Laughing stock of football world

269

My friends in Celtic, we are the laughing stock of the football world.  This status has been achieved by becoming the soft touches of Scottish football.  Dundee United can only win one game in 11?  Not to worry, we’ve Celtic next.  St Mirren only won two games in 10?  Chill, it’s Celtic at Hampden.  United are so poor, that win of theirs came against an even-poorer St Mirren.

Three weeks ago we were hot favourites for the league, with a nine-point advantage over Newco.  We still have an advantage, but a third place finish is now as likely as any other outcome.  Maybe you always fancied a crack at the Conference League?

Last night’s game at Tannadice encapsulated so much of the story.  Celtic were scintillating for much of the first half and could have had the game won.  It is not Wilfried Nancy’s fault that the squad is short of an experienced striker who would have made that a reality.

However, Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin, figured out what Celtic were doing at halftime and turned the tables.  Celtic were completely nullified from the start of second period.  The equaliser on 58 minutes was more than merited, as Celtic were unable to clear their lines until then.  Both United goals came from pressure after a corner kick.  That’s five goals in four games from corners Celtic have conceded.  Maybe playing with only one central defender for the first time this century is a bit too radical?

Goodwin in not alone.  Derek McInnes figured out the same thing for Hearts earlier this month.  His side were battered for the opening 30 minutes, changed to suit the Celtic formation and had their easiest game at Celtic Park for a long time.  St Mirren’s Stephen Robinson had seen enough to know what to do before he arrived at Hampden on Sunday.  Celtic’s formation made it easy for all three.

This period has encouraged our opponents.  Newco and Hearts were broken at the beginning of this month.  Today they are invigorated and they will approach each game, as well as the January transfer window, with renewed appetite.  Celtic are there for the taking and everyone knows it.  I am getting “What is going on?” messages from across the world; we are world news.  This scale of capitulation is that exceptional.

  1. You forgot the ‘It’s all Brendan’s fault…’ bit Paulo.

Name who is responsible; who are the decision makers who allowed or promoted the current state of play?

We demand to know ra names, as a rotund pundit wanst asked.

With the faint-hearted in our line up, we’re as much chicken stock as we are laughing stock.

  2. And self inflicted, there I finished that for you Mr Brennan.

Those who caused this, should not be left to fix it, they should be sacked.

Is Kettlewell still available? Actually – forget it – he probably wouldn’t even want it…..

  4. lets all do the huddle on

    apart from ibrox,

was the 36 quid we payed last night to get into tannadice the most we have ever been charged for a league game?

“It is not Wilfried Nancy’s fault that the squad is short of an experienced striker who would have made that a reality.”

    —————

I thought it was all about buying young players to develop – no?

  6. We are lacking in every area of the pitch starting from goalkeeper, through defence, midfield and attack. That is entirely down to the board deciding that money in the bank (and HMRC’s bank) is more important than good football players.

They’ve decided it’s the hun’s turn to win the league and they don’t even care if it’s the Edinburgh huns that do it

  7. “It is not Wilfried Nancy’s fault that the squad is short of an experienced striker who would have made that a reality.”

    No, it’s not.

    Whose fault is it then?

    Managed Decline.

The Old Firm must remain solvent even if it means cutting our own throats.

    Another rigged season.

  9. Don’t worry, Tilsdale and Nicholson will fix it. We are lucky to have such world class men in situ who know how to turn things around.

  10. My main points to friends last night:

    half time –

    Decent striker and 4-0

WTF are we doing with 1 CH!!

Any decent Utd runs and any level of passer and we are wide open in channels and up the sides.

    Full time –

Utd had spotted the gaps, got the corners , eventually got past Trusty

Got in our faces and we shat it physically

The lack of goals was a big problem all season but the 343 with no obvious wingbacks and the 1 CH trick, allied to selection tombola (i coined this under Lennon) is all down to Nancy

He should have nursed the existing tactics through to the end of the season – play around on training pitch

Buy the right types in Jan

No support asked from O’Neill or Maloney (at the club) it seems.

How did he get through the interview?

Maloney as manager and O’Neill as mentor was mocked as the board option when Rodgers resigned. Should have done it. The US league season has undone us here

    BUT!!!

we had 2-3 sitters second half to still win the game – players coming up with ways to screw up

I wonder if BR would have stayed had he know PL was leaving

Big call on the horizon. Does DD back this guy or sack him

    Who knows.

  12. When Brendan says the team isn’t strong enough, its treason.

When Paul says similar (albeit took longer to get there)….?

  13. So all the money we have banked from previous is a just a ‘kitty’ to see us bye to allow for others to win the league this season and receive the £millions payout from the champions league .

  14. I wouldn’t give Tidsdale another penny to spend, he should be out along with Nancy and his crew, this squad takes me back to the days of when we had Wayne Biggins and those types.

First thing I’d do is play Sinisalo, if Schmeichel takes the huff free him in the window, select a back 4 from what we have, 2 Centre Halfs must play, and recruit a capable right back as back up to Johnston let AR go and Donovan on loan somewhere for game time, Fraser from St Mirren might be an option, the midfield has been weak for several seasons I would keep Callum and Paolo and sell all of the rest.

We have no Centre forwards and only Forrest who can play wide but he’s a 30minute player, sell the rest Daizen Yang Tounekti Balikwisha, Palma will be back he isn’t any worse and has the odd goal in him. What a shambles Celtic is.

I get the impression that there’s a bunch of posters on here who will never be happy until Paul67 writes “I hate Ra Board – and it’s all Lawwells fault”…and even if he did, not sure it would make that much difference.

When MON and Shaun were touted as interims, many of those same posters were adamant that it was all a backside covering exercise and that we were being softened up for Maloney as future manager. Frankly, would that have been such a bad thing if they proved to be “successful” over the interim?

This is a disaster of a season and WN looks like an innocent abroad – but I am not sure what will be accepted as progress?

DD isn’t going to shoot himself to keep the fan base happy.

  17. 1- 11 all fit, we are by far the best in the country.

Long term injuries to starting players have shown the replacements are not only not good enough, some of them they are not even SPL standard.

Im convinced Ralston wouldnt be a starter anywhere else. Scales would struggle.McCowan and kenny look like what they are. However Donovan, arguably worse than Ralston, Dane Murray looks well out his depth

    Its the perfect storm.

Our only hope is 3 or 4 high quality loan deals in January from players we can’t afford but re not getting a game elsewhere. Players who can come in and start games

Win the league at all costs, forget everything else.

Then a massive reset in the close season

  21. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

The decision whether or not to offer Rodgers a contract extension should have been made long before the summer. It wasn’t and the summer window descended in to a collective farce.

Once the penny finally dropped that Rodgers was at it they made an inspired decision to reappoint MoN. Whilst performances were hardly inspiring, he steadied the ship, instilled some badly needed confidence and was getting results. Off the pitch you were also beginning to sense the mob was being marginalised.

What happened next would be crucial. Letting MoN go and appointing anyone was always going to be fraught with risk, but it was a decision they simply had to get right. The choice of Wilfried Nancy was always going to yield a binary outcome: it would either be inspired or a roaring disaster.

Unfortunately on the evidence so far it appears to be the latter and they’ve completely screwed up something they simply could not afford to get wrong.

Nothing but sympathy for Wilfried Nancy

    —————

    serious question time.

imho analtics and data apply as much to the managers stats as they do to individual players.

by what metric then was wilfie ranked as the executives first pick ?

our only hope is the other teams are just as inconsistent, the league winner are on target for the lowest points and goals scored in a 3 for a win league season.

  24. The downward spiral will accelerate.

We must get MON back now. We need to steady the ship before the transfer window or we are done — 3rd at best.

This will get very ugly very soon with the Board / Execs fully responsible. Nicholson is afraid of his own shadow and needs to go immediately..

Hope DD sees sense and rescues WN.
