Late developer Jullien, Turnbull and medicals

241

Toulouse central defender, Christopher Jullien, looks set to become Celtic’s first confirmed signing of the transfer window.  A 26-year-old, the €8m fee,  is a departure from Celtic’s strategy of signing young players they can develop into more valuable assets.  He is, however, a like-for-like replacement for Dedryck Boyata, who left for Hertha Berlin last month.

Neil Lennon will know what he is getting with Jullien.  He has been tested in a difficult league and there will be no repeat of the Marvin Compper fiasco, when millions were committed without proper diligence being carried out.

Jullien was a late developer.  He played only one top-flight game, for Freiburg in the Bundesliga, before joining Toulouse as a 23-year-old.  Since then he has been first choice for the Ligue 1 outfit.  This relatively low profile is probably why he remains attainable for Celtic.

At 6’5”, he is three inches taller than Boyata, who joined Celtic as a 24-year-old, having played roughly the same number of top-flight games as Jullien at that age.  I will be delighted to see the paperwork sorted and the player pass his medical.

Speaking of which, there are reasons why we do medicals.  A discrepancy was flagged in Jozo Simunovic’s medical four years ago.  The player was sent to Harley St for a second opinion, which gave Celtic enough confidence to complete the signing.  Jozo has hobbled in and out of the team ever since.

Whatever the problems with David Turnbull’s medical, millions are not casually spent on any player with an expectation he will sit in the stand, or fail any future medical, which would inhibit any resale value.

Let’s hope the boy’s health is good, first and foremost, and that a way forward is found.

Hope the players get a good stretch against Austrian fourth tier SC Pinkafeld tonight.

Magnifique; deux French vainquers pour l’equipe, posiblement.

So, a four way tussle for LB between KT, Jonny, Romain and Andy Gutman.

Maintenant, Pierre Lawwell…un arriere sur la droite ?

So P67 – who dropped the ball and signed off on Marvellous Marvin? Exec, scout or manager…?

This was Edouard’s first season in his career as the main starting striker. With a record fee over his head the pressure was on. Drame? Pas de drame.

In the summer of 2019 it was announced that Romain Perraud would join Celtic FC, leaving Paris FC and OGC Nice behind. Perraud has always been known for his admiration of the Republican movement and by joining Celtic, he fulfilled his life-long dream of working with Neil Lennon and linking up with Ballon D’Or winner Jonathan Hayes

From the interweb an appraisal of Monsieur Jullien…

Throughout the league campaign he averaged 6.46 aerial duels per game, which isn’t particularly poor or impressive. However, success rate for those headers stands at 76 per cent – which is the very best in the league…

Using his ability to win duels in the air naturally makes the defender a big threat from set pieces too. As we saw in the first leg of the relegation play-off clash with Ajaccio, Jullien always manages to find space in the box from corners of free kicks. Indeed, over the course of just two years at the club the central defender has found his name on the scoreboard on seven occasions. And in this season alone he ranked highest among Ligue 1 defenders for expected goals, picking up a figure of 3.63. If you’re looking for a goalscoring central defender in French football then you’ll struggle to find one better than Jullien.

…However, in Jullien there is a defender who may find his lapses in concentration increase when the quality of opposition takes a steep hike.

    Perfect for SPFL then??

  14. I have no inside information on whether Jullien will sign or not .

Brentford have a scout who is based in France and is dedicated to finding players from the lower levels of French Football.

That scout is a fellow Fifer. He is from a Celtic supporting family. He was responsible for discovering the. 3 French players that have been a great success at Brentford.

His family and indeed he himself pay attention to CQN.

I asked him about Julian when we were linked with him 3 weeks ago.

He felt that he would be out with our price range.

That he would be successful if he came to Celtic.

That he was better that any other CH in Scottish football.

He would dominate in both penalty box areas.

    So if Jullien comes.

I for one will be delighted.

I am also pleased that Neil Lennon recognises the need for a player of such quality to replace Boyata, and that the board are supporting his judgement.

We need a mixture of projects and players who can make an instant impact.

    Let’s hope this one happens.

  15. Re Celtic TV feedback.

Thanks everyone who responded. I do look an the CTV site but it would be good if they could publish what is being shown like most TV schedules.

    Anyways….C’est La Vie !

  16. Peraud is a left back aye?

Great if he signs as we need cover there or does it mean the unthinkable?

  17. Some good feedback about big Jullien.

These big men sometimes need a bit of time to find their range. Paul Elliott and big Bobo were both a bit raw at first. So if he does sign some patience might be required.

It may well be the unthinkable but its good to bring a player in first before we think of selling. My gripe, well apart from the possibility of KT leaving is the piss poor offer from Arsenal, Wan Bissaka is going for £50m and he’s limited, they’re also trying to buy defenders in France, younger than KT for more money than they are offering us. Even if £25m is the figure, he’s worth more than that, considerably more.

  19. Go Tell the Spartim

I still think any deal for KT will only be done if we dont qualify for the Champions League

Clinging to the hope Lenny sees Tierney as a left winger, in which case both could be accomodated

    B-)

  20. Celtic need more than one LB. Don’t assume a signing at that position is a replacement for KT.

The transfer industry has the same integrity as celebrity gossip or horoscopes. It’s all made up.

  21. Tam McManus saying that Turnbull with be out for 10 to 12 weeks. Needs a minor knee op to “tidy up” something

Deal still expected to go ahead. Still puts him out the qualifiers.
