Lawwell: Barton “would prefer to come to Celtic”

120

It’s unusual for Celtic to comment on transfer speculation, but this statement clarifies a few issues.  Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, today denied claims the club wanted to sign Joey Barton, instead insisting the player “would really prefer to come to Celtic” than sign for “his new club”.

Lawwell said:

“I think Joey’s been had by a bit of a matchmaker here”.

“I remember it well, we had just announced Brendan as our new Manager and I was with our Company Secretary in London at the time.   An agent called me saying that Joey was going to sign for Rangers but he would really prefer to come to Celtic and were we interested in signing him, but it wasn’t something we wanted to pursue”.

“These things happen to players sometimes in football, but needless to say we wish Joey well at his new Club”.

I hope that the “new club” and Joey sort out their differences.  They appear to be so well matched.

  1. If Barton is sacked or released from his contract, will he be able to play immediately elsewhere for another club or will he have to wait until the next transfer window as a free agent?

  4. Joey Barton betting for entertainment? What happened to the high brow Joey who entertained himself reading books by French existentialist authors?

Surely he should have been too busy reading Camus instead of betting? Afterall he should have been trying to familiarise himself with “The Plague” before “The Fall”?

“Wee Bertie also talked about Jimmy turning Davie Provan of Rangers inside out and added “But you know what? Big Provan never once tried to kick him – not that he could get a hold of him to kick mind you – But he didn’t try. There was just respect there, and in return there was no rubbing the noses in it, no antagonism, no nastiness.”

    Interesting.

I remember attending a game at Celtic Park where Rangers defenders took it in turns to kick the merde out of wee Jimmy.

On one occasion wee Jimmy ended up on the red blaise in front of the Main Stand.

Ian Archer described it as a rota system.

That way no-one would be sent off.

May have been the 3-1 game where Johansen took the penalty which hit the bar , and in which Celtic scored 3 goals in the last 10 minutes.

I also remember Davie Provan returning to his left back berth after Rangers had scored at Ibrox and giving the double handed vicky to the Celtic support.

Lets have no sanitised version of the conduct of some of the hun players.

  10. Professional football players can only be fined 2 weeks wages; so at least 2 of his 4 weeks leave will be paid. I was going to say £40K for doing nothing, but he’s been doing nothing since July!

As far as sacking him goes, I doubt that the gambling is a sackable offence; they have also set precedent by not sacking Black or Smonsen for football betting so he will be safe on that one.

They are going to need to find something much bigger than he already has been “found guilty” of to get him out the door for nothing.

He was a degenerate gambler. That is, a man who gambled simply to gamble and must lose. As a hero who goes to war must die. Show me a gambler and I’ll show you a loser, show me a hero and I’ll show you a corpse.

If I remember correctly, it wasn’t so much of a tackle; more like wee 10:30 doing him. If I recall, Provan was thundering in and Bertie put his foot and all his weight on the ball and as Provan connected, he got Bertie’s foot into his ankle.

I’ve heard the stories too, met a few of the characters involved, and yes, it can get a bit repetitive reading the various arms length accounts, but for some it’s new and it’s interesting and it would be churlish to deny them that enjoyment.

Just catching up on accounts and sloey’s new club

I was just wondering how those accounts could have looked had we had champions league football last season – mind would have meant paying more for an experienced manager

    And

Sloey, wonder if an agent telling the new club they were also talking to Celtic, would have put any more money into the package being offered ? Which new club cannot afford, hence we are witnessing what we are

Incidentally how much would constructive disnissal cost new club ? :-)))))

Usual response would be along the lines of, we have no comment to make or we have never shown an interest in the player, not specifics.

  22. I cant see how Joey can be sacked for Betting.A precedent was set for this by The Rangers when they did not sack their last player found guilty of this.In fact his crime was worse as he actually bet on a game he was involved in.Joey betting on a Barca-Celtic game, being used as a reason to sack him wont hold water.

    Pleased he has done so.

Now if Barton wants to sue for defamation, I’m sure he will.

  25. Why is he commenting at all on that prk? What about the new club Peter? A totally pointless statement, on someone who is of no concern to us.

  27. Johansen hit the bar with the penalty ———— he then tried to score with a header — that prevented Penman from putting the ball in the net . Genius . !!! The Deady Bears were 1 up ( from an offside goal ) . Celtic scored 3 in the last 10 or so minutes.
