Last season’s Celtic edge over the line

1112

Shortly after Elfsborg cracked one against the crossbar last night I quickly scanned the Celtic team and had a thought.  For the second season in a row we are taking on the Swedish champions but we’re missing two of last season’s big performers and none of this season’s new signings were ready for action.  In short, this was Celtic 2012 minus Wanyama and Hooper. No wonder we looked unstructured.

Joe Ledley brought some vision to central midfield when he arrived, hopefully banishing the Brown-Kayal partnership to hidden corners of our mind once and for all.  Anthony Stokes playing at the front of a wide diamond was equally effective.  With the signing of Amido Balde, bids in for Kevin Doyle, and the addition of a wide-delivery-expert Derk Boerrigter, clearly Neil Lennon has a different plan for the months to come….. so there’s no real need for me to state the obvious.

Defensively we looked solid after a shaky opening few minutes.  I’m not the only one who was a bit nervous about Efe Ambrose after he was (again) caught underneath a long ball, but he settled quickly.  As we know to our cost, being great for 87 minutes is not how Champions League reputations are made, you are judged on your how vulnerable you become in your weak moments.

I said yesterday that Samaras and Commons were the two players who could cope at this level, which became plainly obvious during the game.  Georgios was the one player who frightened Elfsborg, they either swamped him with four defenders or fouled him before he got near goal.

Kris is simply the most intelligent footballer we have.  He is not the fastest, will never have the best stats, but he understands how games are won and is able to act accordingly.  Without these two players Celtic would be distinctly vanilla.

Thanks to those who sent over their 1254125 Great Scottish Run details, I’ll have them on the page later.

  3. I just can’t understand why there are so many people making there minds upon the new guy Balde, he hardly played a game ffs, ou really need to cool your jets some of you honestly, give the new guys a chance at least ten games and then you can. Kind of see what they are like, after all like any job you need to be bedded in, leave it toNfl, he is the man HAIL HAIL

  4. Henr1k,

But surely what is now known as Airdrieonians Football Club is just Clydebank with a new name? Clydebank became Airdrie United became Airdrieonians – an unbroken line.

Now if the new club was claiming the history of the former Airdrieonians, an entirely separate club that went bankrupt, that would be a different story

The problem is IMO our new signings are generally pitched in at CL qualifier time, and there is an increased expectation level allied to increased anxiety amongst the support. Add to that the angst at the board re the players who have departed and you have an explosive recipe! Get through the qualifiers and our new bhoys will get a bit more tolerance I feel.

  9. Twist an Turns………. Well that is kinda my point, bed them in, the squad is big enough, put it this way, if Wanyama and Hooper where injured for the game on we’d. Night just for talking sake like, that team we put on the park would have been the team and no one would have said a word, so I think IMO that everyone is just going a wee bit overboard.

  12. I seen through the night that people mentioned that Colin McAdam had died. I have found out this morning that this is sadly true. I work with Colin for 10 years a few years back i a scholl in the east end of Glasgow. We would have some great wind ups about football and that his brother was the better player etc. What was obvious was that Colin was a very kind and considerate human being, as the school we worked in was for young guys 14-18 who society could not deal with. The amount of time the big man gave to these young guys was incredible.

Even as a P.E. Teacher Colin would often come into work on his holidays or weekends to take some of these kids on trips to Alton Towers, Blackpool and other places that these kids would never have had the chance to go to.

Colin McAdam was a real good guy.

R.I.P Colin you will be missed.

Yep. Actually, now is the time our new bhoys need the support more than they ever will, as they too are settling in , getting to know their team mates, formations, when to make the run , when not etc, and of course, getting us to the CL proper.

I don’t know if the new signings will make it or not, but I do know they deserve a period of support to help them.

If Neil has got it wrong then these players will come in for some stick soon enough, as will Neil, as will PL and the rest.

    Time for calm……..

It has been pointed out on here and indeed by Neil Lennon that UEFA does not allow such restrictions in cross border loans so no blame to anyone please. Elfsborg did what was right for Elfsborg whilst Mo did as any professional would – hope to prove to Celtic that they were wrong and hope to show Elfsborg he’s worth a permanent spot with them. Thought booing him was unworthy of Celtic supporters.

I wonder if you will harbour the same noble sentiments if he scores in the away leg….

I’ll agree with them, and disagree with you on this one…..
