Puskas etal they were financially doped long before the R.E.M. Was invented. Quite a few of our future Lisbon Lions played in that game where it didn’t matter what we did they would just step up a gear and stay ahead of us. I admired their play but it was like a dagger in my heart to see Celtic lose and it still feels the same today I always think we are going to win although I know it’s not possible. Brendan learned more from the defeat to Barca last year and the defeat to PSG last night than he learned from every game he has coached in the SPFL It’s hard the day after trying to comprehend the let down it will get better as the days pass keep your heads up and don’t let the lackeys in the press get you down they are hurting more than you are at least we have a 30 to €40 million poultice to put on our headache to help with our healing. All they have is a JUdical Review hanging over their heads

  3. Not a lot of work done today — mind on other things

Egg chaser in the work trying to wind me up — said we got beat by an unconverted try to nil.

As for the game — step forward their MotM …

Their GK — excellent game with great shot blocking and control of his 6 yard box.

Swap him for CG and the final score would have been 4 – 2.

Good to see some of the players coming out and saying the team played poorly.

Better understanding of the game than the PSG fan boys who claim they are unbeatable.

    We were poor.

    We lacked energy and confidence.

Our biggest failing was not our mistakes but our complete inability to take the opportunities and chances we were given.

    ON’s shot at 0-0 = schoolboy stuff.

TR’s shot in space on the D = wasteful and dishonest.

Belt it in the direction of the goal rather than taking the responsibility of trying to beat the GK.

    A fine post, sir.

We applauded Celtic during their lap of honour after the Real defeat.

Until the SFA business is satisfactorily resolved, matches and results are of lesser importance.

UEFA can’t/won’t apply their FFP rules and the SFA won’t/can’t apply their licensing/registration rules.

  5. I’d like to hear the stewarding company explain to Celtic how, once more, how a drunken idiot was able to outsmart their stewards and run half the length of the stadium to make an attempted assault.

I know what I’d be telling them.

    Especially regarding their fee.

  7. memories. my first game was gonna say parkhead. but okay celtic park come on guys help me out. playing airdrie we were winning i think 8-0 get a penalty .frank haffey takes and misses hey blantyre tim where was yer old man.

  8. When I woke up this morning I was still a TIM!

Thank you MUM and DAD and thank you GOD.

HAIL HAIL THE CELTS ARE HERE!

    Oh…….and I love the Celtic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  9. I genuinely think a major reform of European football is not far away. The reason? The CL is seriously devalued.

The elite teams now treat the Group stage as a warm-up to the post-Christmas ties. Like it or not, about half the 32 who make up the groups are cannon fodder. When was the last time a big Spanish/English team failed to make it out of the groups? The element of surprise – so critical to cup competition – is completely missing until the QFs.

We are the cannon fodder. Like Qarabag, who saved our blushes by losing 6 last night, we are just happy to be there. We will occasionally take a scalp at home and will put up a decent fight against the mid-rankers… but no-one expects us to Progres.

Ultimately the elite and TV audiences will get bored of this. So too will dozens of Scandi, Dutch, Baltic, Balkan clubs. And us.

I can see 2 competitions within 5-10 years. One for the Barcas and PSGs of this world, and a secondary one for the rest.

  10. BIG PACKY.

That game was in 63..Celtic were 9 up when Haffey missed the penalty .Celtic won 9–0.

  11. Big Packy,

That would have been about1960. I was sitting on the wee ledge at the back of the Jungle, where I spent my childhood watching the big team. Frank Haffey took time off from swinging on the crossbar to go up to the other end to take thon fabled penalty. A real character was Frank.

  12. Re the leg shaving and Asensio. I think that many years ago Lineker told the tale of when he and Mark Hughes joined Barca.

The Spanish guys told Lineker to shave his legs as defenders would grab the hairs and pull them out when being marked at see pieces. Honestly! Lineker went along with it, Hughes ignored them as he was too much of a bloke’s bloke.

Hughes got the treatment from the defenders, Lineker was smooth and pain free. Could be an urban myth, but I spoke to an old boxer years ago who told me that boxers shaved their armpits to avoid the same treatment.

    Funny old world….

Valebhoy, not sure if still the same, but Celtic used to have their own Stewards company – Protecevent ? From memory, if still in place will be being run by our fantastic head of Security and Safety, mr Hawthorne

I hope he has been spoken too today, again ??

    Italiabhoy

I have been thinking about this today

I think there needs to be an alternative ‘ Real League champions cup’ let the champions league run for the so called 5 elite leagues.

For those non elite leagues, create a Real Champions Cup for league winners.

I’m sure we could come up with at least 24 teams from countries not currently being represented ?

I will come up with some countries later, but there are plenty

The 4 semi finalists of this competition, can automatically qualify the following season for the Champions league.

Non league winners can continue in the Uefa Cup

    Hail Hail

You’ve intrigued the skorrie household – how did boxers manage to pull out outer hair, when they’re wearing gloves?

  17. RIOSKORRIE

It was many years ago, but I have no reason to doubt the source. He coached Walter McGowan and fought for a world title…you can take it up with him.

I wear gloves at training and can still grip a towel or water bottle?

My da first took me 61-62 but the 9-0 in 63 is my earliest memory. I sat on a crush barrier up the Celtic end as Frank Haffey skied his penalty over the bar. Strange how vivid a memory can be after 54 years when I can’t remember loads of games I was at in the 80s 90s. Btw it was the crowd shouting for Haffey to get no.10 that day.

  19. Good evening, friends.

I have a brother who has lived in Rotterdam for 35+ years. My nephew and niece are massive Feyenoord fans and as a result I always look out for their results. Delighted when they won the league for the first time in yonks and hoped we’d get into Pot 3 and then get them in our Group. Anyway, got all set to watch them tonight but after 25 minutes (and with memories of last night) I’ve had to switch over as they are already 0 – 3 down to Manchesity.

On the BT Goals show now which is always excellent!

PS – as for the “fan” who got onto the pitch can confirm (1) he didn’t come from the standing section, (2) I saw his progress to the pitch in almost slow motion and at the time I was screaming ‘why aren’t those stewards and/or cops doing anything!!’.

Good to be back on CQN. At the game last night the first 45 mins was the best football I have seen from a away team at Celtic Park Every. Went for a smoke at H/T Thanks Celtic for the smoking area. Not one supporter was moaning. Second Half The Support from the fans was Brilliant a part from that Idiot. Stayed till the end walking back to The Gorbals had to go for a few pints in Sharkeys. All the Bhoys starting to come in not one complaint we had just seen a really brilliant team. Got home and as usual went on CQN felling Proud to being a Tim .Then I read that piss from gorbalstam if he is from The Gorbals then I’m from Outer Mongolia. HH

  21. Italiabhoy @ 7.34

Spot on. It looks like Feyenoord might suffer humiliation tonight against Man City. Dutch teams, like us, are also out of their depth in the CL. It’s time football associations like the Dutch and the SFA (oh well forget that) took legal action against UEFA for anti-competitive behaviour, which is supposed to be against European law.

  22. Big packy:

Roddie McKenzie( was from the north of ireland) was in goals for Airdrie.

A week or two later haffey was hurt v Patrick thistle gemmell deputised.

Thanks to my scrapbook and old Celtic views’.

  23. I’ve been watching Dortmund give Tottenham a chasing at Wembley. Spurs lead 2-1 but Dortmund are running the show not too dissimilar to PSG last night.

  24. Big J

Next season the qualification route Celtic get into the Champions league through, reduces in teams from 8 to 4, as England, Spain, Germany and Italy all get an extra team from their leagues.

Leaves a lot of countries struggling, Holland, Poland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Croatia, Bosnia, Portugal, Switzerland, Ireland, Iceland, Austria, Luxembourg:-)),

There are lots more, and not even considered those who currently compete, even though not in Europe (Ex-Russia), my goodness we could invite Canad and American champions, it’s closer than some of the places we travel to in qualifiers :-)

Right I need to think aboooot this
