Latvia likely destination for Celtic

331

It will be off to Latvia to face Riga or, assuming they do not unexpectedly lose at home in the second round to Tre Fiori from San Marino.  Riga lost their first round Champions League match away to Maccabi Tel-Aviv and went out at the same stage a year ago to Dundalk on penalties, before losing their Europa League play-off tie 3-2 on aggregate to Copenhagen, who went on to eliminate Celtic by a greater margin.

It is a tie we will win if we get everything right and will lose if there is anything remotely half-arsed going on.  Riga are 17 games into their domestic season; be prepared, Celtic.

Watching the goals this morning from the 0-2 win at Ibrox a year ago today brought a reminder of where we were the morning of that game.  Facing the perennial Summer Cup Champions [no, it’s not wartime] at their own place, having been turfed out of the Champions League by Cluj, we faced the longest odds for a league win in seven years.

That setup what may be become a fourth consecutive treble.  Cluj hurt the bank balance but European credentials were restored with wins over Lazio and Rennes.  We could do with a big game, a bit win, now.

  1. Happy Wednesday eve from Kentucky Derby week in Louisville.

No fans but a lot of protesters. Might not just be the horses that are running.

    HH!

  2. Siempre Celtic (formerly Traditionalist88) on

So to sum up..not the mugs they once were.

Or, to be a little more topical, not the chumps they once were!

We may have to settle for 3.

  3. “It is a tie we will win if we get everything right and will lose if there is anything remotely half-arsed going on”

    – A phrase that could sum up the Ferencvaros debacle. (Not that want to go back there).

Play your best players in their best positions. And may I add, let’s quickly understand where their best positions are.

  4. Cracking draw in my opinion. As a Dundalk fan, I actually attended both home and away legs last year. Both of which we should have won. We deservedly qualified on pens in Riga. Although narrowly losing to Copenhagen would seem a decent result. A real chance of progression

  5. Looks like another fixture screw up as we have games scheduled for …

Thursday 1st October -potential EL Play Off

Friday 2nd October- away to St Johnstone (on Sky TV)

Friday can’t be moved back as it’s before another international break so unless UEFA move the dates we miss out on another fixture. Remember many teams (including Huns) will be affected by this.

  6. All the more reason we play Saints on Sept 16.Get it done Celtic. This is a great draw.

Huns away in Ho.lland,to,couldn’t make it up,Willem 2.Could be dodgy right enough.

  7. Reading Charlie (Green) and the bhoys(duffs and Phelps)

are going to get a public apology from advocate and millions in compensation.

Whats chances that FF and all are posting “see the rangers were hard done by”

Conveniently forgetting it was like of them that chased the “rats”out of town

and demanded that Charlie and the bhoys be prosecuted or is that persecuted

  9. lets all do the huddle on

could be a tricky away tie

i think we should play it safe and start with no striker

  10. Go tell the Spartim on

Used to be more apprehensive about away ties in Europe, now its 50/50, and not because were great away from home

  11. We’re quite some way from being sufficiently in the groove for a big game any time soon, let alone ‘right now’.

    Draw not bad.

Would rather play Riga than Willem “Twey”.

Embramike – thank you for fixture updates.

Starting to fix this issue from mid-September is good news (if we win of course).

My point was, if people don’t like the law itself then hassle the parliamentarians who set it – not lawyers or judges.

Sorry to ruin your life, but it ain’t gonna happen. You should take up something else to focus all your attention on,like,Crochet.A lot less disappointments.

  15. I know there are no excuses for many of our European misadventures and avoidable failures but how come we a seeded team largely, never seem to get the same luck of the draw that others enjoy?

That is a tough enough draw for this stage in Europe.

Still, you have to beat what is put in front of you.

  16. BIG WAVY,

Again, reading back.I have come to the conclusion that no matter what Greg Taylor does, you will never change your opinion on him.The boy has only started out playing this role, needs to improve a couple of things, but the system we have been playing does not suit wing backs.Look up,no one in the middle,re-cycle the ball. This is seen by many as passing back, its not,its keeping the ball.Anyway,my last words with you on this subject.Anything else,no problem.

  17. BIG WAVY,

LOL.I don’t agree with most of his negative posts, but the main thing is that bloody user name.Should be nowhere near a Tim blog.

It’s all about opinions mate and whilst I don’t see it with GT personally, I’d be more than happy to be proved wrong.

  23. Nightmare scenario, due to go to Algarve on Thursday, looks like Portugal going back on the list Thursday afternoon is usually the List Update…..can’t cancel flights as we will get nothing back, trying to ask Jet2 for a voucher refund, in lieu of not travelling and adding to the chaos of coming home, and complying with government guidelines, anyone had similar recently?

  24. Bada,

Had it twice since the start if lockdown – States and Greece.

Both airlines were brand new but to be fair we didn’t have what you have – update on the day of travel. I think if it does go on the list it’s not always immediate (like France recently) but might be a problem of knowing it could 14 quarantine on way back.

  25. Actually the fixture ‘pile up’ is worse than I though as we currently have 4 games in 8 days !

    Thursday 24 Spt EL QR3 Riga (A) (?)

    Saturday Thursday Hibs (H)

Thursday 1st October -potential EL Play Off

Friday 2nd October- St Johnstone (A) (on Sky TV)

If UEFA move the potential EL play off to Tuesday (29th) to allow the Friday (2nd) fixture, the Hibs game can’t be moved to Sunday (27th) to allow for the Thursday (24th) QR3 away game.

So either the QR3 game is moved to 22nd/23rd or we potentially lose the Friday (2nd) St Johnstone game.

So we’d be asking UEFA to move the QR3 game on the supposition we win and play in the PO game ?

  26. Big Jimmy

Hi. I loved that all dark green strip too. I thought it was classy but to be honest I can’t remember particular games in which we wore it. I’ll take your word for it that Kiev game in67/68 🙁 was the last time because we didn’t wear it too often.

Are the CHUMPS related to the TRUMPS?

    I’ll get my coat ………..,,
