Latvia likely destination for Celtic

331

It will be off to Latvia to face Riga or, assuming they do not unexpectedly lose at home in the second round to Tre Fiori from San Marino.  Riga lost their first round Champions League match away to Maccabi Tel-Aviv and went out at the same stage a year ago to Dundalk on penalties, before losing their Europa League play-off tie 3-2 on aggregate to Copenhagen, who went on to eliminate Celtic by a greater margin.

It is a tie we will win if we get everything right and will lose if there is anything remotely half-arsed going on.  Riga are 17 games into their domestic season; be prepared, Celtic.

Watching the goals this morning from the 0-2 win at Ibrox a year ago today brought a reminder of where we were the morning of that game.  Facing the perennial Summer Cup Champions [no, it’s not wartime] at their own place, having been turfed out of the Champions League by Cluj, we faced the longest odds for a league win in seven years.

That setup what may be become a fourth consecutive treble.  Cluj hurt the bank balance but European credentials were restored with wins over Lazio and Rennes.  We could do with a big game, a bit win, now.

Thought you had suggested that we were indeed due to play in Israel, no matter.

We have to play Israel 3 times soon – first 2 at home and final one away …

    4 September – Scotland v Israel (Nations League MD1)

    8 October – Scotland v Israel (Euro 2020 play-off semi-final)

    18 November – Israel v Scotland (Nations League MD6)

While a fit James Mc Carthy might be a useful addition, Scott Robertson has just been given a three year deal. and will surely get some game this season, especially if we lose Rogic, and or Nchaim by the end of this month.

    Then again maybe not.

When I thought I was logged out I went back to page 1 and posted there. When I then went back to the current page the post was there and I was “back in”, everything back in view

  6. I have seen a few posters commenting on Shane Duffy`s arrival but I haven`t seen any confirmation that he has.

I actually know very little about James McCarthy.

I also know very little about football now !!!

  8. The one thing you can be sure of is that PL will spend less than we recieve but that is no bad thing.

Ajeti, turnbull, duffy, elyounoussi will not cost more than Celtic net for Kouassi, rogic, barry of B Munich, 30% of hickie fee, 10 % of dembele fee and the very likely sale of ntcham. Can also see ajer going for an 8 figure transfer fee on top of that.

We have also seen a massive cull of the squad and we might also see Bayo and shved etc sold if they succeed in their loan.

1 dynamic left back/wingback and a left sided centreback if ajer leaves and we are good to go.

  9. Hot Smoked – I just saw it on RTE’s main news……….

Now, there was no pic of the Bhoy in a Hooped shirt just a piece on the loan deal as part of a feature on the upcoming international games ( irish)

So at Home versus Israel October 8th, not away.

Away to Israel in eleven weeks.

Only the play-off game has any merit, given it could take Scotland part way to the Euros next summer.

We could have half a dozen players playing in any game against Israel. Scandalous exploitation of club players.

  12. Logging in, logging out…..logging in………….and no crap, anywhere……………

    How about James McArthur?

Similar name, and one more letter on the shirt, could be a few bob in there.

    —-

so yet another reason why the obsession with trying to have a team full of scottish players is majorly flawed

  15. lets all do the huddle

Was counting our own Israelis in there.

Doesn’t invalidate your point mind you.

I must have missed out on the Scottish patriotic genes so I could never be a card carrier for the SNP. But, An, you seem reasonable and open-minded, like myself, so I’m sure that you will acknowledge that the current £15 billion GERS deficit spells disaster. Even the SNP’s own Growth Commission as much as warned of a decade of austerity come independence. Poverty already blights this country. It twists and warps the lives of one in four school children. Independence will be celebrated for one day. Then there will be a God-awful reckoning. And that isn’t worth all the kilts and saltires you can shake a stick at.

  17. Something that I ave been thing about, the huns have to go to Gibraltar to play the Imps team, so I imagine they are gonna have to do a bit of jiggery pokery to get around the quarantine law, there is no direct flight from Glasgow to Gib as far as I know, I stand to be corrected, they can’t go to Malaga so they have to fly directly into Gib, that’s gonna cost them a few extra bob hopefully

  18. lets all do the huddle on

Aye but we would get internationals, hopefully, from other nations so we would end up in the same boat

    but we wouldnt

because we wont be able to sign the international players from so many other countries. so we sign either young players from those countries or players who arent quite good enuf (yet?) to get in their international team but will still be better than anything scotland has to offer

  19. I would be fully confident of beating Latvia at CP or over 2 legs but, having lost to Red Imps away, we can take no tie as a given.

Latvia’s recent (from the last decade) home Euro results are:-

    2:2 with Debrecen

    2:1 over St. Pat’s

    2:1 over Slovan Liberec

    0:1 loss to Tirasapol

    1:0 over Hadjuk Split

    0:1 loss to Wisla

    0:1 loss to Portadown

    1:1 draw with Derry

So while they have lost and drawn to poorer teams than us, they have beaten Czech and Hungarian teams at home. The main observation to make is that they rarely ship more than 1 goal at home, so our defence will be as important as our attack.

I expect us to get through but it will be tight.

Still, overall a decent draw if we are to go away and we stand a better chance as an away team than is true of

Willem II vs Sons of Willem II

  20. We have a whean of players away this week, Duffy hopefully, Ajer, Ncham, Eddie, Connell, Klimala, El Hamed, Biton, Rogic, Mo Ely, Ajeti….that’s a fair whack of non Scots

  21. AN TEARMANN on 1ST SEPTEMBER 2020 7:44 PM

You might want to find out what the term fiscal deficit means.

Admittedly not as much fun as waving a saltire, but maybe more important.

  22. SFTB

Pedant here. Latvians beat Czech and Croatian sides and drew with Hungarians. Doesn’t change the thrust of your post, and stands up to comparisons with our results against Maribor and Ferencvaros. This is a banana skin.

(I hope you don’t mind me butting in as I know your post was directed to AN TEARMANN.)

Genuine question, why do you have any hope in the UK? A no deal Brexit will cause untold catastrophe to the UK (NHS opened up to the US Big Pharma, the lowering of food and environmental standards etc etc etc) and Brexit isn’t something that will ever be reversed – or rather it can be but only if Scotland is independent.

Over and above that, democracy in the UK is being destroyed by Johnson/Cummings and it seems to me that the uk is now on an inevitable slide towards a Russian style democracy ie voting as a ritual to cement the ruling oligarchy and not as a genuine political choice. There’s a famous quote which I can’t quite remember but the gist is this – when ordinary people realise that fascism is taking over it already too late.

So to go back to my original question (and believe me I would love to have some hope as I’m terrified about what the future holds for my kids) – where is your evidence that things will be better as part of the uk?

  24. Losing Ntcham would be bad from a football point of view.

Would it also reduce the esprit de corps that helps french Eddie feel at home here?
